Four people entered the hospital room.
“Xiao Qing, the police would like to ask you about what happened that night. Do you remember anything?” Yan Qin said softly.
“Xiao Qing, don’t worry, I’m here,” Wei Jun said as he approached the bedside, gently placing his hand on the girl’s shoulder. The softness on his face was a stark contrast to his usual demeanor when flirting with the nurses.
Xiao Qing, who had been resting half-reclined on the bed, suddenly lifted her face.
The white gauze covering her eyes had not yet been removed, and all that could be seen was her terrified expression as she trembled and whispered, “Who? Who else?”
As everyone was taken aback by her panic, she suddenly grasped Wei Jun’s hand tightly. “He’s here! He’s here! I know… he’s here!”
The girl curled up in Wei Jun’s embrace, covering her face with her hands as she groped for her lifeless eyes, letting out a heart-wrenching wail like a young beast.
“She said… the one who blinded her is you…”
“Impossible…” Roth exclaimed, unable to maintain his composure. “I don’t even know her!”
“But after you went in, you didn’t say a word. How would she know of your presence?”
“Maybe she heard the footsteps of a stranger and felt scared…”
Yan Qin scrutinized Roth for a moment before shaking his head. “Let’s hear what she has to say for herself.” With that, Yan Qin left the empty doctor’s duty room. Outside, the Female Intern was laughing maliciously.
“The new Deputy Team Leader has become a Suspect right away; now you don’t have to worry about anyone competing with you for the captain position.”
This time, Yan Qin was not in a joking mood.
“How reliable do you think Xiao Qing’s accusation is?”
"I don't know. Wei Jun is watching her inside, waiting to see what she will tell him," she said.
Yan Qin found it strange. "At first, you were the one taking care of her. How did she suddenly become dependent on Wei Jun?"
The girl's smile was peculiar. "Can people's feelings really be measured by time?"
"That's him!" the girl murmured.
"But he's a police officer..."
"It's him... I can smell his scent..." The girl trembled. "That night, I was walking alone when suddenly someone placed a hand on my shoulder. When I turned around..."
"What did you see?"
"I saw nothing... Just felt a sharp pain in my eyes, and then I lost consciousness..."
"...You didn't see who the attacker was?"
"...No... I only knew he was a tall man, so all I could see was his shoulder... He was wearing... It was late, and I couldn't see clearly, but it seemed to be a Deep Blue shirt... though it might not have been..." The girl lowered her head, a hint of a cold smile appearing at the corner of her mouth. "That was the last thing I saw..."
"What happened next?"
"I don't know how long I was unconscious before I woke up in pain... I didn't know where I was or could see anything... At first, I thought it was just dark outside... Then I heard someone running towards me... I thought it was him and screamed in fear... That person grabbed me, but I knew it wasn't him anymore... It was someone else... Then I fainted again... When I woke up, I was in the hospital..."
Wei Jun recounted everything to Yan Qin, who fell into deep thought.
"Xiao Qing's height really only reaches Roth's shoulder... Another coincidence?" Female Intern remarked coolly from the side.
While Wei Jun had been speaking and peering outside, he could no longer hold back and finally asked, "Where did that Deputy Captain Luo go?"
"I had him return to the team first," Yan Qin finally spoke up. "This situation is special; we can't let him participate in the investigation any longer."
"Do you suspect him?" Xin Zi asked.
The Criminal Police Captain stared at her. "Why is there not a single 'also' in your statement?"
The girl waved her hand dismissively. "I wouldn't dare to casually suspect a police officer, lest I end up in trouble myself."
"I've always wondered why Xiao Qing was alone in such a place and why she didn't call for help immediately after the tragedy occurred. She was found in Deep Alley, yet no one saw anyone running out beforehand. Now it becomes clear; she must have been injured and unconscious, then moved by the Suspect and left in Deep Alley. Did he not want her to be discovered by passersby? But carrying a bloodied girl, wouldn't he fear being noticed?"
Xin Zi scoffed. "You've been waiting for her to recount what happened, and now that she identifies the Suspect as a police officer, you immediately doubt her."
Yan Qin felt embarrassed. "I just want to clarify every detail."
"The Suspect's motive could be one of two things: first, a perverse act of violence, where Xiao Qing was randomly chosen because she is a fragile girl. Second, intentional harm; the Suspect's target was Xiao Qing for some reason. He didn't want her dead but rather wished to keep her from seeing the light again.
Why? Is it to make her suffer? Or is there something he doesn't want her to confirm with her own eyes? If it was intentional harm, there must be some connection between the Suspect and Xiao Qing. In that fleeting moment when she turned around, she didn't recognize him but could identify him by his presence after going blind, indicating she truly didn't know him before but remembered some characteristic in that instant of injury.
That characteristic might just match Roth as well. However, since she has identified him now, why doesn't the police confirm Roth's alibi? Wouldn't that clarify everything?"
The Criminal Police Captain found himself at a loss against the girl's sharp tongue. He shook his head with a wry smile. "You're right. I don't believe that man is Roth either, but confirming his alibi is indeed necessary."
