Shu Huan mustered all her strength and pushed open the iron door of the restroom.
A sturdy figure in white, with white hair, came into view.
Gathering her courage, she took a step forward.
Suddenly, the figure in white turned around.
Shu Huan screamed in fright—she saw the person wearing a terrifying mask—a grotesque white face with fearsome fangs. This was clearly the "Demon God" spoken of in village legends.
The "Demon God" slightly tilted to the side, and Shu Huan was stunned by the sight before her—Sister Liu was bound to a chair, her desperate eyes helplessly staring at Shu Huan.
At that moment, a gleaming dagger slid out from the long sleeve of the "Demon God."
Shu Huan was already frozen in fear; she watched in horror as the "Demon God" plunged the dagger into Sister Liu's heart.
Sister Liu's white shirt was instantly stained red with blood, yet she continued to glare at Shu Huan, as if blaming her for not coming to help. With a loud crash, she fell to the ground, the dagger still embedded in her chest, blood dripping onto the floor.
Shu Huan's mind was blank; she screamed and called for help, but nothing could stop the "Demon God" from advancing toward her step by step.
Just as Shu Huan collapsed to the ground in extreme terror, the "Demon God" stood before her, another dagger sliding out from the other sleeve.
It’s over! Shu Huan thought, choosing to close her eyes and calmly await that moment of pain. Something cloth-like—perhaps a handkerchief—was pressed over her mouth, and she caught a whiff of a strong anesthetic.
Her consciousness began to fade, and the "Demon God" before her grew increasingly blurry.
Finally, Shu Huan fell down.
Shu Huan nestled in Lu Wan's embrace, and after sharing her memories, Lin Mu Feng furrowed his brow thoughtfully. "Teacher Shu, there's something I find quite strange."
"Why am I still alive?" Shu Huan gazed directly at Lin Mu Feng.
Lin Mu Feng glanced at Lu Wan and nodded. "That's right. If I were the murderer, I would definitely have killed you."
Lu Wan was about to retort when Lin Mu Feng added, "Because I would have had a reason to kill you."
"Oh? I don't see any reason for that," Lu Wan said sternly. "Xiao Huan witnessed the entire process of the murder, but the killer was always wearing the 'Demon God' mask. This means she never saw the killer's true face."
"I actually think Teacher Shu knows who the murderer is," Lin Mu Feng said, patting Lu Wan on the back. "Because in her earlier narrative, I heard the term 'silhouette.' Moreover, when she mentioned those two words, she had that expression of wanting to say something but holding back."
Shu Huan smiled at Lu Wan as if to say, "You lost this round."
"Teacher Shu, if you… um… have already suspected someone in the village based on that silhouette, feel free to speak up."
Lin Mu Feng carefully chose his words. "Just like I said earlier, I will firmly believe—regardless of whom you think that silhouette belongs to."
"Liu Erhan." Shu Huan almost blurted it out, seemingly confident in her answer.
"I see." Lin Mu Feng leaned slightly forward. "Sorry for the interruption."
He turned to leave but paused after a few steps. "Hey, are you going to continue your sweet nothings with your girlfriend or come with me?"
"I'm not 'hey'." Lu Wan strode past Lin Mu Feng and out the door.
"I have to admit, this case is indeed very strange. So much so that as an atheist, I once thought that the whole thing might not have been caused by humans at all."
Lu Wan sat on a rock, basking in the cool mountain breeze. "When all the clues lay before me, I could only conclude that it was the work of ghosts or deities."
"This is the result of the entire afternoon's investigation." Lu Wan tossed a notebook onto the table.
Lin Mu Feng, seated at the table, picked up the notebook and glanced sideways at Lu Wan. "Not going well?"
"No," Lu Wan replied angrily. "It's going too well—too well to prove that Liu Erhan had no time to commit the crime!"
"Mm." Lin Mu Feng responded quietly, handing Lu Wan a piece of paper. "Take a look at this."
Lu Wan took the paper and began to read aloud—
"1. At around this time, Shu Huan started taking a shower. About a minute later, she heard a woman's scream coming from outside the bathroom door.
2. At around this time, Shu Huan opened the iron door of the bathroom and stepped out. She then witnessed the 'Demon God' committing murder.
3. At around this time, Shu Huan was knocked unconscious by the 'Demon God.'
4. At around this time, Lin Mu Feng, Lu Wan, and the village chief arrived at the crime scene—Shu Huan's room. Lin Mu Feng confirmed Sister Liu's death."
