"These are the most straightforward clues," Lin Mu Feng said as he read through the notebook. "If we consider the entire process as a puzzle, then we are only missing one piece."
"Which is: during this time," Lu Wan mused, stroking the bridge of his nose.
"Exactly." Lin Mu Feng held a pen in his hand and gestured in the air. "Think about the scene when we arrived. First of all, Teacher Shu's room was a locked chamber—before you recklessly smashed the window, I had checked. The window, needless to say, was locked from the inside.
The door latch was also secured; it was an old-fashioned latch that, once locked from the inside, made it impossible for anyone outside to enter, let alone secure it from outside. Therefore, when you were frantically banging on the glass, the entire room was indeed a locked chamber."
Lu Wan fell silent, indicating his agreement.
"Thus, the first question becomes obvious—how did the murderer leave the locked room?"
As Lin Mu Feng spoke, he stood up from his chair and began pacing around the room. "What else did we see? We saw a woman lying in a pool of blood—Sister Liu—and Teacher Shu hanging on the wall like a crucifix. This raises a second question—why didn't the murderer kill Teacher Shu to eliminate future witnesses?"
Lu Wan replied, "Perhaps it was to leave a survivor to confirm that it was indeed the 'Demon God' who committed the murders." He watched as Lin Mu Feng wrote these two questions on the wall.
"Since the murderer disguised himself as the legendary 'Demon God' to commit murder, even Teacher Shu, as a witness, wouldn't be able to see the true face hidden behind the mask. However, Teacher Shu recognized his silhouette—she pointed out that the murderer was likely Liu Erhan. I believe she was confident in this assertion—and I think her confidence is well-founded—because most of the men in the village are thin and frail, while Liu Erhan is exceptionally tall and strong; he stands out quite obviously."
Lin Mu Feng returned to the table and picked up Lu Wan's notebook. "I believe that what Teacher Shu saw as the 'Demon God' was indeed Liu Erhan in disguise. But according to your investigation results..."
"That's where I'm puzzled too—Liu Erhan's alibi is flawless."
Lu Wan took over and said, "He was drinking at Old Wu's house with a group of farmers from eight o'clock until ten that night. During those two hours, at least one person can vouch for his whereabouts, including Aunt Wu, who didn't touch a drop of alcohol."
"The implication is that he didn't have the time to commit the crime," Lin Mu Feng said, touching the earring in his left ear and frowning slightly. "The third question is—who played the 'Demon God'?"
"I have a few points to raise as well," Lu Wan said, raising a finger and adopting a serious tone. "First, why choose to kill in Shu Huan's room? Shu Huan's room is located halfway up the mountain, nearly a ten-minute trek from the village below. Sister Liu was specifically hired to take care of Shu Huan; she leaves his room every night. So, the murderer could easily ambush Sister Liu on her way back. Was there really a need to commit murder knowing there would be witnesses?"
"Secondly, why did the murderer engage in strange activities after the killing instead of fleeing immediately? I can't believe someone like Liu Erhan, who is impulsive, reckless, and uneducated, would have the patience to create a crime scene resembling a ritual. I also don't believe he has the intelligence or capability to set up a locked room."
After listening, Lin Mu Feng nodded and said, "I know the answers to these two questions."
Lu Wan looked at him in surprise.
"Sit tight," Lin Mu Feng said, patting the chair and signaling Lu Wan to take a seat. "Let me tell you a story—the story of Mianjiang Village."
