I returned to the precinct and received a Dismemberment Case that required an autopsy.
You should know that I encounter dead bodies countless times a day, but I haven't dealt with many dismemberment cases, so I was quite excited that day. Don't think I'm a weirdo; it's mainly because I have a passion for my work.
The purpose of dismemberment is to confuse the police's judgment, making it difficult for us to determine the time of death and the identity of the deceased. The body, or rather, those Corpse Fragments, were what I examined.
I extracted DNA from the deceased's blood, and next, we needed to wait for matches from Missing Persons that corresponded to the age and identity of the deceased, calling their families in for identification.
Since the Corpse Fragments were cut into relatively large pieces, the gender characteristics were still quite apparent. However, some parts of the body were missing, such as the head and internal organs, which we could no longer find.
Given that the site where the Corpse Fragments were discovered was in the outskirts, we did not rule out the possibility that they had been taken away by wild dogs.
A day later, a man who came to identify the body caught my attention. Upon closer inspection, it was none other than Zhang Zhiwen! He was also a classmate from high school. He had been dating Chen Wenting since then, and calculating it out, it had been seven or eight years—quite a deep relationship.
I approached him to ask about his situation. He was very excited to see me and couldn't believe I was now working as a forensic expert. He told me that his wife, Chen Wenting, had been missing for several days, and he was very anxious, fearing something had happened to her. He came to report her missing at the police station and was asked to identify a Nameless Female Corpse.
"Don't worry," I said. "I saw your wife yesterday, just over by my place. The Corpse Fragment inside is definitely not Chen Wenting!" I felt somewhat confident saying this. Based on my years of experience in forensic examination, it was clear that those Corpse Fragments had been refrigerated by someone to delay decomposition. This made it very difficult for us to determine the exact time of death; however, one thing was certain—it definitely wasn't someone who died yesterday."
Zhang Zhiwen seemed somewhat reassured after hearing my words. But according to protocol, we still needed to compare the DNA from the body with that of Chen Wenting.
While we waited for that process, I chatted with Zhang Zhiwen about various things. He was currently working as a sales manager at a computer company and seemed to be doing well financially.
Since he worked in sales, socializing was common; this often led Chen Wenting to suspect he might be having an affair. When I asked Zhang Zhiwen if he had been unfaithful, he appeared troubled—his expression had already answered my question.
"Well, it's normal for a man to act this way... there's really no need to run away from home!" Zhang Zhiwen seemed to believe he hadn't done anything wrong. I told him that he had indeed hurt Chen Wenting's feelings, and if I were Chen Wenting, I would definitely divorce him.
Not long after, the DNA comparison report came out. I couldn't believe my eyes; the results matched perfectly.
This meant that the Corpse Fragment lying in my autopsy room was indeed Chen Wenting's!
Zhang Zhiwen was beside me, crying uncontrollably, but I felt that things weren't as simple as they seemed. I immediately went to find Tian Xu and asked him to help me investigate the exact time the body was discovered. It turned out that this investigation only made the case more unbelievable.
According to the recollections of the scavenger who found the Corpse Fragment, the body was discovered around ten o'clock, after which they immediately called the police. Tian Xu also had a record showing that he arrived at the scene at 10:10.
Here’s the problem: when I encountered Chen Wenting at the Hong Ruixing restaurant, it was around 9:45 in the morning. I clearly remember glancing at the clock above the cashier's head when I was paying. Not long after sitting down, I saw Chen Wenting walk past me.
This means that at 9:45, Chen Wenting was still alive, yet by ten o'clock, she had already been dismembered. The strangest part is that the location where the body was found was in Baoshan District on Bao'an Highway, which is 50 kilometers away from Yangpu District on Dunhua Road. Whether by subway or car, it would take at least an hour to get there.
How could Chen Wenting have been dismembered in a place 50 kilometers away within just 15 minutes?
This is absolutely absurd!
