Xiao Yao turned her head to look at the woman beside her. Although she was middle-aged, she couldn't really be considered so, as she seemed to be only in her thirties and was very well-maintained.
However, there was a certain steadiness in her eyes. At that moment, Xiao Yao suddenly thought of Su Hong's composure and decisiveness, which she must have learned from her mother; like mother, like daughter.
Xiao Yao suddenly broke into a smile. "Well, since the prince wants to pamper me, I will enjoy his affection. If he needs me to face difficulties with him, I believe I can step up."
Lady Su looked at this child—let's call her a child—who appeared to be younger than her own daughter, but...
"The princess is indeed very perceptive," Lady Su said earnestly.
Xiao Yao smiled and graciously accepted the compliment.
As they chatted casually, they arrived at Su Hong's courtyard. It was a small courtyard with a bamboo forest behind it, two apricot trees in the front yard, and a few flowering plants. There were also some tables and chairs arranged simply. However, Xiao Yao could tell at a glance that the house in the courtyard had been thoughtfully designed. In the north, most houses are not built with multiple stories, but Su Hong's boudoir was an exquisite two-story building with three sections on each floor.
It was clear that the Su Mansion had truly invested effort in cultivating Su Hong's demeanor. Following Lady Su, Xiao Yao went up to the second floor and walked to the innermost room where Su Hong was applying makeup. Upon seeing Xiao Yao, her face lit up with surprise as she immediately came forward and took Xiao Yao's hand. "Sister, what brings you here?"
"The prince has gone to the palace to help out, and since I have nothing else to do here, I thought I'd come by and see if everything is ready," Xiao Yao peeked at the Matchmaker standing behind.
"Yes, it's almost done," Su Hong replied with a smile. They were just waiting for the auspicious time to leave.
"That's good," Xiao Yao said, feeling relieved. Then she winked playfully. "So, are you nervous?"
Su Hong blushed and glanced at her mother standing nearby before nodding vigorously. "I am really quite nervous."
"That's okay," Xiao Yao chuckled. "When I married the prince, I was also extremely nervous before the wedding. But once it started, everything was fine."
"Really?" Su Hong widened her eyes; naturally, Xiao Yao had more experience regarding marriage than she did.
"Yes," Xiao Yao nodded but then thought for a moment before adding, "But you're a Consort, so... actually, I'm not sure."
"You..." Su Hong shot a glare at Xiao Yao.
Seeing this, Lady Su stepped in with a smile to ease the tension. "Alright, alright. The princess is just concerned about you; there's nothing to worry about. Haven't you practiced many times before? You didn't make any mistakes then. You'll be fine this time; just relax."
Now it was Xiao Yao's turn to be surprised. "You practiced?"
"Ah." Su Hong nodded naturally, "The rules of the palace are complicated. With the Crown Prince's Wedding, the rules are even more complex. If you don't practice a few times, how would you know the rules? What if you make a fool of yourself later?" At this point, Su Hong looked at Xiao Yao curiously, "Don't you have to?"
Xiao Yao shook her head honestly, "No, when I married the prince, it wasn't this complicated. I mentioned it to the prince; he didn't need to follow any of that. Besides, when we got married, neither of our parents were present, so we just did whatever was simple."
Hearing this, Lady Su felt a bit emotional for some reason, but thinking about this joyous occasion, even if she wanted to cry, it wasn't the right time. She smiled and said, "That's because the prince cares for you, so he didn't make you learn."
"Yes," Su Hong immediately responded upon hearing Lady Su's words, "The prince is considerate; learning the rules is tiring. Anyway, it's all up to him in the royal residence, so it doesn't matter."
"Hehe, that's true." Xiao Yao also smiled and nodded in agreement.
At this moment, Su Hong was wearing a long red Wedding Dress that trailed on the ground. The necklace on her chest represented Consort status, and a row of decorative buttons extending from her neck was designed by Xiao Yao. They were all fixed by hand and sewn with fabric of the same color to keep their shape. The final arrangement of the buttons formed a delicate phoenix ready to take flight, which not only highlighted Su Hong's long neck but also added a touch of charm to the entire outfit.
Xiao Yao had put a lot of thought into designing these buttons; she had spent at least a month on them.
Originally, she only intended to make such buttons for her own dress as a fun project. Little did she know that after Su Hong saw them, she requested Xiao Yao to add something similar to her Wedding Dress.
Xiao Yao couldn't refuse and agreed to make one since it was for the Consort's Wedding Dress; she didn't dare make any significant changes. Only then did Su Hong leave satisfied.
What started as a nervous project ended up looking quite good; Su Hong was very pleased with it.
Lady Su looked at the decorative buttons on Su Hong's Wedding Dress with wide eyes in amazement. "These buttons are quite unique and can embellish the dress beautifully; they truly add the finishing touch! How did you come up with this idea?"
Su Hong smiled slightly and said, "This wasn't my idea."
"Then whose is it? The embroiderers from the Internal Affairs Office?" Lady Su looked closely and shook her head. "Impossible! If the Internal Affairs Office could come up with something like this, they would have presented it to the palace ladies long ago; I've never seen anything like this in court."
Xiao Yao and Su Hong exchanged glances over Lady Su's head and smiled at each other. Su Hong continued, "Of course it's not from the Internal Affairs Office; it's from your daughter-in-law here, Consort Xuanping."
"Ah?" Lady Su looked at Xiao Yao in surprise and then immediately smiled and said, "I didn't expect that the princess has researched this."
"Madam overpraises me," Xiao Yao lowered her head shyly. "It's just something I did out of boredom in the residence to pass the time; it's not worthy of much attention."
Lady Su wanted to say more when they heard a eunuch outside calling out, "The auspicious time has arrived! Please have Consort get into the sedan!"
Everyone immediately got busy again for Su Hong, covering her with a large red veil. With the Matchmaker supporting her, she slowly walked down the stairs to the entrance. The Matchmaker lifted Su Hong's veil, and Su Hong, tears streaming down her face, looked at Lady Su and said, "Mother, I am about to marry into the palace. Although we are still in the capital, it feels so different..."
"Mother knows, Mother knows..." At this moment, Lady Su couldn't help but start crying as well.
Once you enter the palace, it is as deep as the sea. Even though we are in the same capital city, there is a wall with Glazed Tiles that separates us; it is two different worlds. Xiao Yao sighed softly and stood quietly by the side without saying a word.
Lady Su was still chattering away, giving instructions to Su Hong, who nodded repeatedly in agreement. The mother and daughter were reluctant to part.
However, separation was inevitable.
Watching Su Hong reluctantly walk towards the large red Sedan Chair step by step, Xiao Yao let out a long sigh and entered the Sedan Chair, saying, "Let's go, into the palace." (To be continued)
