"I want to do what?" He Ziyi looked at his parents with a serious expression.
He Yu paused for a moment before saying, "Read books."
"Read books?" He Ziyi tilted his head in confusion. "Like my younger brother?"
"Yes, just like your younger brother."
"Is that really useful?" He Ziyi still didn't understand.
He Yu revealed a mysterious smile and patted He Ziyi's head. "Whether it's useful or not, you'll have to see for yourself." Xiao Yao nodded in agreement. "That's right, you need to experience it yourself to know if it's useful."
"We're heading out temporarily, so I don't have much else. Take this book and read it for now." He Yu took out a book and placed it in He Ziyi's hands. Xiao Yao curiously leaned over to take a look at the book. It was somewhat old, and the pages were thicker compared to the spine. However, it was clear that it had been well preserved. "Is this Military Strategy?"
"Yes," He Yu nodded. "This is the Military Strategy left by my father; let him take a look at this first."
Xiao Yao took the Military Strategy from their son's hands and opened it. In addition to the original content, there were dense annotations throughout. Xiao Yao flipped through it carefully and noticed that the first half of the book had three different types of notes, while the latter half had two different types of notes. Xiao Yao instantly understood and looked at He Yu, pointing at the book. "You haven't finished reading this book yet, have you?"
"Right," He Yu nodded. "But this is also my third time reading it; it's okay if I haven't finished."
"Third time?!" Xiao Yao was surprised. "Do you use different notes each time?"
Seeing Xiao Yao's astonished expression, He Yu chuckled. "Of course not; these different notes are from my grandfather and father. My records from the previous two times aren't here; I copied them down separately."
Xiao Yao widened her eyes as she looked at He Yu, her expression complex.
"What’s wrong?" He Yu smiled.
As soon as the words fell, Xiao Yao reached out and hugged He Yu, remaining silent.
He Yu held the suddenly embraced Xiao Yao, only letting out a soft chuckle as he ruffled her hair, without saying anything.
Meanwhile, He Ziyi watched his parents suddenly hugging each other, momentarily stunned. He opened his mouth to say something but ultimately didn't.
The three of them fell into silence. He Yu and Xiao Yao released each other, and Xiao Yao turned to glance out the window. "It's getting late. Why hasn't Second Brother come back? Could it be that he's really captivated by that Princess?"
Upon hearing Xiao Yao's words, He Yu couldn't help but smile widely. Xiao Yao turned back to He Yu and said with a laugh, "You know, just a couple of days ago I was joking with Consort about our Second Brother becoming a prince consort for their family. It was just a joke, but now it seems like it might actually come true."
"That's perfect; both kids will be settled in the future," He Yu said with satisfaction.
Just then, they heard Yun Zhu enter and report, "Your Highness, Your Highness, Second Young Master has returned."
The two exchanged smiles, just as he came back.
He Zi'an walked into the inner room but quickly retreated cautiously upon entering. The strange atmosphere in the room made him feel like he was a piece of meat waiting to be slaughtered. However, those inside were his parents and elder brother; could it really be that he was the one in trouble?
He Zi'an poked his head into the inner room like a mouse, cautiously looking at He Yu and Xiao Yao.
To his surprise, his parents were looking at him with calm expressions, smiling without saying a word, their faces inscrutable.
"Hehe, Dad, Mom," He Zi'an grinned at his parents.
"Welcome back," Xiao Yao said with a warm smile, waving her hand. "Why are you hiding over there? Come sit down."
He Zi'an scratched his head, feeling that it might not be that dangerous after all. Could it be that he was overthinking? Facing his mother's warm smile, He Zi'an felt a bit more at ease and walked into the inner room as usual. He even took the book from He Ziyi's hands to flip through it, while He Yu and Xiao Yao whispered to each other, "Looks like he's nervous."
"Yeah..." Xiao Yao nodded.
However, the couple didn't really plan to take any action; after all, it was a matter of children's affection, and they had several years to grow up. Who knew what the future would hold?
The couple exchanged glances, deciding not to pursue the matter for now.
Yun Zhu walked in and asked, "Your Highness, Your Highness, shall we serve the meal?"
"Yes, serve the meal," Xiao Yao nodded.
Yun Zhu complied and went out to serve the meal.
Meanwhile, He Zi'an started chatting with He Ziyi. "Military Strategy?"
"Yes, it's from Father. He wants me to study it carefully."
"Oh, why are there several different handwriting styles on it?"
"Just now it was Father’s; that’s Father’s handwriting. There’s also Grandfather's and Great-Grandfather's handwriting. This is especially precious from Mother!" He Ziyi was completely open with his brother.
"Oh." Hearing this made He Zi'an's heart stir. He lowered his head to flip through the book from start to finish and then returned it to He Ziyi. "It's great to have insights from Father, Grandfather, and Great-Grandfather. How wonderful!"
Having just heard his mother praised and now hearing his brother praised as well, He Ziyi naturally assumed it must be a good thing, breaking into a proud silly smile. He Zi'an looked at He Ziyi's foolish expression and pouted, "Idiot!"
The couple across the way was at a loss for words.
Since that day of education, He Ziyi began to read Military Strategy. Xiao Yao had some doubts about He Ziyi's focus, but unexpectedly, the child was actually in the study with He Zi'an, reading for half the day, shifting around in his seat.
Xiao Yao walked into the study holding two bowls of mung bean soup and said with a smile, "Alright, stop studying so hard. Come and drink some mung bean soup to cool off."
Hearing this, the two children happily put down their books. Xiao Yao set down the mung bean soup and asked He Ziyi, "Is the book interesting?"
"Very interesting!" When it came to Military Strategy, He Ziyi immediately became excited. "Those tactics of winning with fewer troops are amazing!"
"You understood it all?!" Xiao Yao was surprised. A five-year-old could understand Military Strategy? Xiao Yao found it hard to believe.
He Ziyi scratched his head and said shyly, "Actually, I don't really understand everything, but those stories are just too impressive! I want to be a general like that in the future!" Seeing her son so excited, Xiao Yao curiously picked up the book and flipped through it carefully, only to realize that it mainly discussed various stories of winning with fewer troops. It wasn't really difficult or obscure military strategies; it felt more like tales.
Upon closer inspection, Xiao Yao finally understood He Yu's intention and why He Yu had read it so many times.
Those interesting stories might resonate differently depending on one's life experiences at various stages.
