On the hazy night, the sky of Taipei is shrouded in dark clouds, as if foreshadowing an extraordinary change.
The city's neon lights flicker chaotically, as if competing to be more dazzling.
However, in the simple yet tastefully designed bedroom of Chen Yifan (Evan) and Lin Meichi (Michelle)'s home, everything seemed to be as usual.
The tranquility was interrupted by the ringing of a cell phone. Michelle reached for the phone on the bedside table and saw that it was her mother calling, immediately filling her with a sense of foreboding. She answered the call, and her mother's urgent and panicked voice seemed to come through the phone screen.
" Meichi, your dad had an accident, and he's in the hospital now. The doctor said he needs to have emergency surgery, and we need a family member's signature. Hurry over here!"
Michelle's mind was in chaos, feeling as if the phone in her hand had turned into a heavy boulder. After she hung up, she felt a heavy weight pressing on her chest.
"What's wrong? What happened?" Evan immediately woke up from his sleep, his voice carrying a hint of fatigue but more of concern.
"My dad had an accident and needs emergency surgery. I need to get to the hospital."
Evan quickly sat up from the bed, "I'll drive you."
Michelle shook her head, "No need, I'll drive myself."
Evan interrupted Michelle and said firmly, "No, your emotions are too unstable right now. I'll drive you to a safer place. Put on some clothes, I'll go start the car."
Michelle didn't say much, quickly changed into clothes, put on a coat and shoes, and then followed Evan out the door.
The car quickly shuttled through the narrow streets of Taipei and finally arrived at a large comprehensive hospital in the city center.
The two quickly arrived at the hospital and as soon as they entered the emergency room lobby, they could feel the tense and uneasy atmosphere.
The hospital's emergency department is always busy and chaotic, with overwhelmed nurses and hurried doctors shuttling between the beds and operating rooms.
A child is crying, and several family members are anxiously waiting for news.
Michelle saw her mother standing in the corner of the emergency room lobby, pale and obviously unable to contain her anxiety.
When Michelle and Evan arrived, she hugged Michelle tightly and said with a trembling voice, "Mom has already signed."
"Mom, what's wrong? What happened to Dad?" Michelle's voice trembled.
"His heart has a problem and needs immediate surgery. Hurry over to see your father," Mom said, tears welling up in her eyes.
Michelle felt dizzy for a moment, but she forcefully suppressed her emotions and quickly followed the nurse to the doctor's office.
At the doorway, she glanced back at Evan, who stood not far away, looking at her with determination. In that moment, Michelle suddenly understood that whether or not to get married, the important thing is to find someone who will support you in difficult times.
After seeing her father and briefly speaking with the doctor, Michelle returned to the lobby.
Evan walked over and tightly embraced her.
"Are you okay?" "I don't know," Michelle's voice carried a hint of helplessness, "I just know that I suddenly have doubts about something I've always been against. Have we been going the wrong way?"
Evan looked into Michelle's eyes and said seriously, "Love is not a matter of right or wrong, but whether you are willing to walk with me, no matter how difficult the path may be."
Michelle gazed at Evan, feeling a slight relief from the pressure and doubt in her heart.
She suddenly realized that, even in such difficult circumstances, having someone willing to be by her side was the most important thing.
"Thank you, Evan. No matter what the future holds, at least for now, I know I'm not alone."
Evan gently kissed Michelle's forehead, "No need to thank me, because I know that if it were me, you would do the same."
At this moment, the nurse walked over, "Miss Lin, your father has been taken to the operating room. The surgery will probably take about three hours."
Michelle took a deep breath, feeling as if she had sucked the whole world into her lungs, and then exhaled slowly.
The light from the operating room leaked through the glass door, shimmering like a distant planet, and she stood on this side of the door, full of helplessness and waiting.
"Thank you, nurse." Michelle said with a smile to the nurse.
The nurse nodded, with a professional and compassionate smile on her face, then turned and left to attend to other matters.
"I'll go buy coffee and food for you. You stay with your mom. Later, I'll help you ask for leave from the company," Evan said in a gentle tone.
"Okay, you go. Take care," Michelle said, reminding him carefully.
The operating room door was tightly closed, separating Michelle and her father's fates.
Michelle's gaze involuntarily turned to her mother, fatigue and concern evident in her eyes.
"Mom, where is that other woman?" Michelle slowly walked over to her mother and asked.
"When I arrived, I didn't see her," a hint of barely noticeable disappointment and worry flashed in the mother's eyes.
The two of them chatted aimlessly, not knowing how much time had passed.
Mother's gaze suddenly focused on Evan at the other end of the hallway.
Evan stood there elegantly, holding two cups of coffee and two lunch boxes in his hands, glancing at the door of the operating room from time to time.
"Who is this...?" His mother's eyes softened and carried a hint of curiosity.
Michelle bit her lip. "This is Evan, my... friend."
"Friend? Such a handsome friend, why didn't you bring him to show to mom earlier?" Her mother smiled, but also revealed a hint of subtle probing.
Michelle felt a little awkward, but it wasn't a situation she could control. She smiled and waved to Evan, signaling him to come over.
Evan walked over and politely nodded to Michelle's mother, saying, "Hello, I'm Evan."
"Hello, may I ask what I can call you?" Evan continued to ask.
"Just call me Auntie," Michelle's mother responded with a smile.
Auntie looked around and found that there was no one in the corridor except for the medical staff and them.
"Evan, do you know why Michelle likes you?" Auntie suddenly asked.
Michelle heard this sentence and felt a tightness in her heart, but she was also very curious about how Evan would respond.
Evan looked at Michelle and then replied, "I think, perhaps it's because we have similar views on life and love. We both don't believe that marriage is the only form of love."
Michelle's mother took a deep breath after hearing this, as if digesting the sudden heavyweight information.
"I see. So, how do you think such a viewpoint would be received in this society?" her aunt asked.
"In this society, the view of being unmarried is mostly derogatory and not understood. Many people believe that marriage is a symbol of maturity and responsibility, and if one is not married, it's like lacking a certain qualification. But in reality, love and marriage are not always synonymous."
In Evan's words, there is both frankness and a hint of disdain.
Aunt nodded, her eyes revealing a complex emotion. "Each generation has its own ideas and values, and I can't expect you to accept our generation's thoughts. But, Michelle, have you ever thought about what the situation would be like today if your father had a stable family back then?"
Michelle stared at the cold white floor of the hospital, feeling a mix of emotions. Suddenly, she realized that even though her father had an affair, the other woman chose to leave when he needed her the most.
In contrast, she and her mother are still standing here, waiting for the doctor's final diagnosis.
"I...I'm not sure," Michelle finally answered.
At this moment, the door of the operating room opened, and the doctor took off the mask and walked out.
"The surgery was successful, but close observation is still needed," the doctor's words relieved everyone.
"Family members, please come over for a moment. There are some things that need to be explained to you."
Michelle turned to Evan, her eyes filled with new emotions and questions.
Evan can feel Michelle's changes, and he knows that this experience will make them reevaluate each other and their views on marriage and family once again.
Three people followed the doctor into another small room. The room was somewhat cramped, but very private.
The doctor spoke, "The surgery was generally successful, but due to age and physical condition, the recovery will be slower. There will be a period of rehabilitation ahead, and you will need to pay close attention and take care of the patient's condition."
Michelle and Evan exchanged a glance, understanding each other without saying a word.
In that moment, they both knew that no matter what the future held, they would face various difficulties and challenges in life.
Auntie looked at them, with a thousand words in her heart, but in the end, she only said one sentence: "No matter how you choose, home is a place that needs each other."
This sentence was like a beam of light, illuminating every corner of the room, and also shining into Michelle's heart.
