The arrangement for the dinner that day was quite sudden, or rather, it was confusing—a sense of bewilderment about how to conduct herself, especially for Xu Youning. Unlike others, she could not remain calm and composed while being alone with him.
She was unprepared. In her 26 years of life, nothing particularly significant had ever left her feeling at a loss. She had always been indifferent, whether towards people or events. It didn’t matter if she was happy or unwilling; it was just life. A slight compromise would suffice to move on without causing much of a stir, and it wouldn’t linger for long.
However, she didn’t know that this was different—this was about him.
Thus, this feeling seemed somewhat familiar to her, as if she had tasted this strange sensation before. It left a particularly strong impression on her. Even after many years, experiencing it again still felt intense.
She remembered after the dinner when they stood at the hotel entrance exchanging pleasantries. He deliberately walked over and smiled gently, asking her when they would set off, reminding her to pack her things in advance because he would come to pick her up.
Yet he didn’t specify what time he would arrive or where their first destination would be, as if everything had already been arranged and she just needed to follow his lead. She didn’t ask him anything either.
Reluctantly, she entrusted her Labrador to her best friend Chen Lingyi. When her friend asked if it was another long trip like before, she replied no but couldn’t explain further; this would be a different experience altogether. To escape her friend’s curious gaze and probing questions, she decided to wait until everything was over to share more.
Given the current situation, she couldn’t grasp the developments at all. It felt as though his mere presence would dictate the course of her life; she had lost all agency, including control over her own decisions.
And yet, she showed no signs of complaint.
That day, she packed her luggage early. She took only a small suitcase with a few pieces of clothing because she didn’t know how long they would be gone or where they were headed, so she packed two sets each of thin and thick clothes. She tidied up everything at home and lay down in bed early but couldn’t fall asleep; there was no drowsiness.
She thought for a long time about many things—their encounter this time, the events that had unfolded over these few days, and even memories from childhood. After such a long period of blankness, encountering him again felt surreal.
She could only confirm one thing: she liked him.
Once again, she confirmed this expected situation.
But for her now, liking someone was not everything in life; it was merely a release of her emotions, a way to express her feelings. She probably wouldn't make any overt gestures.
Having come to this realization, she felt a sense of comfort and relaxation. The tension she initially felt about this unexpected outing had lessened, allowing her to interact and work with him in a professional manner.
She felt fortunate for her rationality and professionalism.
She told herself.
“Muhhhhhh~,” at six forty-five in the morning, Xu Youning woke up after the fifth ring of the alarm. She had thought too late the night before and only started feeling sleepy around one thirty in the morning. After lying in bed in a daze for a while, she finally mustered the willpower to get up.
Looking at herself in the mirror, she noticed two large dark circles under her eyes, lacking any vitality compared to when she stayed up late working. It wasn't until she splashed cold water on her face that her brain seemed to boot up. While brushing her teeth, she thought about what time Chen Jiahàn would likely arrive and calculated whether she had enough time for another bowl of snail noodles for breakfast.
“Ding.”
