In the face of Shen Qingya's cold rejection, Li Qingyun's anger and despair burned like a raging flame, reducing his remaining sanity to ashes. He could not accept that he had lost the wealth of his past life, nor could he bear the thought that Shen Qingya was living such a happy and fulfilling life in this one. His heart was filled with resentment and fury, leading him to decide on the most extreme measures.
The next day, Shen Qingya and Xiaocui went out to run errands as usual, unaware that danger was quietly approaching. Li Qingyun hid in the shadows, gripping a sharp kitchen knife tightly in his hand, his eyes gleaming with madness, consumed by a single thought—mutual destruction.
As Shen Qingya and Xiaocui walked through a quiet alley, Li Qingyun suddenly lunged out, brandishing the knife towards them. Shen Qingya gasped; she never expected Li Qingyun would act in such a way.
In that critical moment, Xiaocui stepped forward and shielded Shen Qingya. Her gaze was resolute, showing no hint of fear. Li Qingyun's knife struck Xiaocui, instantly staining her clothes with blood.
Shen Qingya watched in horror as the scene unfolded before her; her heart was filled with grief and rage. She cried out for help while desperately pushing Li Qingyun away. People nearby heard the commotion and rushed over to subdue Li Qingyun.
Xiaocui collapsed in Shen Qingya's arms, her face pale but a faint smile appeared at the corner of her mouth: "Miss, I... I'm fine, as long as you are safe."
Shen Qingya held Xiaocui tightly, tears blurring her vision: "Xiaocui, why were you so foolish? Why did you take the knife for me?"
Xiaocui gently shook her head: "Because... because you are worth it."
Fortunately, Li Qingyun's attack was not fatal; after timely medical treatment, Xiaocui was out of danger. However, this incident left Shen Qingya utterly despondent regarding Li Qingyun. She decided to use legal means to protect herself and Xiaocui and ensure that Li Qingyun would pay for his actions.
Li Qingyun's world completely collapsed at that moment. Overwhelmed by anger and despair, he made an irreversible mistake. When he came to his senses, he found himself locked in a dark, damp dungeon, the cold, hard walls mirroring his current feelings.
In the cell, Li Qingyun faced the endless darkness and silence alone, filled with resentment and regret. He could not believe he had fallen so far, from a scholar to a prisoner. His once cherished dreams and hopes had turned into mere illusions.
As the day of judgment approached, Li Qingyun repeatedly reflected on his actions in the cell. He knew that what he had done was irreparable, yet his heart was still consumed by obsession for Shen Qingya. He could not understand why he had lost everything while Shen Qingya could lead a happy life.
On the day of the trial, Li Qingyun saw Shen Qingya and Xiaocui; there was not a trace of sympathy in their eyes, only deep disappointment and anger. A strong impulse surged within Li Qingyun; he wanted to explain, to make amends, but he knew it was too late.
The judge read out Li Qingyun's charges; he was sentenced to severe punishment for attempting to murder Shen Qingya. At that moment, upon hearing the verdict, Li Qingyun felt an unprecedented despair. He realized that his life was ruined, yet he still could not let go of his feelings for Shen Qingya.
Before being taken away, Li Qingyun cast a deep glance at Shen Qingya. He wanted to say something but ultimately just lowered his head helplessly. Shen Qingya turned away, unwilling to look at him again. Although she felt some sympathy for Li Qingyun's plight, she knew this was self-inflicted; his actions had led to this outcome.
Xiaocui tightly held Shen Qingya's hand, offering her support and comfort. They understood that while this incident cast a shadow over their lives, they could not afford to stop moving forward. They still had their own lives to continue and a brighter future waiting for them to pursue.
