At Aomori University, Ji Yuan was engaged in a lively discussion with his mentor, unaware that in a comprehensive laboratory building at Pantech University, several elderly men with white beards were arguing passionately, unable to convince one another.
"What?"
"Buy trending topics?!"
"I absolutely refuse!"
"We are engaged in scientific research, not the entertainment industry. Buying trending topics is ridiculous!"
An old man with a slight limp leaned on his cane as he walked, his face flushed with anger as he shouted. His raised index finger seemed ready to poke the nose of the person standing opposite him, clearly at the boiling point of rage.
However, the group facing him consisted of middle-aged individuals, all in their thirties or older. They appeared submissive and dared not retort against the old man's tirade. Their demeanor was more obedient than that of a grandchild facing their grandfather.
After a long pause, a refined middle-aged man with an air of scholarly demeanor adjusted his glasses perched on his nose and placed the textbook he was holding on the table. Then, under the gaze of several colleagues, he mustered his courage and managed to say with a slight smile at the corners of his mouth:
"Elder Qi, it's not that we want to create hype; it's just that today's young people are more interested in trending celebrities."
A single sentence encapsulates the hardships of scientific research. In their era, when young people were asked about their dreams, eight or nine out of ten would say they wanted to become scientists. However, as they grew up and achieved their dream of becoming researchers, they discovered that the most enduring companion of a scientist is endless loneliness. They can only imagine the glory that comes with success to motivate themselves, holding firm to their beliefs as they navigate through numerous obstacles.
Yet, the vast majority of scientific work remains anonymous throughout one's life. Some key projects have confidentiality requirements that prevent any disclosure. Those involved in such work are fortunate; others engaged in specialized research, such as Nuclear Weapons Experts, may toil for a lifetime to produce remarkable results, but due to confidentiality needs, their names may never surface in public consciousness or be recorded in history.
Moreover, significant scientific breakthroughs are not easily achieved. There are millions of scientific researchers in the country, yet only a few are widely recognized. The elder known as Elder Qi's expression shifted from anger to a more composed demeanor as he tapped his cane on the floor and said, "But it can't be done this way!"
Everyone listened, their eyes flashing with hope, and they quickly began to persuade.
"Elder Qi, please don't blame Vice Dean Zhang."
"Nowadays, young people all aspire to be big stars, top influencers, or internet celebrities, but none of them want to become scientists."

"If we old folks continue to remain silent like this, our scientific research talent pool will soon face a gap!"
"Elder Qi, the times have changed!"
"If we could, we certainly wouldn't want to 'show our faces' and make a fuss like internet celebrities."
"However, in recent years, the effectiveness of traditional media channels—television, radio, and broadcasts—has noticeably declined."
"Exactly! Today's young people don't even like watching TV anymore; they spend all their time supporting trending stars and engaging in those simulation games."
Seeing that Elder Qi's attitude had softened, everyone chimed in with their opinions. This nearly made Elder Qi's head spin, and he felt like swatting away the buzzing "flies" in front of him.
