Under the pitch-black night sky, Wu Sheng and Hang Lin walked on the dimly lit streets, illuminated by lanterns. The two of them passed through several alleys and finally arrived at a gorgeously decorated, heavy atmosphere gambling house. On the stone-carved door frame were three large characters " Xuantian Gambling House," and in the center, there was a purple flag hanging upside down, embroidered with a somewhat obscure scroll pattern.
"This place is indeed out of the ordinary," Hang Lin looked around, especially at that flag, with a slight frown on his brow.
"Yeah, but the atmosphere here feels off," Wu Sheng bit his lip and instantly transformed into a commoner youth, while Hang Lin also transformed into a pale-faced, thin scholar.
The two pushed open the heavy door and entered the gambling den. A mix of alcohol, sweat, and tea filled the air. Inside the den, the sound of people talking and laughing filled the air, while various gambling tables lined the walkways. Commoners, merchants, and young aristocrats of all kinds gathered here, drinking, throwing dice, or entertaining guests with smiles, each enjoying their chosen poison.
Wu Sheng and Hang Lin observed quietly for a while, then chose a relatively secluded corner to sit down and discuss quietly.
"The atmosphere here is too oppressive, perhaps The Immortal in the Painting has appeared here before," Wu Sheng said solemnly.
"Indeed. So, what should we do next?" Hang Lin asked.
"I think we should start by getting to know the gamblers here," Wu Sheng said, looking at the people in the casino with a slight intensity.
"Okay, then let's split up to avoid drawing attention," Hang Lin paused, then suddenly smiled, "Don't forget, this isn't the immortal realm, we need to adapt to the rules here."
After nodding to each other, the two of them delved into the crowd, closely observing the people inside the casino.
The person in charge of rolling the dice wore an unnatural smile, seemingly concealing some kind of guilt. Every corner exuded a strong sense of ominousness, as if it could erupt at any moment.
"This place seems like a huge trap, full of deceit and illusions. Wu Sheng felt a chill in his heart.
Under the dazzling lights, Hang Lin caught a glimpse of a painting hanging next to a gambling table, depicting a dragon perched in the clouds. The dragon's eyes seemed lifelike, as if they could leap out of the frame at any moment."
"You see that painting, it seems somewhat unusual," Hang Lin whispered to Wu Sheng.
"Indeed, those eyes seem to be observing everything here. Such a painting is probably not something an ordinary person could create," Wu Sheng continued, "And the atmosphere here is completely different from that in the painting, which exudes a sense of mystery and depth."
At this moment, the two of them noticed a young gambler walking up to the painting, seemingly unusually interested in it. Unlike the other gamblers, this young man did not appear flashy or cunning, but rather had a quiet and reserved demeanor. He stared at the painting for a long time, then his expression suddenly changed, as if he had just realized something.
"We need to keep an eye on that person," Wu Sheng said squinting.
Hang Lin nodded, and the two of them immediately delved into the gambling den, seemingly drawn in by the young gambler and the unusual atmosphere.
They arrived at the gambling table, deciding to join the game in an attempt to get closer to the young gambler.
Wu Sheng and Hang Lin deliberately threw a large amount of silver, attracting the attention of the surrounding crowd. However, their real purpose was the young gambler.
The gambling began, Wu Sheng and Hang Lin played cards while observing. Finally, the young gambler also sat at the gambling table, but he did not place a bet, just quietly observed.
"This person is really strange. People in the gambling den usually immerse themselves in the game, but he is completely different." Hang Lin conveyed his thoughts to Wu Sheng in a subtle way through a smile at the corner of his mouth.
"Perhaps he is the one we are looking for." Wu Sheng felt a stir in his heart, feeling that things seemed to be getting closer to the truth.
There are people at the gambling table who are getting impatient. Wu Sheng and Hang Lin without hesitation took out a large stack of silver bills and piled them on the table, immediately attracting everyone's attention.
"Wow! The two newcomers seem very confident!" exclaimed a bystander.
"Alright, let the game begin!" The middle-aged gambler across from Wu Sheng and Hang Lin each drew three cards.
The middle-aged gambler's techniques were extremely skilled, almost imperceptible, but Wu Sheng and Hang Lin were not ordinary people. After a few rounds, they understood that the middle-aged gambler was indeed cheating.
"It seems like luck is really on my side today! Won again!" The middle-aged gambler showed a smug smile and collected all the gambling stakes on the table.
At this point, Hang Lin gave a signal to Wu Sheng, who understood and immediately stood up, saying, "We're done playing."
"Well, why are you leaving so soon? We've only just started," the middle-aged gambler said with a puzzled look, but also a hint of cunning.
At that moment, the young gambler who had been watching finally spoke, but what he said was a sentence that puzzled everyone present.
"Another scam."
The gambler's tone was ethereal, as if coming from beyond the heavens. Wu Sheng and Hang Lin exchanged a glance, both feeling a chill creeping over them.
At that moment, the body of the young gambler suddenly turned into a white light and disappeared on the spot.
"He is another incarnation of The Immortal in the Painting!" Wu Sheng murmured.
"What did he mean by that last statement?" Hang Lin asked.
"I don't know, probably saw us being played," Wu Sheng replied.
Wu Sheng and Hang Lin left, the atmosphere in the casino became noticeably heavy, as if everyone sensed something.
At this moment, the disappeared onlooker suddenly appeared, quietly following the middle-aged cheater as if everything was within his calculations.
The next morning, the middle-aged cheating gambler lay dead next to a valuable painting, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth. His pockets were empty, his face was purple, and it was clear that he had been dead for some time. The painting next to him was the one sent by The Immortal in the Painting. His death, like that of the other victims, was mysterious and seemed to point directly to the heart.
Hang Lin and Wu Sheng appeared once again, catching sight of this scene.
"It seems that The Immortal in the Painting has struck again," Hang Lin frowned.
"Indeed, this time the target is a cheating gambler. It seems he is not going to spare anyone of wrongdoing," Wu Sheng told Hang Lin.
"So, who is his next target? This series of events seems to point to a larger mystery," Hang Lin said with a solemn tone.
"We need to continue the investigation," Wu Sheng knew that they were getting closer to uncovering the true identity of The Immortal in the Painting, but at the same time, it was becoming more and more dangerous.
The two of them left the casino and blended into the bustling crowd at the market, disappearing into the layers of people.
