Su Luan finally understood the reason behind Linyuan's flickering expression.
During her recovery, soldiers suddenly burst into Mo Zhe's home and forcibly took away a woman from the White-Haired Clan. Mo Zhe also found himself in a precarious situation. Linyuan, recalling their past connection, imprisoned him in the palace, but she never expected he would come to confront her with a sword.
Linyuan rushed in with her guards, her eyes red and unable to move: "Master, I... I..."
"Don't call me Master! We barely know each other, so why would you harm me and my wife like this?"
She was at a loss for words.
In the next moment, someone restrained Mo Zhe and took him away. She cried out in panic, wanting to chase after him, but Linyuan suddenly pulled her back.
The anger in her heart surged uncontrollably: "It was you, wasn't it? I let something slip back then, so you..."
Her mind was filled with overwhelming rage; she could no longer think rationally.
In a daze, she recalled the scene from the Celestial Realm when her Master was taken away due to Linyuan's false accusations. She should never have trusted Linyuan from the beginning!
"No!" he interrupted her, holding onto her tightly. "I didn't..."
"Slap—" The sound cut off abruptly.
Linyuan's head was turned aside by her slap, his body stiffening. She slowly stood up, glaring at him with bloodshot eyes as if pouring all her hatred into each word: "I will not believe you!"
Everything turned upside down in an instant. She was imprisoned. Five days later, her door was opened, and Linyuan, looking exhausted, said: "The woman from the White-Haired Clan has been executed. Mo Zhe has been exiled for harboring an ominous person. However, on the day of his departure, he was found dead..."
She screamed and rushed forward, hitting him wildly. "You bad person! It's all because of you!"
"No," he said, his eyes reddened as he stood still, allowing her to hit him like a statue. "There were multiple instances of white hair found on him, which forced us to investigate. Even though I am the Emperor, there are times when I cannot protect those I want to protect."
Exhausted, she collapsed onto the ground.
Linyuan stepped forward to help her but was fiercely pushed away by her.
The room fell silent for a moment as she squinted to look at him.
He looked much more haggard, with stubble covering his chin, and at that moment, like her, tears slowly slid down the corners of his eyes.
It wasn't that she didn't trust Linyuan, but rather that she was angry at herself for being unable to protect Mo Zhe.
He had visited her more than once, but always when she was asleep. But how could she possibly sleep with such sadness in her heart?
Days passed like this until one night, he sat by her bed and gently said, "Tomorrow I will depart for the front lines to fight against the enemy. You must take good care of yourself while I'm away."
She pretended to be asleep and didn't respond, but her hand under the blanket tightened quietly.
In a daze, it seemed he sighed softly, and a gentle kiss fell on her forehead. His tone was sorrowful: "Su Luan, is it so hard to believe me?"
Tears fell from her eyes.
Footsteps echoed softly as he slowly left, each step felt like it was stepping on her heart, leaving her unable to speak through her sobs.
The next day, Linyuan left with the army for battle.
She sat alone in the empty palace, clutching the jade pendant and stroking it repeatedly. Something she once despised had now become her only solace.
She thought that when Linyuan returned, they would reconcile, but as days passed, a terrible news arrived from the front lines two weeks later.
Linyuan had died from severe injuries in the war without receiving timely medical treatment. It felt as if her world had collapsed in an instant.
The body was brought back three days later, and she trembled as she knelt before it.
Linyuan lay in a large coffin, his wounds bandaged, his handsome face pale and serene, as if he were merely sleeping. But she knew he would never wake again.
She could faintly recall his last words before he left.
"Su Luan, is it so hard to believe me?"
At that time, they had quarreled, and she had made him sad, but she never expected that he would take such a harsh revenge on her.
She held him tightly, crying hysterically, her head pounding with pain.
In the next moment, everything around her suddenly twisted into white. Linyuan in her arms gradually disappeared. She frantically reached out but to no avail. A woman slowly approached her, looking at her with eyes full of sorrow.
She stared blankly at the woman as she crouched down before her. The woman's white robes hung limply, and a jade pendant was clearly visible at her waist.
