Chapter 8: All In
In the sound of Silk and Bamboo, Wen Qingyu's dance was as graceful as a startled swan.
Yan Zhi Xi was taken aback; he never expected this woman to possess such extraordinary talent. Her slender waist was both flexible and powerful, a stark contrast to the pale and feeble woman from earlier.
It wasn't until Wen Qingyu drew a dagger from her sleeve and pressed it against Wen Ruxue's neck that Yan Zhi Xi suddenly realized—
So this woman had been pretending to be docile today.
"Wen Qingyu, you have some nerve. If you dare to harm Xue Er, I will never let you go," Yan Zhi Xi gritted his teeth.
The surrounding guards drew their gleaming weapons, while Wen Qingyu held Wen Ruxue tightly, her gaze cold as she looked at Yan Zhi Xi. "Let me go, and I will spare your Xue Er."
"Not a chance!"
Yan Zhi Xi clenched his fists, feeling both angry and resentful—angry at himself for being deceived by this woman, resentful that his moment of distraction had put Xue Er in danger.
Wen Qingyu applied pressure, causing a thin line of blood to appear on Wen Ruxue's neck.
"Your Majesty, save me!" Wen Ruxue cried out in desperation.
Yan Zhi Xi gritted his teeth. "Fine, I will let you go."
At Yan Zhi Xi's signal, the surrounding guards sheathed their swords. Wen Qingyu was drenched in cold sweat; being physically weak, she had learned some self-defense techniques. She strained herself, holding onto Wen Ruxue as she leaped over the palace wall.
This woman actually knows martial arts! He truly underestimated her!
The figure of Wen Qingyu disappeared into the silent night. Yan Zhi Xi said fiercely, "Catch her, alive!"
The guards pursued relentlessly, confronting her at the outermost palace gate.
A black horse was tied at the entrance.
Wen Qingyu pressed the acupoint of Wen Ruxue and mounted the horse, saying to Yan Zhi Xi, who had followed her all the way, "Once I reach a safe place, I will naturally return your heart."
Yan Zhi Xi stood in the darkness, his expression unclear.
After galloping for several miles, when the pursuers were no longer in sight, Wen Qingyu finally breathed a sigh of relief.
She was already at her limit and was preparing to find a place to rest when an arrow struck the horse's hind leg. The horse startled and reared up.
As she fell from the horse, a figure swiftly swooped in and caught Wen Ruxue. Wen Qingyu, however, fell heavily to the ground.
Lying on her back, Yan Zhi Xi approached and stomped hard on her injured right hand.
In the firelight, a wicked smile curled at the corner of Yan Zhi Xi's mouth. "Wen Qingyu, you truly have opened my eyes. Do you think with your little tricks you can escape from my grasp? You really overestimate yourself."
She was indeed overestimating herself, but as she became acutely aware of the lingering feelings she had for this man deep within her heart, that sense of guilt made her tremble with fear.
At that moment, she could not care about anything else; only one thought filled her mind: to escape this deep palace and flee from this man.
Perhaps if they never met again, she could completely sever this obsession that had seeped into her very bones.
The flames grew dimmer, and in a daze, Wen Qingyu heard Yan Zhi Xi coldly instructing someone, "Come here, disable this woman's martial arts and also sever the tendons in her right hand."
Wen Qingyu gasped for breath and suddenly opened her eyes. She stared at her right hand, stained with dark brown blood, feeling completely numb.
What terrified her even more was that she was now completely defenseless, her hands and feet bound by thin Gold Chains to the Carved Canopy Bed in her room.
"You're awake!"
Yan Zhi Xi sat beside her, his fingers gliding from her face to her neck and then to her chest. Wen Qingyu felt a tingling heat rise where his fingertips had wandered.
As she struggled, her wounds reopened, but the pain did not stop the strange sensations.
"Yan Zhi Xi, what have you done to me?" Wen Qingyu gasped out, broken moans escaping her lips.
Yan Zhi Xi continued his actions without pause, a playful flame burning in his eyes. "I was afraid Consort might not enjoy herself later, so I had someone feed you some stimulating medicine."
Yan Zhi Xi smiled wickedly. "Today I discovered that Consort Yu is even more capable than I imagined. Not only can you dance, but you also possess martial arts skills. I thought perhaps those past punishments were nothing in your eyes, so today we shall try a different method."
