Chapter 10: Clouds of Doubt Reborn
Wen Qingyu dozed off again by the window, and when she woke up, several plump, fresh leaves were resting on the windowsill.
"Thank you," Wen Qingyu said to the empty courtyard. No one responded, and she continued to murmur, "I'm quite good at playing tunes with leaves. Let me play one for you."
Wen Qingyu picked up a leaf with her uninjured left hand and gently blew into it. She closed her eyes, her beautiful face adorned with a simple smile.
The melody was soft and melodious, very pleasant to hear.
The tranquility of the afternoon courtyard was abruptly interrupted by hurried footsteps. Before Wen Qingyu could turn around, a rough hand seized her arm from behind.
"Who taught you this?" Yan Zhi Xi stared at Wen Qingyu with an unreadable expression, shock overwhelming him; this tune...
During the turmoil in the palace years ago, when he was being hunted by the Crown Prince and was rescued by Xue Er deep in Guilin, she had casually picked a leaf and played this tune for him.
At that time, Xue Er had her face covered with a veil, and as she played, she lifted a corner of it, revealing her delicate and lovely chin. That encounter left a lasting impression on him, and he secretly vowed that once the crisis passed, he would find her and love her for life.
Yan Zhi Xi's grip was like an iron claw, rendering Wen Qingyu immobile.
She turned her head away and replied indifferently, "What does it matter to you who I learned from?"
Wen Qingyu's indifference made Yan Zhi Xi both anxious and angry; a sudden wave of inexplicable panic surged within him as he eagerly sought to know the answer.
"Quick, my patience is limited." Yan Zhi Xi's deep gaze was filled with warning.
Wen Qingyu sneered, wanting to say a few more mocking words, but suddenly a wave of nausea surged in her throat. She turned away, covering her mouth as she retched painfully.
Yan Zhi Xi was taken aback and released his grip. "What’s wrong with you?"
His words rarely conveyed any concern, yet Wen Qingyu felt nothing at all.
She wiped her mouth. "Don't worry, after all, my second brother's life is still in your hands. I guarantee I won't die before you get to Xue Er."
She paused, then flashed him a faint smile, speaking each word clearly: "I just feel sick when I see you!"
"You..." Yan Zhi Xi pointed at Wen Qingyu, wishing he could teach her a lesson. But seeing her pale face, he gritted his teeth and suppressed his violent impulse.
At that moment, a maidservant rushed over from Wen Ruxue's side, panting heavily. "Your Majesty, it's bad! Consort Xue has fainted."
Yan Zhi Xi shot a warning glance at Wen Qingyu and strode away.
Mu Xue Palace.
"Xue Er, where do you feel unwell?"
Yan Zhi Xi sat by the bedside as Wen Ruxue nestled into his embrace.
“Xue Er, it’s nothing, I just suddenly felt dizzy while taking a walk earlier. I think it’s the residual poison acting up. The maids made a big fuss and disturbed the Emperor, it’s Xue Er’s fault.”
Yan Zhi Xi looked down at Wen Ruxue’s beautiful features, his gaze rarely showing a hint of scrutiny and impatience.
He had always known that Wen Ruxue had placed spies around him, which is why she always seemed to know whenever he visited Chenyu Palace.
In the past, he indulged her and let her do as she pleased, but after hearing Wen Qingyu play the leaves today, some doubts and unease began to surface.
He pushed Wen Ruxue away, stood up with his hands behind his back, facing away from her. After a moment, he asked softly, “Xue Er, do you still remember our first meeting five years ago?”
