Chapter 18: Painful Heart
Since Wen Qingyu's death, Wen Ruxue had been living quite comfortably.
She was gone, and Wen Ruxue no longer had to live in fear of someone revealing the truth.
When Zhang Gonggong came to deliver the imperial edict, she carefully dressed up and went to the Imperial Study.
"Your servant greets Your Majesty."
Wen Ruxue bowed gracefully to Yan Zhi Xi, who stood with his hands behind his back by the window.
However, Yan Zhi Xi did not respond for a long time, as if he had not heard her voice at all.
A wave of panic surged within Wen Ruxue; this situation had never occurred before. She knelt for a while longer, feeling her knees ache, and timidly called out, "Your Majesty."
Finally, Yan Zhi Xi turned around, his handsome face revealing no emotion. He did not gently help her up as he had in the past but spoke in a flat tone, "Get up."
The calmness of his voice startled Wen Ruxue, making her heart race with fear.
She forced herself to stand up despite her numb legs and raised a smiling face. "May I ask what Your Majesty wishes to discuss with me?"
Yan Zhi Xi quietly observed Wen Ruxue's innocent face for a long time, and a chill began to grow in his heart.
He suddenly felt afraid. What if Wen Ruxue was truly deceiving him? What should he do then?
"Did you bring that hairpin? Show it to me."
Yan Zhi Xi took a deep breath and finally asked.
"I brought it. This is a token of love between the Emperor and me, I, Si Si, always keep it with me." Wen Ruxue sighed in relief, smiling brightly as she took the jade hairpin out of her pocket and handed it to Yan Zhi Xi.
Yan Zhi Xi held the jade hairpin and stared at it for a long time. Suddenly, he looked up sharply, his gaze piercing and profound. "Consort X, I want to know how this hairpin ended up in your hands from Wen Qingyu."
He was probing for answers, and Wen Ruxue's momentarily stiff and startled expression was caught by Yan Zhi Xi. His hand, concealed beneath the dragon-patterned robe, tightened into a fist.
"Your Majesty, what do you mean? Xue Er doesn't understand." Wen Ruxue said pitifully, "This hairpin is just Xue Er's..."
With a loud slap, Yan Zhi Xi slammed his palm on the table, interrupting Wen Ruxue's words.
"Wen Ruxue, you have quite the audacity. I have already sent my secret guards to uncover the truth; do you still want to deceive me?" Yan Zhi Xi stood up and walked over to Wen Ruxue, then softened his tone, speaking slowly and deliberately: "If you do not confess the truth now, I can order the complete annihilation of the Wen Family!"
Wen Ruxue fell to her knees with a thud, weeping: "Your Majesty, please don't... I..."
Wen Ruxue tremblingly recounted how years ago she found this hairpin unique. Although Wen Qingyu originally had a pair of them, one had been lost at some point, and she had taken the remaining one from Wen Qingyu.
Unexpectedly, due to a series of misunderstandings, Yan Zhi Xi mistook her for someone else.
Later, when they both entered the palace together, fearing her secret would be exposed, she framed Wen Qingyu for it.
Yan Zhi Xi's expression grew increasingly grim. The sense of emptiness following Wen Qingyu's death was suddenly replaced by a piercing pain.
"Your Majesty, I know I was wrong. I truly love you," Wen Ruxue pleaded, clutching the hem of Yan Zhi Xi's robe, tears streaming down her face.
"You love me, yet you can harm other innocent people," Yan Zhi Xi kicked Wen Ruxue away. "Guards, take Wen Ruxue to the Ancestral Hall."
"Please, Your Majesty, no!"
Wen Ruxue was dragged away by the guards, her desperate cries echoing in the desolate hall for a long time.
Yan Zhi Xi pressed two hairpins tightly against his chest, feeling a sharp pain in his heart.
"Yan Zhi Xi, one day you will regret what you have done today."
Wen Qingyu's words echoed once more.
Yan Zhi Xi closed his eyes in agony. "Wen Qingyu, your curse has come true. I truly regret it."
