Chapter Hidden Paradise
Wen Qingyu woke up to find it was already dusk.
The kitchen was filled with thick smoke, as if it were on fire. Just as she was about to step forward to investigate, Rui Xi rushed out, covering her mouth, her face covered in ash.
"What happened?" Wen Qingyu nearly got knocked over by the reckless Rui Xi.
"Cough cough, I was making dinner, but the fire didn't start," Rui Xi coughed painfully. Wen Qingyu wanted to go into the kitchen to take a look, but Rui Xi stopped her, saying, "Sister Qing Yu, don't go in. My brother is inside; we don't need to worry about it."
Wen Qingyu was taken aback. "Zhui Feng is back?"
Rui Xi nodded. "Yes, it's almost the Spring Festival. My brother bought a lot of things back this time."
Having stayed in Yiyun Valley for over a month, she had only seen Zhui Feng a few times. This man had sharp eyebrows and bright eyes, his thin lips often pressed tightly together. At first glance, he seemed cold, but Wen Qingyu felt he must be a gentle man.
After dinner, Zhui Feng practiced swordsmanship in front of the wooden house under the moonlight.
Rui Xi was helping Wen Qingyu brew medicine, tossing poisonous scorpions, snakes, centipedes, and toads into the pot to boil into a thick black concoction. Even though Wen Qingyu had been drinking this Four Poison Soup for a while now, she still felt nauseous just looking at it.
"Rui Xi, how did you come up with this method?" Wen Qingyu asked curiously while fanning the flames with a fan.
Rui Xi yawned and stretched lazily. "This is called using poison to counteract poison. My mother is a Western Region Shaman, and this is quite common in the Western Regions. I've picked up some knowledge from her."
Wen Qingyu found it strange that Rui Xi exhibited some characteristics of the Western Regions—her bold personality and poor command of the Chinese language—while Chasing Wind was entirely a person of the Central Plains.
Perhaps Rui Xi sensed Wen Qingyu's thoughts and said softly, "I followed my mother to the Western Regions, while my brother stayed with my father in the Central Plains. Six months ago, my brother wrote to me, and that's why I came to the Central Plains."
Without needing Rui Xi to explain, Wen Qingyu already understood that Chasing Wind had written to her for the purpose of saving himself. However, they had never interacted before; why would he want to save her?
After preparing the medicine, Wen Qingyu frowned as she drank it all, and Rui Xi returned to her room to rest.
Wen Qingyu sat under the eaves, watching Chasing Wind practice his swordplay in the night. In the hazy moonlight, the sword glimmered coldly like a silver dragon unsheathed.
Every once in a while, Chasing Wind sheathed his sword and walked over, slightly furrowing his brow as he looked at Wen Qingyu. "Are you waiting for me?"
"Yes, I actually have a question I've been wanting to ask you," Wen Qingyu replied with a faint smile. "Why do you want to save me?"
Chasing Wind leaned against a pillar with his sword in hand, turned his gaze toward the crescent moon, and after a long pause, he replied softly, "You will know in the future."
With that, he turned and walked back to his room. After taking a couple of steps, he stopped again. "It's late; you should rest early."
Though Chasing Wind had an aloof personality, he was attentive and considerate.
He often descended from the mountain and would be away from the valley for ten days or half a month at a time. To ensure that the two weak women wouldn't feel bored staying in the mountains, he specially set up a maze at the entrance of the valley and made a swing out of green bamboo for them to play on.
One day, when the sunlight spilled warmly across the ground, Wen Qingyu gently swayed on the swing but wore a gloomy expression. Rui Xi noticed this and hurriedly asked, "Sister Qing Yu, what's wrong?"
"I want to go down the mountain to take a look."
Rui Xi hurriedly waved his hands, "No, no, before my brother left, he told us we couldn't leave the valley at will. The Dog Emperor has many spies, and I'm afraid you might get caught again."
"It won't happen. How could he possibly find a dead person?" Wen Qingyu smirked, "I'm going down the mountain not for anything else, but to inquire about my second brother's whereabouts. I have a strong feeling that my second brother is still alive."
