Chapter 9: Never Believed
Wen Qingyu did not want to argue with the two women any further and said softly, "It's nothing, Rui Xi, let's go."
She had just taken two steps when a piercing cry suddenly came from behind her.
"Your Majesty, please help me! Just now, I was admiring the plum blossoms here with Consort An, and Consort Yu complained that we were blocking her way. Her maid rushed up without distinguishing right from wrong and slapped us."
Wen Qingyu turned around sharply, not expecting that her good intentions would be met with such betrayal. She stared incredulously at the weeping consort, whose hand trembled beneath her cloak.
This palace is terrifying.
"Is that so?" Yan Zhi Xi did not look at the woman on the ground but fixed his gaze on Wen Qingyu.
Rui Xi wanted to explain but was stopped by Wen Qingyu. She curled her lips and said, "If you want to punish someone, go ahead."
Yan Zhi Xi was taken aback. Wen Qingyu pressed her lips together, looking stubborn. Her white hair seemed to blend into the snow around her.
He suddenly felt anxious and hurriedly stepped forward to take her hand in his, indulgently saying, "How could I bear to punish you? As long as you're happy."
Wen Qingyu pulled her hand away; she did not appreciate Yan Zhi Xi's indulgence. He had always been this way with Wen Ruxue, allowing her to do as she pleased with her.
Yan Zhi Xi also realized this and his expression darkened as he experienced for the first time what it meant to be at a loss for words.
"Your Majesty, please continue to enjoy the flowers. I will take my leave."
Wen Qingyu turned to leave, and Rui Xi looked at Yan Zhi Xi, snorting, "You never believed Sister Qingyu; you are not worthy of her."
The two women witnessing this scene trembled. That woman was not only rude, but even her maid was unable to act properly, yet the Emperor showed no signs of reprimanding them.
"Your Majesty, what should we do about these two women?" Zhang Gonggong asked in a low voice.
Yan Zhi Xi stood in the snow, pondering Rui Xi's words, a cold glint flashing in her eyes. "What exactly happened today? If there is even a hint of deceit, I will have your tongues cut out."
In the following days, Yan Zhi Xi did not come to Chenyu Palace for some reason. Rui Xi was glad for the peace and quiet, but Wen Qingyu grew increasingly worried.
"Sister, what are you thinking about?"
Rui Xi, sharp-eyed, flattered Wen Qingyu by massaging her shoulders while Wen Qingyu glanced around.
Although this time in the palace, Yan Zhi Xi did not have anyone monitor her or restrict her freedom, the shadows of that year were deeply etched in her heart.
"I am thinking about how heavily guarded the palace is and how Chasing Wind will rescue us," Wen Qingyu whispered.
Rui Xi smiled. "Don't worry; my brother is quite capable. Otherwise, how could he become the chief shadow guard beside the Dog Emperor? Last time he was captured by the Dog Emperor, it must have been a surprise attack. This time he will definitely be prepared."
"Rui Xi, how did Chasing Wind become Yan Zhi Xi's shadow guard?" This question had been troubling Wen Qingyu.
"Before, the Emperor saved my brother," Rui Xi sighed. "Actually, the Dog Emperor sometimes still has a bit of humanity."
Upon hearing this, Wen Qingyu was astonished.
Chasing Wind is a person with feelings and loyalty. Why did he betray Yan Zhi Xi and take the risk to save her?
When they were in Yiyun Valley, she had asked him, and at that time he said she would know in the future.
What exactly has Chasing Wind been hiding from her?
Confusion filled her mind, as if the truth was shrouded in mist.
Wen Qingyu furrowed her brows; she increasingly felt the urgency to see Chasing Wind.
