Chapter 40: Tied to Poison
Not long after, Wen Qingyu saw Chen Yan's stream.
After walking for half a day, Wen Qingyu was both tired and hungry, so she decided to stop and rest. While cupping water to drink by the stream, she suddenly felt a sharp pain in her ankle.
"Ah," Wen Qingyu's scream echoed in the quiet forest.
Not far away, a brightly colored snake quickly slithered into the dense grass and disappeared.
This snake was highly venomous, and soon Wen Qingyu's ankle turned black, her limbs gradually becoming numb, and the scenery before her blurred.
Leaning against a tree, Wen Qingyu held her stomach and felt a distinct fetal movement once again. The child's strong will to survive infected her; she gathered her strength and tried to sit up, but she had no strength at all.
She didn't want to die yet; she hadn't found Chasing Wind, hadn't found Wen Zhao, hadn't met her unborn child, and there was that man she had loved and hated...
So many regrets swept through her mind.
"Help! Help!"
Wen Qingyu shouted loudly, but her voice sounded like a mosquito.
Despair surged within her, yet her hand gently caressed her belly. "Is this a punishment for me? Child, your mother may not see you born..."
Wen Qingyu closed her eyes and smiled. This was her life; it always seemed to be tied to poison.
“Rui Xi, Rui Xi…”
Before her consciousness faded, Wen Qingyu vaguely heard Chen Yan's voice. She struggled to open her eyes, and a blurry male face appeared before her.
“It hurts.”
Wen Qingyu softly murmured in pain, her brows furrowing together.
Chen Yan was gently cutting open her bitten ankle with a dagger.
“Hang in there, it will be over soon.” Although he knew Wen Qingyu couldn't hear him, Chen Yan still spoke softly and gently to reassure her.
He leaned down and pressed his rough, cracked lips against Wen Qingyu's wound, sucking out the dark blood until it turned bright red, then sprinkled a layer of medicinal powder on her injury.
With the poison drawn out, Wen Qingyu soon regained consciousness. Upon opening her eyes, she saw Chen Yan squatting by a fire, roasting a rabbit.
Although she had faintly heard Chen Yan's voice before losing consciousness, seeing him in front of her now still surprised her.
This man had saved her multiple times; it seemed a bit strange, but after all, he had indeed rescued her.
“Brother Chen.”
Chen Yan turned around, a hint of a smile on his face. “Do you feel better? After you left this morning, I thought about how you are a weak woman and pregnant. It wouldn't be convenient for you to go down the mountain alone, so I decided to follow you.”
Without waiting for Wen Qingyu to ask, Chen Yan explained first.
Wen Qingyu felt her face heat up, realizing she had maliciously judged someone else's kindness. "Thank you."
"Never mind, eat something to fill your stomach first." Chen Yan took out a knife and cut off a fragrant rabbit leg, handing it to Wen Qingyu.
Having rushed over and with a child in her belly, Wen Qingyu was also starving. She no longer declined and devoured the food, completely disregarding the etiquette she had learned as a refined young lady.
Perhaps due to her hunger, Wen Qingyu found the taste of the roasted rabbit much more delicious than the porridge Chen Yan had made.
After finishing one leg, Wen Qingyu finally slowed down. Noticing Chen Yan staring at her, she wiped her mouth shyly and said, "Brother Chen, I must have embarrassed myself."
"If you like it, there's more. Don't rush," Chen Yan smiled and cut another rabbit leg for Wen Qingyu.
Wen Qingyu took it and looked at Chen Yan in surprise. Before her stood an ordinary face, but that smile just now was anything but ordinary.
After a brief rest, the sun began to set.
Chen Yan asked Wen Qingyu, "Rui Xi, it's getting late. How about we stay on the mountain for another night and head down tomorrow?"
Wen Qingyu declined his kind offer: "No, I need to hurry down. I'm worried about my friend and won't be able to sleep tonight anyway."
Wen Qingyu rushed to Chen Yan and cupped her fists, bidding farewell to him once again.
"Brother Chen, until we meet again." This time, Wen Qingyu was sincere.
"Until we meet again." Chen Yan replied softly.
Wen Qingyu turned to leave, but after taking a couple of steps, she heard Chen Yan call out to her, "Rui Xi, wait a moment."
Wen Qingyu turned back, "Brother Chen, is there anything else?"
Chen Yan stepped over the wild grass and walked towards her in a few strides, his figure restrained yet urgent.
"I was actually planning to descend the mountain in a couple of days. Since today is as good a day as any, why not go together with Rui Xi? It would be good to have someone to look out for each other."
Chen Yan looked down at Wen Qingyu, feeling quite flustered.
"Sure." Wen Qingyu smiled. She noticed Chen Yan's nervousness and could tell it was an improvised excuse. However, since Chen Yan had saved her twice, she had no reason to doubt him. "I couldn't ask for more."
