Chapter 41: Remarriage
With Chen Yan's escort, their descent down the mountain was much faster.
They arrived at the village below and finally found lodging at a villager's home.
After dinner, Chen Yan was pulled by Grandpa to play chess under the Big Huai Tree in the courtyard, while Wen Qingyu inquired with an old woman nearby, "Auntie, did you hear about anyone drowning in the river at the village entrance a couple of days ago?"
As she asked this, Wen Qingyu's heart raced. She feared hearing that there was no one, but she was even more afraid of hearing that there was someone—someone dead.
The old woman pondered for a moment. "Two days ago? Yes, there was such a case."
"Where is that person now?" Wen Qingyu asked excitedly.
"After waking up, they left. It seems they went to Zhou Town, which is several dozen miles away."
Wen Qingyu was taken aback. Why didn't Chasing Wind look for her nearby after waking up? Instead, he went somewhere else. But her joy outweighed her confusion, and she didn't think too much about it.
That night, trouble arose again.
The old woman mistakenly thought they were a couple and only prepared one room for them.
Seeing Wen Qingyu's troubled expression, Chen Yan was about to go out to speak with the old woman when Wen Qingyu grabbed his sleeve.
"Brother Chen, the old lady is quite elderly; let's not trouble her. We can just make do for one night."
Chen Yan hesitated, and Wen Qingyu joked again, "I believe Brother Chen is a gentleman, and as a pregnant woman, I have nothing to fear from you doing anything improper."
Chen Yan looked deeply at Wen Qingyu for a long time. "Alright then, I'll just sleep on the floor by the bed."
Wen Qingyu said nothing more and took the bedding from the cupboard, which Chen Yan helped her carry. "You rest; I'll manage on my own."
"Brother Chen, haven't you done this kind of thing before?"
Wen Qingyu sat by the bed, watching Chen Yan clumsily make the bed. She casually asked a question, but unexpectedly, Chen Yan's movements suddenly paused.
"Mm." Chen Yan replied softly. Wen Qingyu could tell he was unwilling to elaborate, so she didn't press further.
Wen Qingyu was almost asleep when she heard the sound of Chen Yan working.
He said, "Rui Xi, I've brought you here. How about I stay with you until you find your friend before leaving?"
Wen Qingyu's drowsiness vanished in an instant. She looked at Chen Yan, who was lying on the ground with his back to her, and suddenly felt that his silhouette was infinitely lonely.
"Okay, thank you, Brother Chen."
The next morning, Chen Yan and Wen Qingyu left the village early and traveled for a day until they reached Zhou Town.
Zhou Town was a transportation hub in the west, with high walls and strict guards. As the city gates were about to close, everyone passing through was searched and questioned one by one.
Wen Qingyu suddenly felt nervous; the scenes before her reminded her of some unpleasant memories.
"Don't be afraid; this is just a routine check. It's nothing," Chen Yan noticed Wen Qingyu's anxiety and gently reassured her.
Wen Qingyu smiled at Chen Yan, but her lips remained pale.
When it was their turn in line, Wen Qingyu's headscarf accidentally fell off, revealing her white hair, which caught the soldiers' attention. After the routine questioning, one soldier asked an additional question: "What is your relationship?"
A young woman with white hair and a man who appeared steady and honest yet exuded an intimidating aura stood before them.
This question startled Chen Yan, and the soldier immediately became alert, placing his hand on his sword sheath.
"Military Sir, we are husband and wife," Wen Qingyu quickly grasped Chen Yan's rough hand and shot him a reproachful glance. "My husband gets nervous and doesn't speak much; please forgive him, Military Sir."
Wen Qingyu then slipped some small silver coins to the soldier, allowing them to pass this checkpoint smoothly.
Wen Qingyu took a deep breath and said, "Soldiers these days are really becoming less reliable."
Chen Yan did not respond. When Wen Qingyu turned around, she saw Chen Yan staring blankly at the hand she had just held.
For a moment, Wen Qingyu felt a bit awkward. "Brother Chen, don't overthink it."
Chen Yan nodded slowly, seemingly realizing something, but remained silent.
This silence made Wen Qingyu uneasy. She racked her brain for something to say when Chen Yan suddenly looked down at her and said, "You seem very familiar with this excuse."
"What?" Wen Qingyu didn't understand the implication of Chen Yan's words.
"You... we are husband and wife."
Chen Yan spoke with difficulty, carrying a certain unspoken emotion. Wen Qingyu smiled dismissively, "This is the second time I've pretended to be someone else's wife."
"The last one was a friend I'm currently looking for."
