Chapter 4: Turmoil
Chen Yan's body shook violently, leaving him speechless for a long time.
"Do you think I'm an easy woman?" Wen Qingyu asked casually while trying to spot Chasing Wind in the crowd on the bustling street.
"No, no, you're a very good woman," Chen Yan interjected, his breath quickening with tension. He paused for a moment before asking with difficulty, "Then... what about your husband?"
Wen Qingyu, who had always seemed indifferent, hesitated for a long time before responding coldly, "He's dead."
Chen Yan halted his steps, watching Wen Qingyu's slender figure as he clenched his fists.
That night, they stayed at an inn called Fortune Inn.
Zhou Town truly lived up to its reputation as an important place; during dinner, people of all kinds and various news converged here.
The conversation at the table next to Wen Qingyu caught her attention.
"I heard Jing Wang is rebelling, secretly recruiting troops and preparing to march straight to the imperial city."
"Isn't Jing Wang the former useless prince? I remember clearly the palace coup from years ago; my aunt in the capital said it was a river of blood."
"Exactly! Now the emperor is the fourth brother of the prince. If he wins, he'll send the prince off to Shu Region. What kind of place is Shu Region compared to the capital? The current emperor's fate is uncertain; Jing Wang will definitely retaliate."
"The emperor killed many of the crown prince's followers back then. If the crown prince regains power, he will definitely not let the emperor off easily."
"Rui Xi."
Wen Qingyu was stunned upon hearing this, and Chen Yan called her name several times before she came to her senses.
"Are you feeling unwell?" Chen Yan asked with concern, and Wen Qingyu dazedly shook her head. She then lowered her head to continue eating.
Chen Yan glanced at her but couldn't tell what Wen Qingyu was thinking, so he didn't press further.
The two of them ate quietly, but a troublemaker refused to let them be.
A drunkard walked into the inn's lobby, swaying as he surveyed the area, and staggered over to Wen Qingyu.
"Beautiful lady, have a drink with me."
The drunkard's hand inappropriately reached up to touch Wen Qingyu's face.
Wen Qingyu frowned in disgust and was about to shake off his hand when another hand quickly grabbed the drunkard's hand, twisting and pushing it, causing the drunkard to scream like a slaughtered pig.
"What... what are you doing? Is there no law anymore?" The drunkard actually accused first, complaining loudly.
Chen Yan had no words; his expression was darker than ever. He picked up his chopsticks and forcefully stabbed them into the drunkard's palm.
"Get lost." Chen Yan's thin lips curled, his deep voice booming like thunder.
The Drunkard ran away, howling like a ghost.
The onlookers were stunned by this unremarkable man.
However, when this man, filled with rage, turned to the equally shocked woman beside him, he transformed back into an ordinary mountain hunter, his previously displayed aura vanishing completely.
"Rui Xi, are you scared?" Chen Yan smiled, "I'm just a rough man; I might have been a bit too heavy-handed..."
Seeing Chen Yan smile so honestly and steadily, Wen Qingyu felt she had overthought things.
But with a table full of blood, she had no appetite left to eat. The two hurried back to their respective rooms.
The inn's bedding was soft, and the pine wood scent that aided sleep lingered in the air, yet Wen Qingyu tossed and turned, unable to fall asleep.
It wasn't that she was scared by the Drunkard; rather, the news she heard in the hall today stirred her heart.
