Chapter 44: Approaching the Imperial City
Wen Qingyu had spent three days in Zhou Town and finally learned the whereabouts of the person who fell into the water, but that person was not Chasing Wind.
Exhausted, Wen Qingyu had no time to waste and had to head to the Shu Region.
Chen Yan accompanied Wen Qingyu on the journey, citing his "lack of family ties" as the reason.
One day, while resting at a roadside inn, Wen Qingyu looked at Chen Yan, who appeared to be in his thirties yet remained alone, without a wife or children, which piqued his curiosity.
"Brother Chen, have you ever been married?"
Upon hearing this, Chen Yan was taken aback. He raised his eyes to meet Wen Qingyu's gaze, and a pained expression surfaced in his dark eyes. "I have, but I did some things that hurt her in the past, and she left me."
Wen Qingyu did not expect this answer and felt guilty for touching on someone else's wounds. He wanted to change the subject, but Chen Yan gazed at the distant mountains and sunset, reminiscing softly.
"It was my fault; I let her down. But by the time I wanted to make amends, it was already too late." He turned back to look at Wen Qingyu, and the determination in his eyes startled Wen Qingyu. "However, no matter what it costs, I will win her back."
Hearing this made Wen Qingyu's heart ache suddenly. Unsure of how to comfort him, he said, "You're such a good person; your sister-in-law will definitely come back."
Chen Yan looked at Wen Qingyu and smiled. "Yes, she will come back."
After several more days of travel, they finally arrived at the Shu Region.
Jing Wang has led his troops towards the royal city. Aside from heavy guards, the Shu Region is much safer than expected.
After settling in the inn, while Chen Yan went out to gather information, Wen Qingyu eagerly inquired with the innkeeper about Wen Zhao's whereabouts.
She didn't have much hope, but upon hearing Wen Zhao's name, the innkeeper widened his eyes in surprise and asked, "Who are you to him?"
Wen Qingyu hesitated for a moment but answered honestly, "I am his sister."
When Chen Yan returned, he found Wen Qingyu sitting by the window in a daze. He called out to her and handed her a piece of Shu Embroidery, excitedly saying, "This fabric is beautiful; it would be perfect for making an apron for a child."
Wen Qingyu's belly was growing day by day; in three months, she would be giving birth. While traveling, she would buy anything interesting she came across and put it in a large box.
She said to Chen Yan, "When the child grows up, I can tell them about the places their mother has been."
However, this time, Wen Qingyu stared blankly at the Sky Blue embroidery depicting children playing and showed little reaction.
Chen Yan noticed her preoccupation and hesitantly asked, "Is there news about your second brother?"
Wen Qingyu nodded. "The innkeeper told me my second brother is now a capable assistant under Jing Wang. He has already led troops with Jing Wang and is pressing towards the royal city."
Regarding this shocking news, Chen Yan remained calm. "Knowing your second brother is safe should put your mind at ease."
"No. You don't understand how dangerous the royal city is. My second brother's journey is undoubtedly like a wolf entering a tiger's den. I must return to the capital to stop him."
Wen Qingyu was emotionally agitated, and Chen Yan pressed down on her shoulder, leaning in to look at her. "Listen to me, your second brother will definitely be fine. After such a long journey, you can't keep rushing; it's not good for the baby inside you."
"How can you be sure my second brother won't be in trouble?" Wen Qingyu's eyes turned red. "I have to find him. I can't let anything happen to him again."
Wen Qingyu struggled fiercely, suddenly feeling intense fetal movement. She held her belly and squatted down, cold sweat breaking out on her forehead.
Seeing this, Chen Yan quickly bent down and picked her up, carrying her to the bed. He then handed Er Yi a silver ingot, instructing him to find the best doctor in the city.
Throughout the diagnosis process, Wen Qingyu was restless, and Chen Yan held her hand, his complexion not much better than that of a patient.
"Qing'er, you mustn't have any problems," he murmured softly, dark waves swirling in his deep black eyes.
