One late night, the Quan family's home was unusually busy. The lights in the house were all on, illuminating the neatly packed luggage and other necessities. These items were carefully placed near the living room door, awaiting the upcoming long journey.
Shinichi stood at the door, looking at the clock on his phone, then looked up at his mom and dad, saying, "The bus still has some time before it arrives."
Mom: Looking at all the luggage, sighed and said, "This is the first time we've traveled for such a long time. It was impossible when we lived in the downtown apartment."
Izumi Kazuyuki, also known as Shinichi's dad, said with a hint of fatigue and nostalgia, "Yes, those days were quite tough for me too."
Mom suddenly looked down at her Right hand, where there was a scar from a burn. She said with a serious tone, "Yes, this burn was also from that difficult period."
Shinichi noticed the burn scar on his mom's hand, and his heart tightened as his gaze slightly faltered.
Mom caught the slight change on Shinichi's face and gave him a comforting smile, gently saying, "Hey, it's okay, don't overthink it."
A few years ago, a day from the past played in Izumi Shinichi's mind like an old movie. At that time, Shinichi, a first-year junior high school student, excitedly ran into the house and shouted, "Mom, I need a silver plate for tomorrow's science experiment!"
Mom is frying tempura in the kitchen and when she hears this, she responds, "Shinichi, sorry, we don't have a silver plate at home."
"A silver plate? Shouldn't it be an aluminum plate?" Mom asks while flipping the tempura.
"Yes, it's aluminum, I got it wrong." Shinichi quickly corrected.
"The aluminum plate is on the upper shelf of that tall cabinet. My hands are oily, I'll give it to you later." Mom replied while frying food.
However, little Shinichi seemed impatient. He found a stool to stand on, trying to climb up and reach for the aluminum tray by himself. Just as he grabbed the tray, the stool suddenly lost balance, and he fell down.
"Ouch..." Little Shinichi held his head, lying on the kitchen floor.
"What are you doing?" Mom exclaimed, instantly seeing the tempura pot about to fall and hit Shinichi's head. Without hesitation, she reached out and caught the scorching hot pot, swiftly tossing it aside.
Forgot about the pain in his hand, Mom anxiously asked, "Shinichi, are you okay? Did you get scalded by hot oil?"
Little Shinichi looked at his mom, too scared to speak.
"Did you tell Mom if you got burned anywhere?" Mom anxiously asked.
Just then, Dad Izumi Kazuyuki rushed in and, seeing the scene, exclaimed, "Nobuko, what happened to your hand?"
"Ah, it's really hot..." Mom suddenly realized that her hand was severely burned, and quickly ran to the sink to rinse it with cold water.
Dad walked up to little Shinichi and lightly tapped his head with his fist.
"It hurts, Dad, what are you doing?" Little Shinichi looked at his father in pain.
Dad replied seriously, "Mom is in more pain than you."
This memory caused a pang in Shinichi's heart, and then he suddenly snapped back to reality. He looked once again at the burn mark on his mother's hand, filled with deep emotion and guilt.
"Oh! Look, the bus is here. Nobuko, let's go. Shinichi, I'm leaving everything to you!" Dad said excitedly as he pulled the packed suitcase.
"Remember to turn off the gas and close the doors and windows, and don't stay up too late," Mom Izumi Shikibu adjusted her hat, smiling, and reminded Shinichi.
"Okay, don't worry." Shinichi nodded and showed a slight smile on his face.
"Then we're off, Shinichi, goodbye!" His mother stood outside the door, waving to Shinichi with a look of reluctance on her face.
"Don't worry too much about us, take care of yourselves." Dad also pulled the suitcase, smiled at Shinichi, and followed Mom out.
"Take care, goodbye!" Shinichi stood at the door and responded, watching Dad and Mom's receding figures.
Afterwards, the door slowly closed, and a deep silence enveloped the entire house. This kind of silence was chilling, as if it conveyed an indescribable sense of eeriness.
All the sounds in the house seemed to have been sucked away, leaving only Shinichi and his inner uneasiness, along with the sound of time ticking away.
He stood there, gazing at the door, unable to calm down for a moment. This silence made Shinichi feel an unprecedented panic.
"Ugh, I'm already late on my first day living alone. This is just terrible," Shinichi muttered as he hurriedly brushed his teeth and put on his school uniform. He quickly ate a few bites of breakfast, grabbed his bag, and rushed downstairs.
"You didn't need to sleep, so why didn't you wake me up on time?" Shinichi looked slightly annoyed at Right, his right hand, and said.
"Ah, the social customs of humanity are truly difficult to understand," it responded with a disdainful tone as it gently opened its eyes.
"The body needs rest and sleep in order to regain energy, isn't that a good thing?" it seemed to be justifying to itself.
Shinichi had already reached the door and was about to open it to leave. "Moreover, your health directly affects me. Your health is my health, so how could I let anything happen to you?" Right continued speaking.
"Oh, I see. But next time, you still have to wake me up on time, got it!" Shinichi said to Right, then quickly opened the door, walked out, and closed the door behind him.
"Ah, the second class has already started, so let's walk over slowly," Shinichi said as he walked.
"Right, you're still not asleep? I have something I want to ask you," Shinichi couldn't help but ask.
"Hmm? What's up? I'm actually feeling a bit sleepy." Right I responded with a yawn.
"Before we left, my mom said I've changed a lot, but I don't feel it at all. Where exactly have I changed?" Shinichi asked with a slightly heavy tone.
"I'm not very clear either, but since Rimi mentioned fusion, I've been very curious. Lately, I've also found myself liking to sleep more and more." Right seems a bit confused.
"What does fusion mean?" Shinichi asked.
"I am closely connected to your body, from nerves to bodily fluids, and even to the brain. Perhaps because of this, your behavior and thoughts have changed." Right Please explain in detail.
"And then? What other effects are there?" Shinichi asked curiously.
"Maybe that's why Tamiya Ryoko feels a non-human aura from you." Right seemed to have found a reasonable explanation.
"A non-human aura? Besides Right, I'm just a regular person!" Shinichi asked uneasily.
"I can't be sure about this. But even if your neural structure has changed, it's not that big of a deal, right?" Right seems to be indifferent to all of this.
"What do you mean by that?" Shinichi's face changed, becoming very tense.
Right Without responding further, it seemed to have fallen back into slumber.
"Hey, wake up! What did you mean by what you just said? Explain clearly!" Shinichi seemed a bit impatient.
"Don't say such strange things anymore. I won't turn into a cannibal!" Shinichi walked while holding his head, filled with confusion and unease.
Shinichi continued on his way to school. Suddenly, his ears caught the noise and impact coming from not far away.
He arrived near an abandoned hut, hidden behind the trees, and saw a scene that surprised him: his classmate Nagai was being viciously beaten by three men. Standing next to them was a woman, her eyes filled with disdain and indifference.
Shinichi clenched his fist, bit his lip, and then walked out in big strides. "Hey, what's going on?" Shinichi tried to intervene with a calm tone.
One of the men, a burly guy, glanced at Shinichi and smiled, "This has nothing to do with you, mind your own business."
Shinichi's heart rate accelerated, and his palms began to sweat slightly. He glanced at "Right," his right hand, as if seeking support or approval. But he quickly dismissed the thought, thinking to himself, "No, this time I have to rely on myself."
He took a deep breath, stood up, and addressed the crowd, saying, "This is not right. I cannot stand by and do nothing."
The burly man sneered and suddenly threw a punch at Shinichi. Shinichi quickly reacted and dodged the punch, but he didn't anticipate that another man had already approached from the side and delivered a fierce punch to him.
"Hmph, what a poor wretch!" the burly man taunted.
Shinichi tightly held onto his face that had been struck, feeling a burning pain spreading through his body. Despite this, he showed no sign of backing down, instead standing firmly in place, staring at the man in front of him.
Just as the man clenched his fist, preparing to strike Shinichi again, a voice abruptly shattered the suffocating tension.
The woman suddenly stood up and scolded, "Stop it!"
The man glared at her and said displeased, "Kaji, mind your own business! This guy who only knows how to talk big makes me even more angry!" Then he forcefully pushed Shinichi to the ground and stepped on his Right hand.
Shinichi thought to himself, "It's done. I forgot to tell Right in advance not to act."
At that moment, the woman's voice became even louder, almost shouting, "I told you to stop, are you deaf?!"
The man was momentarily stunned and had to retract his hand.
"Being so overbearing towards the weak, really lacking in manners," the woman looked disdainfully at the man, then turned to Shinichi and said, "You're not very smart either, daring to play the hero when you're so weak."
However, when her gaze met Shinichi's, she seemed to see an endless sea of stars in his eyes. Just as she was immersed in this wonderful feeling, suddenly, a pair of fierce eyes opened on Shinichi's face.
"What are you looking at?" the eyes asked coldly.
She took a step back in fright and asked, "Wow, what exactly are you...?"
"Kanae, let's go!" the man called out urgently.
Kanae almost ran to the side of the man, but before leaving, she glanced back at Shinichi.
Shinichi watched their retreating figures, then walked over to Nagai and asked with concern, "Are you okay, Nagai?"
Nagai Looked at Shinichi somewhat helplessly and said, "Why are you so silly?"
Shinichi smiled and replied, "Because I am human, that's what sets us apart from animals." There was an indescribable but unwavering conviction in his voice.
Nagai Although a little confused and not quite understanding, they didn't say much and walked to school together.
