Amy is sitting in front of the window in her room, holding a pink ballpoint pen and scribbling on the notebook beside her.
Her room is decorated in soft pink and white, filled with girlish decorations and accessories.
Behind the window is that unusual big tree, with many branches, twisted and intertwined, now securely sealed with a chain and a big lock.
Sitting by the window, Amy is feeling nothing like the bright atmosphere of the room.
She constantly thinks of Jis, the puppet boy with golden hair and blue eyes. Although her father Jack had firmly locked the door to that world, the image of Jis remained haunting.
Nick suddenly knocked on the door a few times, then opened it.
"Amy, mom says dinner is almost ready, come down quickly."
Amy came to her senses, put down her gel pen, and glanced at her younger brother. "Okay, I'll come down right away."
The atmosphere at dinner was somewhat heavy, as if it not only lingered in the air, but also affected the taste of every dish. The family sat around the table, where not only grilled chicken, salad, and freshly baked bread were presented, but also a kind of tension and unease that could not be ignored.
Jack focused on cutting a piece of chicken with his knife and fork, putting it into his mouth, savoring the delicious yet slightly bitter dinner. At the same time, Laura looked at her children and noticed that their gaze was not on the table, but wandering in their own thoughts.
"What's wrong, are you both unhappy?" Laura tried to break the silence with a calm tone.
Nick spoke first, "It's nothing, mom. Just feeling a bit bored." His expression revealed a reluctance to discuss, as if trying to conceal his unexplained concern.
Amy didn't have Nick's patience. She poked at the salad on her plate with her fork, hesitating to speak. Finally, she took a slow bite of vegetables, took a deep breath, and said, "I just thought of something that's been bothering me."
Jack set down his knife and fork, gazing deeply at Amy with a look of anticipation and puzzlement. "If something is troubling you, it's best to speak up. After all, isn't that what family is for? To solve problems?"
Amy hesitated for a moment, her mouth slightly upturned, revealing a bitter smile. "Actually, I've been thinking, is that puppet world really as scary as it seems? I know Dad locked that door for our safety, but I still feel like there are some differences there worth exploring."
Jack was slightly taken aback, clearly not expecting Amy to say that. He gazed at her and then asked, "You're right, but that place is not safe, we can't take the risk."
"However, I feel that the Jis there is different. He's not as hollow and terrifying as the other puppets. Amy's eyes flashed with a hint of determination, as if defending Jis.
Laura's eyebrows furrowed slightly. "Jis? Are you referring to that boy from the puppet world? Amy, I understand that you might find that place interesting, but it's not somewhere we should be going."
"Why?" Nick suddenly interjected, "Why can't we go there? Is there some secret that everyone doesn't know about?"
"No secrets," Jack said firmly, "It's just that place is too eerie. We can't let curiosity put the whole family in danger."
"However," Amy spoke again, "if we don't go to understand, then how do we know it's really dangerous? Maybe those puppets just need to be understood and helped."
"Understood and helped?" Jack's mouth curled slightly, but his eyes revealed seriousness. "Sometimes, curiosity comes with a heavy price. Do you still remember Margaret's situation?"
"Margaret?" Amy bit her lip, feeling even more nervous. "How did you know about Margaret?"
Jack decided to be honest. "I had a conversation with Alan once. He mentioned some strange things about this town, including Margaret. I did some research and found that Margaret's puppet creations may be related to all of this. This is not a place for children to explore. There is too much uncertainty and danger here."
Amy lowered her head, feeling heavy-hearted. "But Jis is different. He's the only one in that world who makes me feel... a bit human, like a puppet."
Laura walked over to Amy and gently embraced her. "Amy, even if he makes you feel that way, it doesn't change the danger lurking in that place," Laura's voice was gentle but firm.
"Is it possible that we can change that place, instead of being changed by it?" Amy suddenly made a surprising statement.
Jack looked at Amy and Nick, their eyes filled with unwillingness and resistance. Jack felt a wave of complexity in his heart, "I can't let you take the risk, but I will find a way to solve all this, even if it means finding whatever Margaret left behind."
"What if we could find that thing?" Amy's eyes lit up with a glimmer of hope.
Jack sighed, "If... if you could find that key thing, maybe we would have a chance. But before that, I need you to promise me, don't go to that place again."
The two children nodded silently, despite feeling countless reluctance in their hearts.
That night, Amy tossed and turned in bed, unable to fall asleep. Eventually, she got up, put on a thick sweater and a pair of sneakers, quietly walked down the stairs, and arrived at the locked door.
She carefully examined the chain and the lock. It was a quite large lock, but Amy discovered a small hole next to the lock.
She suddenly thought of something, was startled, and immediately bit her lip tightly.
Amy thought for a moment, then decided to take a risk. She returned to her room, found a long hairpin, and walked back to the door.
After a careful operation, she felt the lock slightly move, and finally heard a "click," as the lock slowly opened.
"Success..." Amy secretly celebrated in her heart, while also feeling a mix of fear and excitement.
She pushed open the door, and a chilling gust of wind came from behind it, causing Amy to shiver involuntarily. She took a deep breath and silently told herself that she must uncover the truth behind all of this.
As she entered, darkness enveloped her, with only a faint light from the puppet world guiding her.
She crossed the threshold and entered this mysterious world.
This time, she didn't see her parents, only a wide stage in front of her.
The lights suddenly came on, and a giant puppet appeared on the stage, nearly two meters tall, completely wrapped in black fabric. When Amy saw it, she felt a sense of unease.
The puppet on the stage spoke with a deep and chilling voice: "Amy, why have you come here?"
"I want to know more," Amy replied, despite the growing fear in her heart, she still looked firmly at the giant puppet.
"Know more? Haha, then you've come to the right place," the voice of the big puppet became even more sinister.
Suddenly, the curtain at the back of the stage opened, revealing a row of puppets making various expressions and poses. Then, a eerie music started playing, and all the puppets began a chilling dance.
Amy couldn't help but take a step back, realizing that this world was far more dangerous and eerie than she had imagined.
Just as she was about to leave the door and return to the real world, she found that the door behind her had disappeared.
Just as she panicked, she suddenly heard a familiar voice.
"Amy, come over here."
She turned around and saw Jis.
"How did you end up here?" Amy asked in surprise.
"I've always been here," Jis said sadly. "This world is my home, but that doesn't mean I'm as evil as they are."
"What should I do now?"
Jis stared intently at the huge puppet, with a hint of barely noticeable tension in their gaze.
"Follow me, now Puppet Mother is fast asleep, speak softly. I can help you safely return to your world. But you must promise me one thing—never come back."
Amy hesitated for a moment, her gaze shifting between Jis's blue eyes and the huge big puppet face.
Jis's eyes revealed an indescribable sadness, evoking sympathy in her heart. In the end, she bit her lip and nodded.
"I promise you, Jis."
Jis seemed to breathe a sigh of relief as he led Amy around the stage covered with old red carpet, to a secluded corner.
It was so dark here that it seemed to swallow everything, the edge of this strange world. Faint purple light shimmered on the boundary, as if it were a broken mirror separating two worlds.
"This is the boundary of puppet world. Just tear open here, and you can return to your own world," Jis said, as a dazzling purple light ball appeared in his hand, with which he gently touched the boundary.
The seam opened with a sound, as if tearing through a layer of purple gauze. Amy's heart raced, and she gently held Jis's hand, asking, "What will you do?"
"Don't worry about me, you go." Jis's voice was hoarse but firm.
Amy, with tears in her eyes, began to pass through the crack in that space. In an instant, she felt a dizzy spell, and the surrounding space seemed to twist as if being pulled, and then everything turned dark.
When she woke up, she found herself back home, breathing air filled with a hint of vitality. She hurried to the mysterious door and discovered it had been locked again, as if it had never been opened.
Amy let out a long sigh, leaning against the door, silently vowing never to step into that eerie, dangerous world again.
But soon, his face appeared in her mind again, those blue eyes as deep as a lake. Would he be punished by the terrible Puppet Mother for letting her go? Thinking of this, she began to feel uneasy.
At this moment, the door of the living room suddenly opened, and it was her brother Nick.
"Amy, where are you? Mom is looking for you," Nick said with a puzzled look.
"I... I was just taking a walk outside, it's nothing," Amy forced a smile, temporarily interrupting the heavy burden on her heart.
"Okay, let's go. Mom made dinner, and she made your favorite roasted chicken today."
"Okay, I'll go now."
