"Call her back now!" A voice suddenly echoed in Liu Xuan's mind. It was Nars.
"What's wrong?" Liu Xuan glanced warily towards Lu Sha.
" Soulless is nearby! Hurry!" Nars had never sounded so anxious, as if he were gripping Liu Xuan's heart to make him act.
"Ah!" Liu Xuan exclaimed, placing his hands over his mouth as he ran, shouting, "Lu Sha? Lu Sha!"
At that moment, Lu Sha finally turned around.
The Soulless Zombie before her looked like it had spotted prey, its pale eyes seeming ready to fall out at any moment. Lu Sha saw its razor-sharp teeth and the dirt-gray skin infested with maggots; the stench wafting towards her made her lose all desire to fight. She took a few steps back and hurriedly ran towards the direction where Liu Xuan was calling.
She thought this creature wouldn't be able to run, but to her surprise, the monster swiftly closed the distance, keeping right on her heels. It was important to note that Lu Sha was a modified human; the Viper Organization had aimed to turn her into a killing machine, and in terms of explosive power and endurance, she was definitely not someone an ordinary person could match.
Yet this creature, clearly a walking corpse, was somehow keeping up with her? This was absurd!
"Roar—"
Lu Sha turned her head to see the zombie leaping high into the air. This wasn't just a zombie; it was like a ferocious beast!
For an ordinary person locked onto by such a creature, it would likely mean certain death. However, Lu Sha was a woman who had fought against the most terrifying monsters in the past. She didn't panic; realizing she couldn't evade it any longer, Lu Sha unlocked her Chain Spear in an instant but didn't fire it. Instead, she gripped the Chain Spear tightly in her hand and switched it to hook mode in one swift motion, driving it forcefully into the zombie's cheekbone just as it was about to land.
Everything happened too quickly; as soon as the zombie lunged, Lu Sha sent it flying away. She thought she had dealt with the monster and moved closer to confirm its status, but unexpectedly, the zombie got back up again. Its face was deformed from the impact, and its twisted appearance was even more terrifying. The row of sharp teeth on its left side had been shattered, leaving a large hole that led deep into its mouth.
Lu Sha gasped; before the zombie could pounce again, she quickly shot out another Chain Spear that pierced through its chest and pinned it against a tree. However, Lu Sha then found herself at a loss—if she pulled it back, it would likely bite her again; if she left it there, she couldn't move either.
"Liu Xuan, I'm here!" Lu Sha suddenly remembered she hadn't responded to Liu Xuan and shouted urgently.
She turned her head towards the woods, searching for their whereabouts when suddenly she caught a whiff of rotting flesh. She turned around…
The zombie was actually allowing itself to be impaled by the Chain Spear and was crawling along it towards Lu Sha with its mouth wide open!
"Ah—" Lu Sha screamed instinctively raising her arms to block its mouth.
The zombie sank its sharp teeth into Lu Sha's flesh!
"Ugh!" Lu Sha tilted her head back in pain as she endured the immense biting force; she flailed her arms wildly trying to make the zombie let go, but all she felt were her bones grinding together louder and louder.
"My arm! Ah—" With a powerful kick, Lu Sha struck the zombie in the stomach, sending it flying along the chain. A wave of tearing pain exploded in her arm as she looked down to see her bloodied arm with bone partially visible—she had just been torn apart alive!
Lu Sha crouched down in agony, clutching her wound; fortunately, she had rapid healing abilities. The flesh on her arm began to grow back little by little as she retracted her Chain Spear; however, the zombie lay on the ground and was about to get up again.
"Can't I kill you?" Lu Sha was completely enraged—how dare you tear my flesh? I'll take you apart!
"Whoosh!"
Lu Sha suddenly looked up and saw something with a purple tail streaking past her head. She heard a sound like flesh being sliced, and the zombie's head was severed by that object, rolling to the ground. Its body finally collapsed.
"What was that?" Lu Sha muttered to herself, noticing that the head had stopped moving, while a black-purple disc still smoldered deeply embedded in the tree trunk.
"Are you okay?"
Lu Sha turned around, her cherry-red hair covering one eye, and she could only see a hand reaching out to her through the gap.
Nars arrived with the security team. He held a gun in one hand and extended the other to help Lu Sha up.
"Uh, thank you, Liu Xuan..." Lu Sha took his hand, and Nars pulled her up. She looked into his eyes, feeling a bit awkward. "Ah, no, Nars? Well, who are you?"
"That's not the point," Nars said, revealing a hint of silver teeth as he shook his head lightly and walked toward the lifeless corpse.
"Hey..." Lu Sha felt an indescribable sensation. She felt as if she were less than a corpse in the eyes of these two souls—since they came to rescue her, couldn't they at least ask about her injuries?
However, she didn't want Liu Xuan and Nars to see her like this; still, Lu Sha felt somewhat neglected.
"Screw this vanity," Lu Sha thought, slightly loosening her right hand that was covering her wound. The flesh had healed completely; if it weren't for the bloodstains on the ground, there would be no evidence that a piece of her flesh had been torn off just moments ago.
"Are you sure you don't care about her?" Liu Xuan asked Nars in his mind.
"She's fine; don't worry," Nars replied as he set down the cutting launcher and activated the scanning device in front of him, lifting the severed head to scan it as if he were locking eyes with it.
Lu Sha certainly couldn't bear to look at it; just the smell alone was unbearable for her.
Suddenly, the security team members behind them heard something and looked up. A familiar whistling sound grew closer as An Xiaotian landed beside Lu Sha in his Fierce Eagle Armor.
"General Jiang said there was danger here; we rushed over," An Xiaotian said as he unlocked his helmet and glanced at the still-damp blood on the ground. He asked her, "Where are you hurt? Why didn't that guy take care of you?"
It was clear that An Xiaotian was quite displeased with Nars's "willful ignorance."
"Captain, I'm fine. I have strong self-healing abilities; ordinary injuries don't affect me much," Lu Sha said with a relieved smile—Brother Xiaotian is the best.
Jiao An rushed over with the security team. Seeing that Lu Sha was unharmed, Jiao An finally relaxed her furrowed brow.
" Sister Jiao An!" Lu Sha ran up and vigorously patted Jiao An's arm. "Do you know how dangerous it was just now? If it had bitten my neck, even my superpowers wouldn't have saved me..."
As she rambled on, Nars turned back and asked, "Is everyone here? That's great. I have something to say."
The security team surrounded the four of them and went on high alert. The three gathered around Nars involuntarily frowned—it was simply too foul-smelling.
"I don't know how to explain this to you all; simply put, someone has acquired the ability of Reanimated Corpses and has programmed them with an extremely brutal personality. This is eerily similar to the beginning of that riot in our history."
An Xiaotian looked at the corpse and asked, "What do we do now?"
"First, we need to understand why all the bodies here have disappeared, except for this one. Logically, the person who resurrected them should have taken all the Soulless away. Secondly, who is the person that brought them back? Someone with such power shouldn't be here. Also, if this one has appeared, could there be another hidden one, or perhaps they were never taken away and are still nearby?"
The other three listened quietly, unsure how to respond to Nars. This case was bizarre beyond belief.
Nars set down the head, letting out a slow sigh through his nostrils, and said, "What a beast; it doesn't even spare the dead, not allowing them to rest."
"I think the most likely possibility is that they haven't left the area," An Xiaotian stepped forward and took out an eyeball from his waist, placing it into the zombie's eye socket.
"Oh my..." Jiao An covered her mouth. Now she understood why An Xiaotian didn't want her to see it; if it were Jiao An, she wouldn't want An Xiaotian to see her picking up an eyeball either.
Nars appeared calm; he knew what An Xiaotian was trying to confirm.
"Can I take a look?" Nars asked him. An Xiaotian nodded and handed the eyeball to Nars.
An Xiaotian thought he might need some time to observe it, so he turned towards the murky river water. However, just as he took a step forward, Nars grabbed him.
"This can't belong to this Soulless," Nars pointed at the blood vessels and some tissue that clearly did not belong to the eyeball: "It's normal for a dead person's eyeball to fall out, and there shouldn't be any blood vessels. But this eyeball was obviously pried out forcefully."
"Hiss—" Lu Sha gasped behind them.
"That's so cruel," An Xiaotian lowered his head, pouting slightly before turning his gaze back towards the river—clearly curious about its condition as well.
There were too many doubts. Everyone felt overwhelmed; all they knew was that the Caretaker had no hope of survival and that whoever killed him was extremely brutal.
While Jiao An was pondering this, her communicator suddenly vibrated by her ear. Jiao An pressed the switch: "Hello, General Jiang?"
"I relayed your questions to Mayor Tan," General Jiang paused for a moment, "He said that those officers did not come back a second time; he can testify to that. However, there is one thing that Mayor Tan finds quite puzzling."
"What is it?"
"The reason the officers didn't take the documents from the bushes wasn't because they didn't see them; rather—according to their own account—they were working when suddenly they heard roaring sounds coming from deep in the mountains behind them, echoing from the north. They feared it was some wild beast and didn’t have any defensive weapons on them. With experts needing protection nearby, they quickly evacuated the scene. Before leaving, they abandoned the thought of taking their work IDs."
"What kind of sound could be so terrifying that they didn't even have time to bend down and pick them up?" Jiao An was confused.
"I can't say for sure," General Jiang replied.
Jiao An switched to speaker mode; everyone looked at her as General Jiang hung up.
"What do you think, Captain?" Nars asked An Xiaotian.
After a moment of contemplation, An Xiaotian finally said: "Expand the search area immediately!"
