In his previous life, Jiang Yizhou's father, as a migrant worker, left the biggest impression on him by never receiving his wages. Every semester when school started, he had to borrow money from everywhere to gather the tuition fees. Although his father's earnings were considerable, he just couldn't get paid.
This situation was quite distasteful for Jiang Yizhou. During the summer of his senior year, when he went to the construction site for work experience, it was his father who had advanced him the wages. It wasn't that he disliked labor that earned rewards, but in this line of work, wage arrears were the norm.
If a construction team could delay wages for a year and a half, even putting that money in the bank would yield a decent interest. Not to mention, there were plenty of ways for developers to make money.
Jiang Yizhou did not want to be held back by such issues.
"..." What else could Jiang Maode say?
He carried a bamboo basket and didn't intend to lecture as an elder. "Think it over carefully and come find me when you're ready."
Then he walked toward a nearby vegetable market. After walking a few dozen meters, he turned back to glance at Jiang Yizhou, sighed deeply, and continued on his way.
Jiang Maode began to recall his late wife. Once someone has set their mind on something, no matter how much you try to dissuade them—even if you kneel down and beg—they won't turn back without trying to hit a wall first. Especially since she had hooked up with a wealthy man and was living a "good life"!
As for Jiang Yizhou, in his eyes, it was the same situation. This child was honest but also strong-willed; he simply didn't know what he wanted back in their hometown, so he rarely resisted his parents' arrangements.
Now, sigh~~
"Hey! Old man, are you trying to get yourself killed? Can't you look out for cars when crossing the street? Ugh!"
A car that had to swerve sharply because Jiang Maode was lost in thought came to a stop. A man in a formal suit rolled down the window and yelled at him before peering at his own vehicle and cursing as he started the car again and drove off.
...
After being scolded (as he thought), and unable to think of what else he could do—being someone with high aspirations but low abilities—he felt stuck. If it weren't for his strong physique, he might have needed a long time just to adapt to doing something like moving bricks.
With little motivation to continue wandering around, Jiang Yizhou shook his head and walked down the street.
"Excuse me, sir, could you tell me if there's anywhere that sells stationery?" Although Jiang Yizhou was not good at socializing in his previous life, combined with this body's simplicity, he asked without any embarrassment.
The person he approached was a rather refined middle-aged man. Being an educated person, he should know about such places! This was also why Jiang Yizhou chose him; he hoped for a direct answer without needing to ask anyone else again. Unfortunately, he didn't see anyone dressed like a student.
The man was somewhat annoyed when he was suddenly grabbed by an unfamiliar stranger. Turning around, he was about to shake off Jiang Yizhou's dirty hand that had unexpectedly caught his.
Seeing Jiang Yizhou's rather innocent expression, his anger subsided considerably. He pointed to a large grocery store at the street corner, which could also be called a supermarket. "Look, there's a store over there that sells all kinds of things, including stationery."
Jiang Yizhou expressed his sincere gratitude, "Thank you, big brother!"
His earnest words, tinged with a Central Plains dialect, made him come across as a naive young man who had just arrived in the big city. Watching the refined man leave, Jiang Yizhou felt a bit incredulous about himself.
He found a shop window that wasn't very crowded and stood in the sunlight, observing his reflection in the mirror. It truly showed his naivety written all over his face.
He rubbed his facial muscles vigorously and made silly faces at the shop window repeatedly. He wasn't really a naive guy; although he was introverted, he had a rather quirky temper. At most, he could be considered straightforward, which had nothing to do with being naive.
"Wow!"
After making another big silly face at the glass, Jiang Yizhou regained some confidence. This was more like him! Being naive might fool some people, but what good was it? It was better to be direct!
Suddenly, a fluffy object came rushing towards him. Jiang Yizhou, whose face was almost pressed against the glass, was startled and exclaimed, "Ah!"
He jumped back, and the frosty ground in winter was somewhat slippery. With a thud, Jiang Yizhou fell hard onto the ground, struggling to support himself with both arms.
Once he stabilized himself, Jiang Yizhou looked closely at the shop window and realized it was just a feather duster. He had been so engrossed in making silly faces that this sudden object had startled him.
Then a woman wearing sleeves and a headscarf came out from inside. Using the feather duster, she scolded Jiang Yizhou, "Hey! Are you trying to die? Is making silly faces in front of my store fun? If you're not going to buy anything, don't lean against it!"
Seeing that Jiang Yizhou didn't respond, the woman adjusted her feather duster and huffed a few times before going back inside and closing the door.
Listening to the buzzing discussions around him, Jiang Yizhou felt embarrassed. "The lights aren't even on; I thought no one was here! Hmph!"
He didn't even notice the mud stains on his backside as he muttered angrily and headed toward the large grocery store that the refined man had mentioned.
"Didn’t expect there were still people in this store! I thought it was closed?"
"Maybe someone took over and plans to open a new store? I haven't seen that girl before."
...
"Don't rush! One at a time," Li Xiaoyun saw more new customers arriving, took a moment to shout, "Welcome!" and then got back to checking out the customers crowded at the counter.
This really is a Grocery Store! Just looking at the management makes it clear. Jiang Yizhou still thinks it's more appropriate to call it a Grocery Store; the management inside is quite messy. Although there are enough types of products, it still doesn't meet the threshold of a supermarket.
The simple product placement could use some guiding signs to tell customers where each type of product is located. Jiang Yizhou searched for a long time but couldn't find the stationery he wanted. He wanted to ask the owner, but she was still surrounded by customers.
"Hey, brother, can I ask where the stationery is?" Jiang Yizhou noticed another kid wandering around the Grocery Store. However, he wasn't picking anything; instead, he was watching others choose products. He must be staff too!
The boy pointed to a corner inside, and sure enough, there were a few pieces of stationery displayed there. Jiang Yizhou walked over, picked out a few pens and some ink, along with two notebooks, and then headed to the counter, waiting behind the ladies who were scrambling to check out.
After a while, the ladies finally finished and left. Jiang Yizhou placed his items on the table for the woman to check out and curiously asked, "Boss lady, what's going on here? Why is it so messy?"
