"Really?" Gao Qingzhen understood her son's personality well; his honest nature made it impossible for him to lie. What intrigued her was what kind of business could capture her son’s attention and make money.
"Really, more real than pearls!" Jiang Yizhou increasingly felt how lacking his language skills were as a guy who only knew how to code and make a living online.
Especially since he had come to this era, aside from his vision and future information, he basically had only this healthy body, which hadn’t been worn out by years of labor, and could at least live to eighty or ninety years old, assuming nothing unexpected happened.
"Sounds good," but suddenly his mother changed her tone, "But no way! What if you lose money? I’ve already planned it out; after you work for two years, we’ll build a house, then find someone for you to marry. I want to hold my grandchild soon!"
His mother, a rural woman with limited experience, would eventually understand that in ten or twenty years, it wouldn’t matter whether it was a daughter or a son who was closer to her; it would be who could support her and her husband in their old age!
Especially if Jiang Yizhou hadn’t come along, the possibility of him marrying someone who would take advantage of his honest nature would be quite high. The chance of encountering a dutiful and hardworking daughter-in-law was still considerable.
Jiang Yizhou's mind wandered far away, but this honest nature wouldn’t serve as a mediator in conflicts between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law; instead, it would add fuel to the fire. Compromising on both sides would only lead to dissatisfaction.
It seemed that his words really lacked persuasive power.
The conversation ended without resolution. No matter what he said, Jiang Yizhou couldn’t convince his mother. In the end, he had to change the subject. "Forget about that, Mom. I heard you don’t want Er Ya to go to high school!"
"What? What’s the use of high school? It costs so much money with no benefits! Why are you suddenly asking about this?"
What else could Jiang Yizhou say? Ultimately, it all came down to money; his mother wouldn’t agree to any of it.
After putting down his bowl, with his mother rushing to clear the dishes, Jiang Yizhou sat on the bench, idly gazing at the scenery outside the house. In fact, getting money was quite easy; all the money he earned from working over the years was in a separate savings book registered under his name. The savings book and password were with his mother.
The password was most likely their birthdays; if not, he could just take his ID and the savings book to the credit union in town and change the password easily.
However, doing so would definitely anger his mother and lead to a cold war. He might end up being labeled as a prodigal son or a worthless kid in conversations between his mother and other rural women. When they started cursing, she might not even care that he was her son.
Sigh~~
What should he do?
Jiang Xiaoya returned to her desk feeling downcast, absentmindedly doing her homework. Even though her older brother supported her continuing her education, it was ultimately their mother who had control; she needed their mother's approval to proceed smoothly.
But the conversation at the dinner table earlier, with his mother dismissively refusing, made her feel that hope was slim. Unless his older brother truly intended to support her wholeheartedly, she would have no choice but to give up!
...
"Maoqiang, why are you back again?" A few members of the construction team who had already started working saw Jiang Maoqiang returning and one of them asked.
Jiang Maoqiang forced a smile, "It's nothing much. The kid's mother and the child had a conflict at home, so I came out for some peace and quiet!"
"I knew it! Yi Zhou coming back this early must mean something's up! What is it?" A lean, dark-skinned villager smirked, feeling proud of his guess, then turned to Jiang Maoqiang.
Jiang Maoqiang waved his hand and sighed, "What else could it be? Gao Qingzhen has always been very fond of the eldest. They argued because of money! I don't know what the eldest saw outside; he insists on doing business and wants to ask for money from home. With Gao Qingzhen's temperament, how could she possibly give him money? Sigh~~ It's really a headache!"
"In my opinion, it's better to work honestly and earn money. People only see the profits from doing business outside but not the losses. It's not uncommon for someone to lose their entire savings in one night. This kid is getting too wild..." Another tall farmer put down his bricks and tools, sitting down on the ground with a sigh.
"That's hard to manage! The eldest is already nineteen, eighteen by the lunar calendar, with two good legs. How can I control him? Sigh!" Jiang Maoqiang had a soft temperament; in the past, the child's mother would manage things. Now that the eldest was arguing with Gao Qingzhen, he preferred to come out and avoid worrying about it.
...
After lunch, Jiang Yizhou went out briefly with his sister before circling around and leaving the village from behind the house.
Large fields were divided into several big sections by dirt roads. The dirt roads were not muddy due to the sunny days but walking raised quite a bit of dust that was irritating. He followed the road to where the trees met the river at the back and quietly sat on the riverbank, watching the still somewhat turbulent water flow.
He couldn't recall ever knowing this river's name; it had always been referred to as "the river behind the village." Due to its swift current, not many people played by the riverbank; one careless moment could lead to being swept away.
Feelings of helplessness were always present—when drowning in turbulent waters, when suffering from a serious illness but lacking money, when facing family members who couldn't accept his thoughts, and when confronting death—no matter how much one possessed, it couldn't prolong life.
It seemed that after crossing over, he had become ten years younger. Moreover, this body would likely have a much longer lifespan than his previous overweight and unhealthy body!
He truly felt fortunate. Jiang Yizhou comforted himself that even if he felt powerless now, at least he could live an extra ten years or so; that was a significant benefit.
"Ah~~~" He stood up from the riverbank and shouted loudly at the wide river, venting his inner helplessness. Success was never that easy!
Except for a few lucky individuals, every bit of success has its reasons. It's not as simple as writing a book and immediately achieving fame and fortune; even the original author might not be able to do that, although they certainly have the ability.
At the dinner table, after his mother straightforwardly rejected his idea, no matter how he explained, she wouldn't listen at all, and he could only give up on persuading her.
Perhaps from the outcome, he was right because he knew the future, but what about the process?
In his mother's eyes, he wasn't cut out for it and would definitely suffer great losses. What if he ruined a life that, while not wealthy, was still stable and healthy?
As long as he listened to his mother, even the money he earned from working would be untouched!
Was he obedient?
Jiang Yizhou was quite conflicted. Although it was his current self in charge, he couldn't avoid being influenced by his past self.
"Bang~~"
Jiang Yizhou picked up a fist-sized stone and threw it into the river, creating a splash. He would make it up to her later!
