At this point, Jiang Yizhou couldn't help but sigh inwardly. In his previous life as a Computer major, he had never obtained any certifications, except for the English Level 4 and Level 6 certificates. When he arrived in this era, he had indeed looked for jobs that matched his qualifications.
After reviewing the knowledge he had learned and gaining an understanding of the required standards for this era, Jiang Yizhou realized that although he wasn't an exceptional engineer, he could still work as a programmer, albeit only at a basic level.
However, after attending several job fairs and facing a series of interviews from recruiters, he was defeated.
"Our minimum requirement is at least a vocational school degree in a relevant field. You haven't even completed your studies and expect to apply? Next!"
"Do you have a higher education degree? Any certificates? What level of Computer certification do you have? If you have nothing, what are you doing here? Get out!"
"Do you have any experience? No work experience? Sorry, next!"
Although it was somewhat exaggerated, there were always thresholds to meet. It was best to have a professional background; a strong educational background was also acceptable. If you couldn't even present a diploma and were just a rural person who should be farming or working instead of wasting time at job fairs, what were you doing here? Can't you see the line of people waiting behind you?
"My name is Sun Yuliang, and I am the owner of this Training Class. May I ask what your educational background is and if you have any work experience or certificates, Mr. Jiang?" Sun Yuliang had a decent first impression of him; as long as there was some reason to consider him, hiring him wouldn't be a bad choice.
Jiang Yizhou's expression suddenly became strange. This was exactly what he feared the most. In his previous life, he thought diplomas were not very useful during the difficult job market for college graduates. Although finding a job wasn't too hard, it still came down to one's abilities. However, now he increasingly realized the value of that diploma.
"Hello, Mr. Sun," Jiang Yizhou stammered slightly but managed to explain, "I am self-taught and actually don't even have a junior high school diploma; I started working right after leaving school. I have some interest in computers and have been self-studying until now without obtaining any certificates."
Sun Yuliang didn't know how to respond. If it weren't for the severe shortage of staff, he would have already sent him away long ago. However, running this Training Class alone wasn't sustainable either, so he decided to give him a few questions to test his abilities.
As the owner of the Training Class, he had plenty of test questions and course materials available.
"How about this: I'll give you a set of written test questions. If you can pass them, I'll let you intern here for observation. Of course, three months won't be too long; your level will become apparent quickly. Does that sound good?" Sun Yuliang carefully considered his words and presented the offer while watching Jiang Yizhou for his response.
If someone unqualified tried to fake their way through an internship for three months, it would negatively impact his business. This was training; the teaching quality would be evident without needing to drag things out unnecessarily.
"I am confident I can do it!" Jiang Yizhou met Sun Yuliang's gaze without backing down. Although he wasn't an extraordinary programmer, he was more than capable at an adequate level.
He had also reviewed the Computer certification exam questions; if he took the Level 3 exam seriously, he could pass it. Level 4 would be more challenging and would require returning to university for some time to relearn certain concepts since he had forgotten quite a bit after starting work.
"Wait a moment, let me choose a topic! There's a teapot over there, please help yourself." Sun Yuliang opened the computer and began selecting questions, which eventually gathered into an RD file.
"Just show me the practical questions; the others can be... um... written on paper for now!"
Jiang Yizhou had already gotten used to this requirement of handwritten code. In his rented room, without internet access, the only two appliances were a light and a radio. He could only handwrite and modify code on draft paper, figuring things out by himself, with no way to verify correctness—he had to rely solely on himself.
He felt that doing this had trained his ability to read code. It was hard to imagine how early programmers managed to code under conditions worse than his current situation with computers.
...
After testing Jiang Yizhou, Sun Yuliang was somewhat surprised. This level of skill was not below that of a programmer. Turning to him, he asked, "You really didn't finish middle school?"
Jiang Yizhou shrugged. "In fact, I didn't finish school at all; I learned everything on my own out of interest!"
Sun Yuliang was even more shocked. Many people with such educational backgrounds became successful business owners, but how could someone who seriously studied cutting-edge technology not have completed their education... Oh, maybe it was because they couldn't afford it!
Yes, this confirmed for Sun Yuliang that Jiang Yizhou was indeed a good student who had been overlooked due to poverty. "Jiang, you really are eager to learn! How about this: you can officially start working tomorrow. This month, since there are ten days left, I'll give you one-third of the monthly salary—oh, I almost forgot, the official monthly salary is eight hundred."
Jiang Yizhou didn't think this salary level was low; computers and the internet were quite cutting-edge industries these days.
...
"What's going on here, Sister Yun?" Li Xiaoyun heard a voice behind her, put down the cardboard box, straightened up, and saw it was the young man who often came by.
Li Xiaoyun sighed, seemingly exhausted and lacking energy. She still didn't want to deal with him. "Jiang Zi, I'm about to close up; you don't need to come anymore!"
Then she continued organizing the shelves. There weren't many items left on top; they were mostly things that weren't used often. A few days ago, they had held a clearance sale and managed to clear out most of the products.
"I'll help you!" Jiang Yizhou appeared shy but acted boldly. He took off his outer coat and tied it around his waist, rolled up his sleeves, and asked earnestly, "What else needs to be done?"
Li Xiaoyun took a few deep breaths and ultimately accepted Jiang Yizhou's kindness, even though she knew what that would lead to. "Put everything from those shelves into the cardboard boxes and make sure to categorize them properly!"
"Alright!" Jiang Yizhou said excitedly as he walked over to the shelf and began packing the boxes.
In fact, if he had followed his past life’s mindset, he would have been too lazy to find survival a hassle. Aside from his job and his own life, which he took seriously, he lacked interest in interpersonal relationships and everything outside of daily living.
Now, however, he was influenced by that honest and simple fellow, or perhaps his perspective had been filled in by it.
There weren't many items left, and he quickly packed up the remaining goods.
"Sis, I'm back!" A boy's voice came from outside.
It was strange; everyone knew Jiang Yizhou's intentions when he arrived, yet he still didn't lower himself to inquire about the situation.
It perfectly matched the personalities from both lives!
Both shared this shy and awkward nature; the only difference was that the awkwardness from his past life had twisted into something bizarre over the years, which had vanished with the shift in time and space. Sometimes, a single choice could change a person, while many choices could force someone to stubbornly walk down a dark path!
He firmly believed this.
