Jiang Yizhou inexplicably let out a sigh of relief and continued sipping the tea that had a faint bird-like taste.
"No, that's two different matters!" Ding Zhengnan still had an annoying expression. "I've already admitted my mistake and followed your lead. You gave up, so now it's my turn. My bicycle is still over there!"
Jiang Yizhou felt a sense of vigilance rise again; this was just like Daizhen Chizi, a character he both loved and hated. Sitting in front of the screen, he even found it cute. If he really encountered her, although he didn't think he resembled Gumeimen, he still shared the same disdain for this type of girl.
"So, what do you want to do?"
"Bicycle!" How could you still have the face to ask for a bicycle? Why not buy one yourself? The phone in your pocket could buy two or three of them; unless it’s a limited edition, that would be ridiculous!
"Bye, this topic is off the table. Goodbye, and I mean never see you again!"
...
After that, he indeed did not encounter that girl again. It was a quiet and peaceful spring, a season of revival, as if he were sleeping soundly at home!
"Achoo~" He wrapped himself in a blanket; perhaps it was because the weather suddenly turned cold, and his body hadn't adjusted yet. He kicked off the covers at night and caught a cold.
He pulled out a piece of tissue to blow his nose and continued writing on the letter:
I recently found a job as a teacher, teaching others how to use computers and type. I never expected that someone like me, who hasn't even graduated, would become a teacher. Isn't that funny?
I wonder if Uncle's health has improved. Please forgive me for previously pressing you about your departure; I truly apologize. Everyone has some private matters they can't speak about. I've enclosed a small token of appreciation; please accept it.
Jiang Yizhou
Corresponding with someone as pen pals, each waiting for the other's letters, Jiang Yizhou rarely enjoyed this way of communication. This stemmed from the address left by Li Xiaoyun; he tried sending her a letter, and after two weeks, at the beginning of May, he received a reply. This was already the third letter he had received.
In his heart, he shared many thoughts because this kind of distance might mean they would never meet again. Many things could be expressed without worrying about hurting feelings or breaking their understanding.
As far as he knew, Li Xiaoyun and her brother Li Yunfei were actually orphans who were later adopted by a couple who had a good relationship with her parents. Originally, they intended to find a child bride for their own son, which was understandable.
However, later on, their son's actions forced Li Xiaoyun to leave her adoptive parents' home. The adoptive parents still occasionally provided support, which allowed her to settle down in the capital.
Previously, the adoptive parents' son had gone to prison due to an incident and received a sixteen-year sentence during a special period. The adoptive father couldn't bear the blow and fell seriously ill. They were just an ordinary family, barely holding on.
Upon learning the news, Li Xiaoyun sold her shop and returned to her adoptive parents' home with the money.
After Jiang Yizhou learned the truth, he couldn't help but feel regretful. If he were a tycoon now, perhaps he could generously cover his adoptive father's medical expenses and win the heart of the beauty in one go!
"What are you laughing at? It sounds so disgusting!" Jiang Maode timely interrupted Jiang Yizhou's fanciful thoughts.
"Nothing much, just that the things I bought have gone up a few bucks each. I estimate I can pay you back soon!"
Jiang Yizhou brushed off the old man and cut off his daydreams. He had once thought of this rebirth as a game, treating others as NPCs while seeing himself as a noble player. Winning others' affection was merely like completing a quest. He had entertained such thoughts when he first arrived in this era after getting off the train.
However, after realizing that he couldn't casually come up with ideas or borrow thousands like in the '90s, he could only plead for a little money at the risk of causing a rift with his family. Jiang Yizhou's game-like fantasies had become mere delusions.
Sealing the envelope and affixing a stamp, Jiang Yizhou put on his clothes and stuffed a bunch of papers into his coat pocket. "Uncle, I'm going out for a bit!"
His uncle didn't want to take off the headphones his nephew had bought him, nodding along to whatever he was listening to. Upon hearing Jiang Yizhou's words, he nodded again, waved his hand, and closed his eyes, lost in some program.
Recently, his uncle's behavior had indeed become quite strange. Jiang Yizhou was too busy with work to investigate what was happening, and besides, it felt somewhat awkward to meddle in elder matters.
Stepping out of the door, Jiang Yizhou was immediately hit by the cold wind outside, which woke him up considerably. The sky was gradually darkening; the post office had already closed. However, he simply stuffed two bills into the envelope wrapped in letter paper; it should be fine to drop it into the mailbox.
Riding his bicycle along the street, Jiang Yizhou felt as if someone was following him but pretended not to notice.
As he passed through an intersection with a traffic light and waited for the green light with only a few seconds left, he suddenly pedaled hard and rode across to the other side of the road.
"Hey! Did you two even see the traffic light? Is it worth rushing for that little bit of time? Are you in a hurry to reincarnate?" The traffic police at the booth stopped two bicycles speeding recklessly.
Jiang Yizhou obediently rode up next to the booth and saw who had been following him; she was wearing a hood. However, after being scolded by the traffic police officer for a couple of sentences, she obediently pulled down her hood.
"How similar!" Jiang Yizhou thought to himself as he saw the girl's face, feeling a surge of emotions. Women really do hold grudges!
"Why are you two at it again? Can't you find a mountain to climb for your adventures? Preferably Mount Everest, and don't cause trouble in the middle of the road!"
"Officer, I wasn't running a red light. The light was green when I started! She was the one who ran the red light," Jiang Yizhou explained with a chuckle. The memory of their last encounter was still fresh, and this Traffic Police officer seemed easy to talk to.
"Stop with the joking around. Be serious. You both have issues. You even rode your bicycles here. Each of you will be fined five dollars, or you can pay together." The officer glanced at their bikes, clearly a couple's set, yet they were pretending not to know each other. It needed to be handled seriously.
The two exchanged glances and simultaneously decided to pay separately.
A large green metal mailbox stood nearby, with two openings for local and out-of-town mail. They dropped in letters addressed to Li Xiaoyun and their own correspondence, parked their bikes properly, and sat down by the street. "What exactly do you want? Why are you chasing after me?"
"My bicycle!"
"Didn't you just buy another one... um, the same model? This time it even has a license plate. Learning from your mistakes, huh? Good job! But why do you still need the bike?" Jiang Yizhou teased.
"This isn't about the bike; it's about you! You clearly know your bike is stolen and yet you won't return it to its rightful owner. I can't just ignore that!!!"
