"Hey, girl?" Jiang Yizhou thought it would be good to give Ding Zhengnan a call before leaving. Otherwise, if she came looking for him and suddenly couldn't find him, he didn't know what kind of commotion might ensue.
"Hello," Lu Yan picked up the phone and heard someone on the other end calling "girl," which struck her as a bit odd. "Who are you looking for?"
Huh? Why is it a middle-aged woman's voice? It didn't sound particularly old, but the maternal tone was unmistakable. Jiang Yizhou hesitated for a moment, "Hello, Auntie, I'm looking for Ding Zhengnan!"
"Ding Zhengnan, it's your call!" Lu Yan shouted into the bedroom, then politely told Jiang Yizhou, "Please hold on, she'll be right over."
Ding Zhengnan, who was tidying up her suitcase, felt a bit annoyed. She tossed the clothes she was folding onto the bed and walked out of the bedroom. "Whose call is it? Mom, do you know?"
"Just someone about your age on the line," Lu Yan replied as she handed the receiver to her daughter and sat beside her with crossed arms, seemingly very interested in her daughter's conversation.
"Ding Zhengnan, I have something I want to talk to you about—"
Beep beep beep. Ding Zhengnan suddenly remembered something and panickedly hung up the phone with a loud click, her face flushing red.
"You child, why did you hang up so suddenly? Don't you want to talk to that person?" Lu Yan looked at her daughter curiously and began to suspect something was off since her daughter hadn't returned home in so long.
"It's nothing, Mom! Just go back to the bedroom and help me fold my clothes. We can't delay dinner at home! Hurry up!" Ding Zhengnan urged her mother anxiously.
Lu Yan looked at her daughter with amusement. "Haven't you told me not to touch your clothes since high school? Why are you asking me now? Are you hiding something from me?"
"Just go! Don't worry about me!"
In the end, Lu Yan relented and went back to help her daughter.
Soothe her racing heart, Ding Zhengnan redialed. "Hey, what were you saying?"
Jiang Yizhou answered the phone. "What happened just now? Why did you hang up suddenly?"
"Oh, that was my fault; I accidentally pulled on the phone cord and it got disconnected. I've plugged it back in now; it's no big deal!" Ding Zhengnan said without missing a beat.
"Oh, I see," Jiang Yizhou imagined how that could happen and continued, "By the way, girl, I'm about to start high school. I'm planning to go back to my hometown for a visit! I won't be in Beijing for a few days, so I wanted to let you know in advance in case you come looking for me!"
Suddenly, a series of crashing sounds came from the phone, and then the call was disconnected again.
Ding Zhengnan felt a bit angry and slammed down the receiver. Just as she was about to curse a few words, she realized she hadn't hung up yet and placed the handset back.
She walked into her bedroom, silently picking out clothes and stuffing them haphazardly into her suitcase.
"Ding ding ding," Lu Yan glanced worriedly at her daughter, preparing to answer the phone. Ding Zhengnan stubbornly said, "No need to answer it, just let him call! Let him worry!"
Lu Yan could tell something was wrong, ignoring her daughter, she walked straight to the living room and answered the phone, "Hello!"
"Oh, Auntie, I don't know what happened earlier; the call got disconnected several times. Is there a problem with the phone? And who are you?"
Lu Yan responded reasonably, "It might really be a problem with the phone. As for me, I'm Ding Zhengnan's mother. I still don't know your identity?"
"I guess I'm your daughter's friend. I wanted to say goodbye to her; I'm planning to go back home today!" Jiang Yizhou suddenly felt awkward; facing an elder, respect was necessary. As for honor, it depended on whether the elder was reasonable or not.
The two exchanged some polite information, and Lu Yan agreed to check on her daughter’s situation before hanging up.
Jiang Yizhou took his coat off the hanger and stepped outside. He planned to stroll through the market to see if he could buy some local specialties for his family, like a roast duck from Beijing; he had some fond memories associated with it.
In his past life, his father usually returned home on New Year's Eve or the day before, often bringing back a roast duck. So roast duck was always part of their New Year's Eve dinner. Later on, when he frequently took trains and wandered around Beijing Railway Station, he realized it was just a product sold in the waiting room shop.
He could also buy some new clothes for his parents. Winter coats and down jackets didn't really show off one's figure and were quite expensive. His mother wouldn't want to spend money unnecessarily; everything else should be fine.
"Ding Zhengnan, tell me, what is your relationship with that boy? From what he said, it sounds like you went to his house?" Lu Yan used her conversational skills to gather information about Jiang Yizhou from Ding Zhengnan.
"It's nothing special; we're just friends!" Ding Zhengnan avoided her mother's gaze while pulling her suitcase and headed straight for the door without caring about her mother. "It's time to go home; if I don't hurry back, I won't make it in time to cook lunch for Grandpa!"
Lu Yan watched her daughter disappear at the door and muttered to herself, "That girl! Even after being called 'girl' so many times, she still insists there's nothing going on! I need to ask Dad when we get back."
Jiang Yizhou thought buying a bag of specialty roast duck as a gift from the store wasn't a bad idea; at least it would be more convenient and wouldn't spoil along the way. After searching for a long time on the street, he finally arrived at a department store where he bought the roast duck he wanted along with pastries and a down jacket.
Jiang Yizhou stepped out of the Department Store with a large bag in hand. He looked back and noticed that he was very close to the Supermarket. In the future, he could come here to shop, although it was a bit far, two stops away.
By the time he got home, it was already past three o'clock. The house was relatively tidy, which could be considered one of the benefits of cohabiting with someone of the opposite sex; they both paid attention to cleanliness.
He lay on the sofa and dozed off for a while. When he woke up, it was already past four. He grabbed a canvas bag and stuffed in the things he had just bought. Then he cooked himself a pot of noodles, added two eggs, and sliced a sausage.
"Crunch."
"What is that? It smells so good!" came Qin Yi's voice from the door. "I'm starving!"
She had been called to a meeting early that morning to arrange tasks because two new students were about to arrive. Unlike in the past, they had already connected through WeChat and formed class groups, major groups, and grade groups ahead of time.
Some even had class committee members selected in the group based on their enthusiasm. The new student guide had long been made available through websites or documents for newcomers to understand.
Now, without all that, helping most first-time students who were leaving home smoothly check in and adapt to a new environment was not an easy task.
"What's so fragrant? I can't smell anything; do you have a dog's nose?" Jiang Yizhou said as he took out a pair of chopsticks and a bowl from the cupboard and served Qin Yi a bowl of noodles with a smile.
