"Brake, brake, can you please brake?" Ding Zhengnan kept hitting Jiang Yizhou, who was sitting in the driver's seat. This wasn't a training car, and she couldn't grab the steering wheel, so she could only remind him.
Jiang Yizhou quickly reacted and stopped the car. Reflecting on it still made him feel uneasy; he had never driven before in his past life, only obtained a driver's license and played racing games. Whenever he heard the sound of an engine, it felt like he was flooring the gas pedal.
Of course, after a few scares, Jiang Yizhou had mostly overcome this habit. Flooring the gas pedal was indeed reckless; it was better to drive slowly, he thought with relief.
"What are you thinking? Do you think this is a race? You can just speed around the corner? Seriously!" Ding Zhengnan was also startled; practicing driving with Jiang Yizhou was quite a demanding task.
Ding Zhengnan was teaching Jiang Yizhou how to drive. Originally, Jiang Yizhou wanted to take advantage of his free time to go to a driving school and get his license. However, upon hearing that he could obtain it in a month—though it wasn't very legitimate—many people did it this way, and Jiang Yizhou was tempted. Following the proper procedures would greatly affect his work.
But during this time, he still felt uneasy about getting his license so easily. Wouldn't he become a road hazard with so little practice?
So in the end, he sought out Ding Zhengnan and found a place to practice.
Jiang Yizhou didn't have much to say in response to the girl's scolding. However, as he became more familiar with driving, he felt that with his learning ability, he should be able to pick it up quickly. As for traffic rules, he had already learned most of them; there were just some practical habits he hadn't adjusted yet.
Noticing that Jiang Yizhou accepted her reprimand, Ding Zhengnan instructed him again, "Reverse and pay attention to what's behind you!"
...
At first, it was a bit thrilling, but later on, Jiang Yizhou became somewhat steadier. Of course, it was only somewhat steady; after all, how much could one learn in such a short time? Ding Zhengnan claimed to be an experienced driver, but he didn't really believe her due to his distrust of female drivers.
There are two types of mistakes drivers make: one is knowing there's a mistake but still pressing the gas pedal while seeing a ditch ahead; the other is making mistakes out of negligence without realizing it.
The latter can be corrected through traffic regulations, but for the former, regulations can't help; some mistakes are bound to happen.
Jiang Yizhou glanced at his watch and stopped the car. "It's getting late; I should head back!"
Yes, he felt a bit fatigued from driving and wanted to take a nap and rest.
Then they switched places, with Ding Zhengnan taking over driving while Jiang Yizhou finally relaxed and didn't have to focus entirely on holding the steering wheel.
"By the way, why haven't I seen you lately? What have you been busy with?" Jiang Yizhou casually picked up the half-drunk bottle of water placed in the middle and asked without thinking.
Ding Zhengnan glanced out of the corner of her eye, her cheeks slightly flushed, and then tilted her head toward the window. "Hasn't it already passed? I was busy with the TOEFL Exam recently, and I don't even know how it went."
No wonder there was no noise; she was really studying for the exam! Jiang Yizhou felt ashamed for misunderstanding the girl.
"I see. Are you sure you're going abroad?"
"Pretty much. I'm preparing for it, and my aunt has arranged most of it over there."
Jiang Yizhou nodded, feeling relieved. There wasn't much danger for wealthy people going abroad, except for those who might get brainwashed into becoming fools; the chances of encountering robbery or murder cases were very low.
As for pursuing freedom or seeking liberation, Jiang Yizhou wouldn't believe a single punctuation mark of that; she wasn't that kind of person, and she hoped so.
Jiang Yizhou couldn't help but recall many jokes and images she had seen, making it hard not to think inappropriately.
Moreover, according to news reports, our lives are either heaven or hell; most of the calm years are just fleeting statistics.
"Do you have anything you want to see or do abroad?" Jiang Yizhou asked tentatively.
"Well~~ I haven't thought about it yet. I just think it sounds fun; it's more developed than here, so it's just to see the world!" Ding Zhengnan seemed very open-minded about it. Perhaps she had the confidence to say such things; even if she spent her whole life painting, her family's wealth was enough to support her retirement. As long as China didn't collapse, money wouldn't turn into worthless paper.
"Rich and willful," Jiang Yizhou muttered, feeling a bit discouraged.
If only she had such wealth, she wouldn't have to work so hard in training classes, slowly accumulating capital. Although the Training Class was still quite popular now, it was merely recovering some of the initial investment.
Ding Zhengnan looked at him in confusion. "What did you just say?"
Jiang Yizhou immediately put on a smile and waved his hands. "Nothing, nothing! Just a bit envious of you!"
"Why would you envy me?" Ding Zhengnan said angrily as she honked the horn. "This trip was arranged by my parents; I'm going abroad to study for two years for my bachelor's degree. After I come back, they won't bother me anymore! They were pushing me really hard recently; otherwise, I wouldn't make it!"
So there was this aspect too; there was even less to worry about now. Jiang Yizhou couldn't help but feel pleased. Being a second-generation rich kid wasn't that easy either; being a first-generation rich person was more enjoyable—just without such high expectations. Earning one more portion meant one more joy.
Upon arriving at their destination, Jiang Yizhou greeted the girl before getting out of the car.
"Hey, do you want to come see me off?" Ding Zhengnan rolled down the car window and shouted at him.
"Aren't you still in the application stage? You're leaving now?" Jiang Yizhou asked, although he had never been through it himself, he still had a general understanding of the process.
"I need to go to my aunt's place to get familiar with the environment. I'll come back for a while after the interview next year. So, are you going to see me off or not?" Ding Zhengnan explained.
"Of course I will! We're good friends!" Jiang Yizhou said, and even he felt guilty saying that, unable to meet the girl's gaze.
"Remember, this Friday!" Then Ding Zhengnan drove off, disappearing around the corner of the street.
Not thinking too much about it, Jiang Yizhou slapped his own cheek and got out of the car, immediately feeling a bit cold.
He considered himself not the type to compromise his feelings out of sympathy. It was unquestionable that one should care for oneself, but extending that care to others was a questionable act. When unable to weigh his own feelings, he naturally chose the unquestionable path.
Although it sounded a bit convoluted, this was his fundamental principle in life. Rather than being like that saying, "Those who love from afar do so to avoid loving their neighbors!"
He preferred to empathize with others; this was the most genuine feeling. Himself, family, partner, friends, strangers—he would give love in descending order.
