Ding Zhengnan opened her big eyes and scanned back and forth between her aunt and Jiang Yizhou, radiating joy. "Ah, I want to hear too!"
"You should ask him! He knows best. By the way, are you coming back for lunch?" Lu Feiyan looked up and nodded at Jiang Yizhou, indicating that Ding Zhengnan should ask him.
Jiang Yizhou just shook his head. There was nothing much to say, so he took the girl's hand and said goodbye to Lu Feiyan as he left.
The girl came from a well-off family, and if she cared about someone's background, she wouldn't have actively connected with him when he was still an insignificant person. So there was no need for him to worry about telling her.
"What does my aunt really mean?" Ding Zhengnan asked persistently, holding onto Jiang Yizhou's arm and shaking it while pressing for answers.
"Have you seen the pop-up from qi?" Jiang Yizhou gave her a hint. The pop-up from qi was developed based on the future QQ window, mainly containing news taken from other news websites, along with some news from qi itself. It was essentially a prototype of qi Portal, which would eventually operate independently when the time was right.
"No, I haven't. What's wrong? I don't really like reading the news, so I close it every time it pops up, and it hasn't appeared since!" Ding Zhengnan generally treated qi as just a tool.
Well, to prevent pop-ups from causing annoyance, qi's backend would track user clicks and closures to adjust the frequency of notifications. It seemed that Ding Zhengnan was not the target user for qi Portal.
"Actually, it's not a big deal. A few days ago, my company raised 15% of its shares for 15 million Dollars. In other words, if my shares were converted into Dollars and then into Renminbi, I could be a Billionaire!"
Although Jiang Yizhou maintained a calm demeanor on the surface, his words betrayed an undeniable pride that Ding Zhengnan clearly heard.
"Oh, my man is amazing! Now I can tell my dad that I've found someone even more successful than him!" Ding Zhengnan's face turned slightly red as she recalled a moment when they hadn't confirmed their relationship yet and she had stubbornly said she wanted to find someone more accomplished than her father.
Does this count as coming true?
Ding Zhengnan felt a mix of emotions and didn't respond to Jiang Yizhou's expectations for praise and admiration from his girlfriend, leaving him feeling somewhat disappointed.
Indeed, girls' feelings are hard to understand. Ding Zhengnan was more immersed in the sense of destiny that echoed through their relationship; this feeling of inevitability filled her with beautiful fantasies, more intoxicating than the fact that her boyfriend could become a Billionaire.
“Yi Zhou, can I talk to you about something?” Ding Zhengnan seemed to recall something she was reluctant to think about, and her pace slowed down a bit.
Jiang Yizhou turned to look at her. They had just come out from Lu Feiyan's place, walking slowly along the way, when the girl suddenly stopped. “Hmm? What is it? I'm listening!”
Ding Zhengnan had a somewhat sorrowful expression. “All the universities in California that I applied to rejected me! And the ones in other states are probably even harder…”
At this moment, Jiang Yizhou could only hold the girl's slightly cold hands against his chest. “What’s there to worry about? Your grades were never that great anyway.”
He fixed her hands in place to prevent her from angrily hitting him or punching herself.
“Hmph! You bad person, you don’t even comfort me!” Ding Zhengnan struggled hard but couldn't pull her hands free. After a while, she simply bumped her head against Jiang Yizhou's chest.
“I’m just speaking the truth! You might as well give up. How about coming here to be my secretary?” Jiang Yizhou thought it was quite normal for her to be rejected; her grades were indeed poor, and cramming at the last minute would hardly lead to success.
If she just wanted a diploma, she could find any school, like a second-generation student; it would just be a matter of paying more tuition. However, it was clear that the girl had a purpose, or perhaps her parents wanted her to achieve something. If she could get accepted, that would be great, but the requirements were naturally higher.
Of course, if someone sponsored a few hundred thousand dollars and found connections, getting into a good university wouldn’t be impossible; it would just be a waste if she didn’t learn anything.
“You… you… what are you talking about!” Ding Zhengnan suddenly thought of her father’s flamboyant female secretary and felt both shy and angry. “I didn’t expect you to be this kind of person! Hmph, I’m not talking to you anymore!”
With that, she turned her head away and ignored Jiang Yizhou no matter how he tried to coax her.
What if she really became his secretary? What if he asked her to do things like that? If she refused, would he find someone else? Ding Zhengnan needed to calm down!
In the nineties, sadly, being a secretary had a special connotation; at least that was the public impression, especially given how deeply her father had instilled that image in her.
Jiang Yizhou felt helpless and simply called a taxi. He picked up the girl and they got into the back seat of the taxi after giving the address. The driver glanced at them with an amused expression.
"Hi, can you focus on driving? She's a bit shy, and by the way, there's no need to call the police!" Jiang Yizhou said half-jokingly.
"Sorry, of course I won't call the police!" The driver finally focused his gaze ahead; anyone could tell this was a sweet couple.
Once the taxi sped up, Ding Zhengnan finally got off Jiang Yizhou's lap and sat beside him, waiting for her breath to steady. As the blush on her face slowly faded, she continued, "Aren't you worried at all? If all my applications get rejected, my dad might just shove me into his company to start taking over!"
She stared at Jiang Yizhou, and as expected, he showed no reaction at all, which was really infuriating!
"Isn't there still Qi and email?" Jiang Yizhou said slowly to soothe her. "I'll keep in touch with you regularly. In the future, I'll also develop voice chat and video chat functions. Even the Pacific Ocean won't stop us from seeing each other!"
Of course, he had no confidence that issues like internet speed and technology would be resolved within a year or two. Even if they were developed, the video quality would likely be terrible—none of this could compare to being with the girl.
"You've got it good; I forgive you!" The girl was easily satisfied, especially with that last sentence. Hearing such words from someone who usually had a wooden tongue when it came to sweet talk made her feel delighted.
Jiang Yizhou suddenly fell into thought. Would their relationship become a main storyline when people later questioned the origins of Qi?
To communicate with her across the ocean, Qi reached America. To hear her voice and see her face from thousands of miles away, voice and video functions went online...
