After spending a full six months, he finally arrived at the destination, the location where Wizard Academy recruits students, a gathering point perched on a cliff by the sea.
During this long journey, Daniel passed through three empires and over a dozen principalities, allowing him to witness the vastness of the continent.
Below the gathering point was a town specifically designed to accommodate incoming Wizard Apprentices and their subordinates.
Daniel rested for a night in the town and arranged for his subordinates before he began the hike up to the summit. Along the way, several people approached him to ascend together; they were also incoming Wizard Apprentices. However, most of them felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead, lacking any desire for conversation.
Upon first seeing the gathering point, Daniel was astonished. Three sides were surrounded by towering cliffs that reached thousands of feet high; even knights would find it impossible to climb up, as there was only one path leading through the middle.
At the front of the path stood a squad of soldiers guarding it, allowing passage only to those who presented their apprentice credentials.
Initially indifferent, Daniel decided to check with his chip and was nearly left speechless. In front of him were hundreds of soldiers in this camp, all of whom were knights.
None of them had any attribute lower than zero in the three main attributes: Strength, Agility, and Constitution. This was truly impressive. It should be noted that even his father, a Viscount, only had Strength exceeding zero while Agility and Constitution were just over two. This highlighted how formidable this group was.
A group like this could easily sweep across an empire on the continent. Even if they encountered a Legendary Knight, they would likely be slaughtered without even a chance to escape.
As he entered the gathering point, he noticed large tents surrounding him. While they appeared normal at first glance, Daniel observed that the material used to make the tents was from a creature known as Flame Bull.
Flame Bulls stood about three meters tall and were incredibly strong; if cornered, they could even spew high-temperature flames from their mouths. Hunting one would come at a great cost.
The hide of a single Flame Bull could be worth tens of thousands of Gold Talers. It was astonishing that all these tents were made from Flame Bull hides; it was quite extravagant.
However, there are many benefits. The Gathering Place is close to the sea, with humid air; even in the morning, it feels as if you have been drenched by dew while inside the tent. A tent made of Flame Bullhide will not have such troubles.
At the entrance of the Gathering Place, there are several Squires dressed in white shirts and black vests. Upon seeing Daniel, they smile and lead him inside.
Most of the crowd consists of apprentices around thirteen or fourteen years old, their faces filled with curiosity, just like Daniel. He roughly counted and realized there were at least hundreds of them.
The Squire smiled and said, "Alright, gentlemen and ladies, welcome to the final stop of your journey. Here, you will decide on your future academy and follow your mentors back to your respective academies for wizard training.
Each tent here represents an academy; you can enter any time to take a look. Please remember that once you choose an academy, you cannot change your mind. Those who do will be hanged outside the camp.
Now please follow me; we will first test your qualifications, and then you can choose your academy."
He led everyone to a central tent and gestured for them to enter. A group of people looked at each other, hesitant to go inside.
Facing a test that concerns their future, no one knew what the outcome would be, and they felt a sense of fear, unwilling to confront it. They hoped someone else would go first.
Seeing this, Daniel stepped forward and walked in. Inside was very spacious, with only an elderly Old Witch whose face was covered in wrinkles. She glanced at Daniel but seemed too lazy to speak; instead, she pointed at a crystal ball in front of him, indicating he should place his hand on it.
Daniel placed his hand on top, and points of light began to appear within the crystal ball, swirling around the center like a starry sky. Most of it was red, with some yellow mixed in and just a hint of green.
The Old Witch took a glance and then picked up a quill from an inkpot nearby as if someone were holding it. She dipped it in ink and wrote on Parchment before finally handing it to him.
"Your test is complete; you have only six points of Mental Power, which is just slightly better than the worst apprentice. In terms of elemental affinity, you are highest in fire, followed by earth, with a trace amount of plant affinity.
Alright, your test is finished; exit from the back and begin selecting your academy."
Daniel performed a bow and left the tent. Holding the Parchment in his hand, he looked at the pre-drawn table, which had names and ages at the top, and qualifications and introductions below. It gave him an inexplicable feeling of returning to a past life.
Across from the tent stood a notice board, nearly as large as a wall, making it hard to ignore. It contained information about qualifications.
Daniel glanced at it. Mental Power is the foundation of everything for a wizard, while elemental affinity represents a wizard's potential in various aspects. Although wizards can utilize any power, choosing the path with the highest affinity makes it easier and allows them to go further.
Without waiting for others, Daniel walked to the nearest tent to check it out. In front of the tent stood a wooden board that read:
Black Bone Forest (Black Wizard Academy)
Established 600 years ago, Samantha, a Second-Level Wizard, is the principal, with twenty-four First-Level Wizards as teachers, specializing in shadow, darkness, and necromancy.
Free access to basic tutorial courses, a free set of basic Meditation Method, and five years of residency rights. Additional knowledge can be obtained by paying with Magic Stone and other rewards.
Black Wizard Academy? Does that mean there is also a White Wizard Academy? Or perhaps a neutral faction academy?
Specializing in shadow, darkness, and necromancy. There should be academies that focus on other aspects; since his affinity is highest in flames, he should look for an academy that specializes in fire. If he studies shadow or darkness, whether he can even get started is questionable.
Daniel took a tour around the camp, collecting introductions for all the schools.
The academies are roughly divided into black wizards and white wizards based on their names, each having their areas of expertise, representing two different teaching models.
The content is basically the same: access to basic tutorial courses, a set of basic Meditation Method, and five years of residency rights. Additional knowledge can be obtained by paying with Magic Stone and other rewards.
The years of establishment vary among the academies, but they are all led by Second-Level Wizards, with 0-40 First-Level Wizards as instructors.
This further confirmed Daniel's suspicions. This was the Wizard Academy, aimed at training wizards rather than serving any particular faction. Otherwise, it wouldn't be so consistent.
How could this be? Aren't wizards typically selfish individuals who emphasize equivalent exchange? Why would they think of training low-level wizards? What could their true purpose be?
After thinking for a while, Daniel realized he had insufficient information and had no choice but to give up.
In the Wizard Academy, there were three institutions proficient in fire magic: Six Ring Tower, Flame Throne Wizard Academy, and Ossaf Academy of Magic.
Among the three, the one most skilled in Fire Magic should be Flame Throne Wizard Academy, so Daniel turned to head that way. After all, the benefits offered by these academies were similar; which one to choose depended on his own needs.
Flame Throne Wizard Academy (White Wizard Academy)
Established 4,500 years ago, Cleveland, a Second-Level Wizard, serves as the dean. There are a total of twenty-six First-Level Wizards, specializing in Fire Element, Explosion, and Light.
Students receive foundational tutorials and a basic Meditation Method, along with five years of residency rights. Additional knowledge can be obtained through payments such as Magic Stones.
As Daniel stepped inside, he saw a young wizard sitting bored on a stool in the center. Upon noticing him enter, the wizard smiled and nodded.
"Oh, dear friend, I am your senior Third-Level Wizard Apprentice Cecil. Are you looking to join us at Flame Throne for your studies?"
"Yes, senior. May I ask what price I need to pay?"
"Ten Magic Stones. If you don't have them now, you can work at the academy to earn them. Just make sure to pay it all within two years."
Daniel was taken aback; his hand that had been reaching into his pocket retracted. He only had thirteen Magic Stones on him. Since he could pay later, he decided to sort things out once he got to school.
However, the school is being overly lenient. Wizards value fair trade; how could they allow everything to be settled within two years?
"Alright, hand me your form."
Daniel handed over the form in his hand and asked, "Excuse me, do we need to sign a contract?"
"Just you? We'll deal with that when you get to the academy. For now, go back to town and rest! We'll notify you when it's time to depart."
Daniel clearly saw disdain in his eyes. As he stepped out of the tent, he pondered the meaning behind it. The disdain likely stemmed from the fact that he was not worthy of signing a contract with the academy.
But why would so many academies come here looking for apprentices?
From the looks of it, the academy seemed to have no demands from him at all; why would they come here?
All these questions remained unanswered. Daniel thought for a long time but couldn't find an answer, so he could only shake his head and return to town to rest.
