Michelle, full of doubt, stood in the rooftop garden of a city skyscraper, looking down at the bustling streets below. The constant flow of traffic and flashing neon lights seemed like an endless grand performance.
However, all these magnificent scenes cannot dispel the gloom in her heart. This garden has a contradictory atmosphere that is within reach but elusive, much like the relationship gradually drifting apart between her and Evan.
The garden is filled with exotic flowers and lush trees, every detail carefully designed, much like their love story.
Hibiscus, roses, irises, and various green plants interweave to create a colorful and beautiful scene, but in this enchanting setting, Michelle cannot find any comfort.
Michelle's suspicions began with Evan's recent unusual behavior. He started working very late, and leaving early and returning late became the norm.
Moreover, his credit card statements have clearly increased, many of which are expenses at high-end restaurants and on designer clothing.
What worries Michelle even more is that Evan repeatedly brushes her off, saying, "I'm too busy with work, don't come to my place for now." All these suspicions combined make her unable to resist the urge to uncover the truth.
Michelle drove through the busy urban streets, with the reflections of tall buildings shining brightly on the car window. A series of question marks floated through her mind as she pondered Evan's increasingly unusual behavior. He had become distant, avoiding her questions, and she had a foreboding sense that something was not right.
When the vehicle stopped in front of Evan's residence, Michelle pressed the door unlock button on the key and watched as the door slowly opened.
The modern apartment building is designed with minimalist style and luxurious interior, equipped with the latest technology security system.
However, Michelle still has a spare key because she and Evan once deeply loved each other.
"What should I do if I'm being too paranoid?" Michelle once asked herself in her heart, but she couldn't suppress the urge to find out the truth.
So, filled with doubt, she picked up the spare key Evan had given her and took the elevator to Evan's floor.
Michelle gently opened the door to his place and cautiously stepped inside, a blend of men's cologne and some kind of women's perfume hitting her nose. At that moment, her heart grew even heavier.
She began searching in each room, hoping to find some clues. Finally, in the study's bookshelf, Michelle discovered a hidden drawer containing a stack of thick documents and a silver key.
She curiously opened one of the documents, only to discover that it was an agreement signed by Evan and a woman named Victoria, mentioning co-parenting and monthly payments to Victoria. Michelle's heart sank into chaos, unable to believe her eyes.
Just as Michelle was pondering, the sweet laughter hidden in the bedroom prompted her to take action.
Pushing open the bedroom door, everything was just as she had suspected - Evan and a slim, light brown-haired woman were sitting intimately on the bed.
"How dare you!" Michelle screamed angrily, her face turning red.
Evan and Victoria both stood up in astonishment.
Evan stammered, "This... how did you come here?"
"No wonder you've been making excuses to keep me away!" Michelle suddenly clenched her fists, like a wild beast about to lose control.
Evan had a sudden realization, but also retorted, "It's because you never came back, always wanted to get married, that I had the chance to find someone else!"
Michelle's eyes flashed with a hint of pain, but she immediately suppressed it and said through gritted teeth, "It's fine, anyway we've already broken up, so you can find someone else."
Victoria stood awkwardly to the side, picked up her handbag, and said in a muffled voice, "I'll leave first."
"You keep it for now. We don't have anything to talk about anyway," Michelle said coldly to Victoria, then turned away without looking at Evan.
Evan wanted to explain, but when he saw the disappointment and sadness in Michelle's eyes, he suddenly felt that any words would be superfluous.
"It's you who led me to this, Michelle," Evan tried to shift the blame.
"No, you chose to walk this path yourself," Michelle turned around and looked deeply at Evan, "But it also makes me realize even more clearly that we're really not suitable for each other."
Evan, upon hearing this, felt as if he had been struck at his core. He suddenly realized that losing Michelle might be the biggest mistake of his life.
At this moment, the bedroom felt like a pressure cooker, with the emotions of the three people reaching a boiling point. White curtains hung on the windows, but they couldn't conceal the thick atmosphere of tension in the room.
Michelle finally couldn't control herself, tears welling up in her eyes. "Evan, I didn't think you would treat me like this. I thought we both had an understanding, that we understood each other's bottom line."
Seeing Michelle on the verge of tears, Evan felt heartbroken. "I know I made a big mistake, but please give me a chance to explain myself."
Michelle was shocked that Evan would still talk about "explanations" at this critical moment, and she felt a wave of despair.
"Explanations? What else do you need to explain? I can see it very clearly already."
"Wait, Michelle, let me explain," Evan suddenly strides up to Michelle, as if trying to salvage something.
"Explanation? What else do you think needs explaining?" Michelle's voice revealed an uncontrollable anger and disappointment.
"I've wanted to tell you all along, but I didn't know how to say it," Evan's voice sounded extremely powerless.
"Is that the reason you chose to hide? Because you didn't know what to say?" Michelle looked at Evan in disbelief. In that moment, she finally understood that some things, once they happen, cannot be undone.
"Yes, I was wrong. I should have told you from the beginning," Evan's face turned pale, realizing that he might have lost Michelle's trust forever.
Michelle looked at him, a bitter smile tugging at the corner of her mouth. "Evan, is all of this really just because you didn't know how to tell me? Or is it because you never intended to tell me, just to shirk your responsibility like this?"
Evan couldn't answer; he knew any explanation would seem feeble and inadequate.
"I need time, Evan. Time to figure out what we really are," Michelle's voice trembled, the tense atmosphere feeling like a powder keg ready to explode.
Evan lowered his head, accepting this stern but fair judgment. "Okay, how much time do you need? I'll wait."
Michelle was silent for a moment, then said, "I don't know, maybe I'll never figure it out."
Then she turned abruptly and left the bedroom, slamming the door behind her, leaving Evan and Victoria staring at each other, both unsure of what to do next.
Evan sat down wearily, his mood heavy as if hitting rock bottom. A wrong choice could not only cost him his loved one, but also trap him in an inescapable predicament.
In the moment the door closed, Evan felt a pain of loss, as if all the air had been sucked out of him.
He knew that even if Michelle ultimately chose to forgive him, their relationship would be forever changed.
The exposed agreement in the study sneered quietly at their seemingly perfect but fragile love in the dark corner.
After this incident, Michelle understands even more that Evan can never return to being the person who loved her wholeheartedly in the past.
She left Evan's apartment and returned to her car, then called her friend Linda on her phone.
"I think it's really time to consider starting over this time. Evan has changed, and so have I," Michelle said with a sense of relief but also a heartache in her tone.
Linda responded from the other end, "If he doesn't know how to cherish you, then he's not worth your efforts. You deserve better."
Michelle took a deep breath, touched up her makeup with lipstick, then started the engine and drove away from this disappointing place.
This time, she must make a choice for her own future, no matter how difficult that choice may be.
