At seven in the morning, the alarm rang on time. Gu Tianye opened his weary eyes and stared at the ceiling above. He had tossed and turned all night, unable to sleep. Therefore, his vision was filled with a kind of darkness that was not devoid of light, but rather a grayish darkness, a suffocating dark that pressed directly on his heart.
After pondering for a few minutes in bed, he gently kissed Qiluo Ling's cold forehead. Then, after contemplating her for a long time, he got dressed and left her sleeping form on the bed, finally remembering to gently pull the door shut behind him. Everything felt so tender and affectionate.
At the moment Gu Tianye closed the door, Qi Luoling opened her eyes. In fact, she had already woken up when he kissed her.
Since her discharge from the hospital, Qi Luoling had clearly noticed that Gu Tianye had changed significantly. He seemed to be more affectionate towards her than before; it was as if they had returned to their passionate days of love. He rarely went out with colleagues anymore and always came home right after work to talk and spend time with her, often just quietly staying together.
While Qi Luoling busied herself at home, she chattered about trivial matters among her colleagues. He spoke little, mostly smiling and patiently listening, his gaze always following her as if he didn't want to miss a single moment.
One time, Qi Luoling could no longer stand it and playfully scolded him, "After all these years as an old married couple, can't you see through me yet?"
"Mm-mm, I can't see through you. I want to remember your appearance forever in my heart. No matter where I go, I will think of you," he said softly.
"Is it because of the car accident that you've suddenly realized my importance and started to cherish me now?" she asked with a smile.
Gu Tianye wrapped his arm around her shoulders and suddenly said seriously, "No matter what happens in the future, I will always love you. Always believe me and trust in my steadfast feelings for you."
"Don't... don't say it like those melodramatic lines from TV shows about parting life and death," she laughed heartily.
His throat tightened, and an indescribable sadness surged within him.
After making that difficult decision, Gu Tianye felt both pain and despair. How reluctant he was to leave the woman he loved so dearly! However, only by doing so could all problems be resolved.
Later, when Qi Luoling recalled all of this, she couldn't help but sigh deeply at how beautiful those times were. She truly wished time could turn back and freeze forever in that moment. However, those were just memories; once the sea has been crossed, it is hard to return to dry land; once the splendor has faded away, it turns into sorrow!
That day, Gu Tianye drove to the hospital at eight-thirty in the morning. He was busy with outpatient duties all day long. Due to the overwhelming number of patients, he was supposed to see only fifty patients in half a day; however, when patients from other places pleaded with him for help, he couldn't resist adding another twenty patients to his schedule.
By six in the evening, he was exhausted, sitting motionless in his chair, thinking that he would never become a doctor again in his next life. However, he still had to continue his night shift, so he planned to rest for a while.
As he calmed down, that incident popped up like a screensaver whenever his mind wandered. His mood immediately became heavy.
The notebook contained records of all the bribes he had taken since becoming a doctor. As a cardiac surgeon, he performed many surgeries, and the kickbacks from medical devices were particularly high, so the amount he had received in bribes related to drugs and medical equipment had exceeded six figures.
That notebook was a terrifying hidden danger, not only for him but also involving many people in the hospital. From the first day he accepted bribes, he knew this situation was like a hidden bomb that could explode at any moment. He always deceived himself, foolishly believing that the time of its arrival would be indefinitely postponed, taking it one day at a time.
Ultimately, paper cannot contain fire; he just didn't expect this matter to be exposed so quickly under the sun, and it was discovered by Nie Xiaoyu, who used it to blackmail him.
He felt despondent yet clear-headed; even if he compromised, it would only bring temporary peace. Nie Xiaoyu's greed was insatiable; once she gained an inch, she would take a mile. Any rules of the game meant nothing to her.
He recalled that decision and suddenly lowered his head. When he raised it again, there was a mist in his eyes.
Someone pushed the door open, and he quickly wiped his eyes to compose himself.
His colleague Dr. Chen walked in holding a lab report and handed it to him.
"I found some issues with your wife's blood test during her last check-up," he pointed to a specific area on the report.
"Look here; her serum potassium level is far greater than 5 meq/l. This is abnormal. Have her come back to the hospital for another check-up tomorrow."
Gu Tianye hurriedly called Qiluo Ling.
Qiluo Ling and the nanny Aunt Wang were having dinner. The meal consisted of three dishes and a soup: steamed bass, Mapo tofu, stir-fried corn, and chicken soup with kelp.
Qiluo Ling answered the phone with one hand, nodding in agreement to go to the hospital for a follow-up appointment the next day, while using the other hand to pass the bowl to Aunt Wang, signaling her to serve some soup.
"What is it?" Aunt Wang asked.
"Nothing much, just Gu Tianye asked me to go to the hospital tomorrow. He said there were some issues with my last blood test. I need to get it checked again," Qiluo Ling said casually as she put down her phone.
Suddenly, Aunt Wang's hand trembled, causing the bowl to slip from her grasp and shatter on the floor.
"What happened?" Qiluo Ling looked at Aunt Wang in surprise.
"Oh dear, I'm so sorry, Little Qi. My hand just cramped up a bit, and I couldn't hold the bowl properly. I'm getting old; I'm not as capable anymore." The nanny Aunt Wang avoided eye contact, quickly bending down to pick up the broken pieces of the bowl. However, she accidentally cut her finger on a sharp shard, and blood began to flow.
Qiluo Ling hurried into the study, retrieved iodine and a band-aid from the first aid kit, disinfected Aunt Wang's wound, and wrapped it up. Since Aunt Wang couldn't get her hand wet due to the injury, Qiluo Ling washed the dishes herself after finishing her meal and tidied up everything in the kitchen.
Perhaps due to discomfort from her injury, Aunt Wang went to rest early.
Thinking about her class at nine-thirty the next morning and needing to go to the hospital early, Qiluo Ling went to bed before ten.
At two in the morning, the hallway was pitch black. A Middle-Aged Woman carrying a large bag walked down the dark corridor. Her footsteps were light, guided only by the faint green light above the emergency exit sign. Layer by layer, she slowly approached the first floor.
When she stepped out of the high-rise building, most of the moonlight and starlight were obscured by clouds. However, compared to the completely dark stairwell she had just come from, she could see everything around her clearly. Then, using the dim moonlight as her guide, she hurriedly left...
