“Consort Qin?”
Qin Yaru had only taken a few steps when Lai San arrived with a group of ordinary-looking men.
Lai San quickly caught up and blocked Qin Yaru's path, frowning as he said, “Consort Qin, please come with me. If you are worried about Husband, I can send someone to bring him here.”
Qin Yaru chuckled and shook her head, “It would be easy for me to just leave, but afterward, I would likely face endless troubles, and it would also implicate the people of Wudang County. Even you, Lai San Ye, would probably have to bear the wrath of the Pang Family.”
Lai San's anger flared, his face turning red, “I am not afraid!”
He had always been involved in dangerous dealings. Even though he was subdued by Bai Yunsheng, he was still a local thug in Wudang, at odds with the Official Authorities. He was a rough man who didn’t understand many principles; he was straightforward, stubborn, and impulsive.
However, Qin Yaru could not let him act recklessly. Fearing that he might cause trouble, she took a deep breath and explained seriously, “Even if you are not afraid, you must consider your brothers. Think about it: if the Official Authorities truly decide to make trouble for you, you can leave alone, but your brothers all have families and businesses in Wudang County. Where can they go?”
“If you really want to help, why not take someone to contact Du Steward? You are a Local Tyrant, and you might be able to make a difference. As for me, you don’t need to worry. I am not a helpless woman; those people are not invincible. There is nothing to fear.”
Lai San was taken aback but recognized that Qin Yaru was right. He stood there dumbfounded as he watched her walk away. One of his brothers hesitated and asked, “Third Brother, what should we do?”
“What else can we do? Follow Consort Qin’s lead.” Lai San glared fiercely at the seemingly ancient and grand temple behind him. “If anything happens to Consort Qin, I will burn this place down.”
Baiyun Temple was a Taoist temple where the priests practiced asceticism. Its guest rooms were quite simple, containing only a rough wooden bed and coarse linen curtains. However, it was relatively clean.
Pang Yuanying lay on the bed with a flushed face and felt weak all over, as if his body were tainted with something dirty. He felt uncomfortable; in fact, he was a patient among the kidnappers. The priests at Baiyun Temple had even added an extra soft quilt for him, making his stay more comfortable than others.
But he had always been pampered and accustomed to the best in clothing and food. Surrounded by a large group of Ladies-in-Waiting, he had never endured such hardship before.
Naturally, he found it hard to adapt. Fortunately, although he was spoiled, he wasn’t completely ignorant; he knew how to maintain his composure and did not complain out loud to avoid giving the kidnappers any amusement.
“Hey everyone, take a look! Our Marquis really is as beautiful as a flower, charming and delicate.”
The Tall and Slim Person kidnapper managed to escape from the encirclement of the Official Authorities and ran over here. The injury on his wrist had not yet healed, casually wrapped in a piece of white cloth, blood seeping through, looking quite gruesome. However, he showed no sign of pain on his face. He casually pinched Pang Yuanying's rosy cheek and exclaimed, "Such delicate skin, no wonder you are a Marquis. Your skin is even better than a woman's."
Pang Yuanying was furious, his eyes bloodshot as he glared at the person before him, but he gritted his teeth and remained silent. His eyes shone brightly with rage.
Such beauty made the Slim Figure momentarily stunned, shaking his head and sighing, "What a pity, truly a pity."
Taking a deep breath, Pang Yuanying gritted his teeth and said, "You have some nerve. Do you really not know who I am?"
"How could we not know?" The Tall and Slim Person smirked. "The young master of the Pang Family, the favorite of the Empress Dowager, renowned in Kaifeng City as a playboy, a thorn in the eyes of men and a treasure in the hearts of women. Your name, Pang Yuanying Lord Pang, is indeed well-known."
Pang Yuanying felt a sinking sensation in his heart as he heard the Slim Figure sigh again. "It's precisely because we know your temperament that we had no choice but to bring you here. Ah, our brothers have committed many major crimes; there are at least eight hundred if not a thousand. Yet for twenty years, we haven't encountered any trouble or suffered any losses. The secret is to never leave behind future troubles—whatever we do must be done thoroughly."
He shook his head as if regretting something. "Don't dream about your father or your brother coming to rescue you; they can barely protect themselves. The Pang Family is about to fall apart, and they won't have time to worry about you. Honestly, once the Pang Family collapses, whether you live or die is of no concern to us. We wouldn't bother coming all this way just to make things difficult for you. If you want to blame someone, blame yourself for falling for Chen Wenyue's wife and being so infatuated that you wanted to ruin Chen Wenyue. We brothers also can't stand that pale-faced man, but we can't go against our master..."
"Cough."
Before the Slim Figure could finish speaking, another companion coughed and said, "Stop wasting time with him. Once Consort Qin arrives, we'll deal with him quickly and get back to report. We've already delayed long enough over this matter; if we don't finish soon, we'll definitely face consequences."
Suddenly feeling a chill in his heart, Pang Yuanying wondered whether it was true that these people were causing trouble for his father and brother. He wanted to doubt it but couldn't help but feel that their words were too convincing to be false.
However, Pang Yuanying had great confidence in his elder brother and wasn't particularly worried. Even if they encountered trouble, he believed they could turn danger into safety.
The Pang Family had thrived for so many years without facing downfall; they had always managed to resolve crises smoothly and even rise higher each time.
In fact, months ago, his elder brother had anticipated this crisis and was well aware of it.
But now lying powerless on the bed and unable to move, Pang Yuanying couldn't help but feel anxious. Listening to these people talk about everything being because of Qin Yaru, he couldn't help but feel anger—never did he expect that one day he would end up in such a situation because of a mere woman!
His anger was more of shame and indignation. Pang Yuanying had always made women suffer endlessly; when did he ever go through fire and water for a woman?
The kidnapper with the slim figure narrowed his eyes upon hearing his companion's words, suddenly displaying a fierce expression. He bent down abruptly and forcefully grabbed Pang Yuanying's neck.
Instantly, Pang Yuanying's face turned even redder from the suffocation, blood vessels appearing in his eyes, and his lips were bitten to the point of being raw and bloody.
"Aren't you always high and mighty? Don't you never care about others' lives? Don't you love to casually break others' bones? Today, I'll test it out and see if you really are born superior, different from ordinary people, unbreakable and untouchable!"
His strength was immense, and Pang Yuanying found it increasingly difficult to breathe, as if his lungs were about to explode with pain, and his consciousness gradually blurred.
It seemed like a long time had passed; he no longer had the strength to struggle. He couldn't help but think that this time he might truly be unable to escape disaster. Unexpectedly, the tall and slim person suddenly released him, stood up abruptly, listened intently, and whispered, "They're here."
In the distance, faint sounds of birds chirping could be heard.
A hint of joy appeared on his face as he gently grasped his bloody wrist, a cold glint flashing in his eyes.
Pang Yuanying gasped for breath for a while, coughing violently until the intense pain in his lungs eased somewhat.
For some reason, he didn't feel happy; his heart suddenly raced violently. He struggled to lift his head and looked through the half-open window. Indeed, he saw Qin Yaru walking gracefully into the moon gate with her head lowered.
A woman is called a beauty not just for her looks; many women have beautiful faces but are merely passable in appearance. A true beauty possesses an allure that captivates even when her face is covered or when she wears simple clothes, exuding an irresistible charm even in disarray.
Qin Yaru was such a beauty.
Pang Yuanying tried hard to dismiss her numerous flaws—she was just a villager, a discarded wife, merely a woman who could be easily abandoned by a pale-faced man.
Yet despite her many shortcomings, he found himself unable to control his feelings upon seeing her.
In the time it took to be stunned, Qin Yaru had already knocked on the door and gently smiled, "May I come in?"
Her face was calm and composed, her demeanor relaxed, as if she were not coming to face death but rather attending a grand banquet.
The two kidnappers in the room brightened at the sight of her.
"Chen Wenyue's pale face is truly fortunate."
The Slim Figure rubbed his still-painful wrist, took a couple of steps forward, and reached out to touch Qin Yaru's waist from her shoulder. His movements were slow, carrying a hint of flirtation. Pang Yuanying frowned, his eyes blazing with anger, but Qin Yaru remained smiling, showing no signs of panic.
Her nonchalant attitude dampened the Tall and Slim Person's interest in teasing the beauty.
"Bind her up; don't be soft-hearted. This woman is a thorny flower; one careless move could lead to a bite back," the Skinny Accomplice said coldly, then found a rope to tie Qin Yaru's hands tightly. "You wait here. I'll go get something. Once I have it, I'll give you a signal. At that time, don't hesitate; make it quick."
The Slim Figure frowned but nodded nonetheless, exhaling and saying with a smile, "We were only doing this for our master out of jealousy; we didn't expect it to escalate this much and end up in such a big mess."
His accomplice wiped his face, transforming his appearance, then draped a cloak over himself, instantly becoming an ordinary visitor coming to pay respects. While preparing, he casually remarked, "What loss is there? What we are doing is far better than killing a few women; at least we won't be laughed at when we return."
