As the graduation ceremony came to an end, they would soon be heading to their assigned units. The members of the same unit boarded the private car in a disciplined manner. The vehicle passed through multiple layers of security checkpoints and finally arrived at the building of the combat department. This building was different from other buildings of the Interstellar Federation, appearing more imposing and inviolable. The deep gray exterior seemed designed to absorb any external attacks, while the numerous turrets and monitoring devices implied that this was a highly guarded area.
As the car door opened, a scent mixed with the smell of metal and burnt gunpowder rushed towards them. The graduates stepped out of the car and immediately saw several military officers standing at the entrance, their eyes stern and their faces devoid of any expression.
At that moment, a Sergeant Major suddenly walked out. His uniform was covered with medals and honor badges, clearly indicating that he was an experienced soldier.
"You, group of new recruits, line up and report to me! I don't care which academy you graduated from, to me, you are all a group of new recruits in need of rigorous training!" The Sergeant Major's voice was as cold as steel, piercing into everyone's heart.
The graduates immediately ran nervously to their designated positions, quickly forming a neat line. Even those who had just been proud of their military ranks and assigned departments dared not show any negligence at this moment.
Leo stood in the line, still feeling nervous and uneasy, but he knew that this was the path he had chosen. Judging from the stern attitude of the Sergeant Major and the tight defense of the combat department building, he understood that he was about to face a serious challenge.
Sergeant Major walked through each row, glanced at the face of each new recruit, and stared intensely at Leo. Then suddenly he erupted into a furious roar: "Are you ready? How could you useless new recruits possibly be ready!"
He walked through each row, glanced at everyone, then stopped in front of the formation and slammed a fist onto the front support pillar. The entire building seemed to shake for a moment.
"Listen up, you bunch of maggots. I don't care which prestigious academy you graduated from, or even which garbage planet you came from! Here, you are a group of new recruits in need of reshaping! If you can't meet my demands, I'll make you feel like death is a relief!"
The Sergeant Major scanned each graduate with a sharp gaze, making each one feel like they were walking on thin ice.
"Right now, get down on the ground and start doing push-ups until I say stop!"
No one dared to hesitate, and everyone immediately got down on the ground and started doing push-ups. Leo was no exception. He felt the Sergeant Major's gaze cutting through his soul like a knife, making him understand that this was not a time for joking around.
Sergeant Major walked among them, watching their movements and taunting, "You skinny little devils really seem to need some exercise. But don't worry, I'll personally make sure you become strong enough, no matter what it takes."
Everyone was struggling to do push-ups, but their bodies were already shaking, sweat mixing with the expressions on their faces, showing their pain and unease.
Sergeant Major finally said, "Stop! Stand up, line up, and report in! If I see you moving this slowly again, I guarantee you will have a hard time."
Everyone immediately stood up, reformed into a neat line, and followed Sergeant Major into the building.
When they walked in, Leo turned back to look at the Sergeant Major and found him still standing at the door, staring at them with his sharp eyes as if warning them that this was just the beginning, and more challenges and pain were waiting for them. At that moment, Leo knew that their military career had officially begun, and the road ahead would be extremely difficult.
The atmosphere inside the building matched the Sergeant Major's roar, tense and serious. The graduates began to disperse to their respective reporting departments: Special Operations Unit, Internal Security Department, Light Infantry Squad, Heavy Fire Support Unit, and so on.
Leo looked at a registration sign hanging on the wall and quickly found the symbol for the " Border Defense Department." He walked over and found two other graduates standing there. One was a tall, dark-skinned man named "Mike," and the other was a short-haired, determined-looking woman named "Grace."
After a brief introduction, the three quickly became acquainted. Mike looked worried and said, "I heard the situation on the border is getting worse, and Xyphos' activities are becoming more frequent."
Grace also nodded, "Yes, I heard that the fighting there is getting more intense. Where do you think we will be sent?"
At that moment, a door suddenly opened, and a gloomy-faced Colonel walked out. He saw the three of them and frowned tightly. The three immediately saluted, and Colonel snorted coldly.
"Looks like this year's graduates aren't very impressive," Colonel said, his voice as sharp as ice.
"The border is no joke, especially now. If you want to cry and regret your career choices, go ahead and apply for discharge now."
Leo and the other two clenched their lips tightly, exchanging a determined gaze with each other. No matter how bad the situation at the border was, they had come for this moment, to become a part of the Interstellar Federation Guardians.
"Yes, Colonel!" they responded in unison.
Colonel snorted again, his expression unchanged and unsatisfied, as if their presence meant nothing to him. He turned and elegantly walked back to his office, the door slamming shut behind him.
"It looks like we need to prepare for the worst," Leo said.
"You're right," Mike added, "The atmosphere here makes me feel like we will be facing very serious challenges."
Grace then said seriously, "If Colonel is so strict, then we should be even more prepared. The border situation won't be any easier to deal with than him."
Three of them nodded, exchanged a serious and determined look, and then walked into the Border Defense Department registration office together, fully armed, ready to face what might be the most difficult challenge of their careers.
