Chapter Ten
Yi Nansheng lowered his gaze, concealing the emotions surging beneath his lashes.
As the meal drew to a close, Huo Jincheng stepped out to take a phone call, while Le Yi went to the restroom.
Only Jian Yunong and Yi Nansheng remained in the private room.
"Tell me the truth, did he hurt you?" Yi Nansheng spoke in a grim tone.
"It’s none of your business."
Jian Yunong truly disliked Yi Nansheng's attitude; after all, he was married!
Yi Nansheng's eyes were deep. "Bitten? Such a lie might fool ordinary people."
He almost forgot that this scoundrel had studied medicine back in college. He was once a prominent figure in the medical school. But ever since he married Le Yi, he had given up medicine and chosen to go into business. He had transformed into a wealthy young master, something Jian Yunong could never provide from her ordinary background.
"He doesn't love you," Yi Nansheng stated a fact known by everyone in Quannan City. Huo Jincheng's affair with Bai Ru had caused quite a stir back then.
If Huo Jincheng and Bai Ru's story were a movie, Jian Yunong would be just an extra—no one knew her name, and the public didn't even notice her presence; she was merely a shadow, barely there.
"He married me."
"He's only doing it for the child in your womb."
"He married me."
"Nong Nong!"
In the past, when Jian Yunong was angry, Yi Nansheng would call her by her childhood nickname, and she would listen. Yi Nansheng tried to ease the tension between them with this approach, looking at her with a gentle expression.
"I know you resent me," he said, referring to her resentment over his inability to marry her back then.
Jian Yunong frowned and shook her head. "I don't hate you."
A spark ignited in Yi Nansheng's eyes.
"I don't love you, so how could I hate you?" Jian Yunong smiled lightly. "I have no feelings for you at all."
To her now, Yi Nansheng was just a stranger, a somewhat frightening stranger.
Yi Nansheng shook his head. "Jian Yunong, Huo Jincheng is not suitable for you."
Jian Yunong smiled even wider. "Then what do you think is suitable for me? Being your mistress would be suitable, right?"
Yi Nansheng was taken aback by her retort, his expression more helpless. "Nong Nong, I may not be able to marry you, but I can guarantee that I love you and will treat you well."
How could a scumbag say such outrageous things so confidently?
Not wanting to look at him any longer, Jian Yunong walked out of the private room without a word.
The door slammed shut, cutting off his voice calling for her.
"Nong Nong," "Nong Nong," can that foul mouth really call her that?
At the entrance on the first floor, she caught a whiff of fragrant flowers, and her heavy chest felt slightly better.
Just seeing Yi Nansheng and hearing him say those things made Jian Yunong want to vomit. She pressed her hand against her chest and stood quietly under the grape trellis at the door.
"Hey, who is this?"
An unpleasant female voice rang out at that moment.
A woman in sky-high heels, heavily made up, was linked arm-in-arm with another heavily made-up woman, both looking at her with mockery.
"Isn't this our class beauty? Her boyfriend is that top student from the medical school, right? Still not married?"
"What nonsense are you talking? That Campus Heartthrob is already married; I heard he married a rich heiress." The woman laughed, her bright red lips looking as if she had just eaten a child.
Jian Yunong averted her gaze, preparing to walk past these two gossipers, but was forcefully stopped.
"Jian Yunong, what are you doing in a place like this? I just saw your ex-boyfriend's car. You’re not thinking of going in to see Ex-Boyfriend, are you? His wife is here too. If you're short on men, I can introduce you to someone. Didn't Miss Jian used to enjoy flirting with men?"
Jian Yunong suddenly smiled. "Oh, Liang Cuihua, I almost didn't recognize you. Did you have plastic surgery? How come you look worse than before? If you have money for surgery, why not spend it on dental work? Your mouth stinks."
Liang Cuihua's brows furrowed as she pointed at Jian Yunong and began to curse. "Jian Yunong, you're the one with a foul mouth! Who doesn't know you got dumped by your boyfriend? They say you're worse than a chicken! Acting all high and mighty?"
Another person pulled Liang Cuihua back. "Jian Yunong is just in a bad mood; after all, her mother just died, and the Jian Family doesn't want her anymore. It's so tragic; you shouldn't hold it against her."
Jian Yunong retorted to Liang Cuihua, "How do you know? Are you the chicken?"
Liang Cuihua was so angry that she raised her hand to hit her.
But just as her hand was lifted into the air, it was seized by a strong force.
"This place doesn't welcome shrews."
A man with a dark expression forcefully shook off Liang Cuihua's hand.
With just a gentle movement, Liang Cuihua stepped back three paces before coming to a stop.
"Shrew? Do you dare to call me a shrew? Do you know who I am? Are you going to stop doing business here?"
"I'm sorry, but you are permanently banned from entering this place."
Liang Cuihua was still causing a scene when her companion pulled her back.
"That person is the Boss here. They may seem unassuming, but the last person who caused trouble here is said to still be lying in the hospital."
Liang Cuihua stubbornly pointed at Jian Yunong, "She's also a shrew!"
But that person slightly bowed to Jian Yunong and made a very gentlemanly gesture, "Third Young Master is waiting for you upstairs."
Liang Cuihua could only watch helplessly as Jian Yunong was led inside by none other than the Boss of this private restaurant.
"On the surface, they pretend to be so high and mighty, but in reality, they're just an upscale escort!"
Liang Cuihua cursed indignantly and then took out her phone to snap a picture of Jian Yunong's retreating figure.
As they turned the corner, Jian Yunong couldn't help but ask, "Who is Third Young Master?"
The man with the dark face looked at her in surprise. Was this woman joking? Huo Jincheng was third in line at home, and everyone in Nancheng referred to him as Third Young Master.
At that moment, Huo Jincheng's voice rang out.
"Jian Yunong, where are you running off to?"
He stood three steps away, his handsome features showing an anger that Jian Yunong couldn't quite understand.
"I wasn't running around; I was just checking if my feet could walk."
Huo Jincheng walked over to Jian Yunong and said, "Do you want me to take you to the Five Rings to run a few laps?"
"Sure."
She looked indifferent.
Huo Jincheng pulled her into his arms and whispered fiercely in her ear, "You want your grandparents to see you, right? Save your worries! Pregnant woman!"
The man was too close, his breath making her ears itch uncomfortably. Jian Yunong frowned and tried to struggle. Le Yi and Yi Nansheng appeared hand in hand in their line of sight.
Yi Nansheng's eyes locked onto Jian Yunong's from a distance.
The gaze was sharp, like a blade.
Jian Yunong gave up struggling.
Huo Jincheng was very pleased with Jian Yunong's sudden silence.
"It seems sister-in-law is very worried about brother; she came out to look for him after just a little while. Seeing how well you two get along, your grandparents must be very happy. A good relationship between husband and wife is also good for the baby in your belly."
Le Yi happily winked at Jian Yunong.
Jian Yunong tugged at the corners of her mouth.
When they walked out of the courtyard restaurant, Liang Cuihua and the others were already gone, probably chased away. A group of children were jumping rope at the entrance, and while waiting for the driver to bring the car over, one child bumped into Le Yi's leg.
Le Yi stumbled back three steps but instinctively caught the child first.
"Are you okay?"
She looked at the slightly dazed child.
The children all had striking black and white eyes, making them endearing.
Le Yi took a bag of candy from her bag and handed it to the child. The kids excitedly gathered around, and in no time, they snatched it all up and ran off to play at the end of the alley like sparrows.
"You like kids so much, why not have one soon?" Huo Jincheng suddenly spoke up.
Yi Nansheng remained silent.
The light in Le Yi's eyes quietly dimmed.
"I'm busy with work."
In the next moment, she raised her smile again, a bit embarrassed. "Actually, kids can be really troublesome, right? Yi Nansheng? I feel like I'm still a kid myself."
Jian Yunong nodded in deep agreement.
I’m still a baby too, yet I have to be a baby’s mom now.
She touched her belly with a hint of melancholy.
These small actions caught Huo Jincheng's attention.
When getting into the car, Huo Jincheng opened the door for Jian Yunong and even reached out to shield her head.
"Be careful."
He whispered.
Jian Yunong glanced up at him, "I'm not a child anymore."
"If you don't speak, no one will think you're mute."
Huo Jincheng's smile was dangerous; with someone present, he wouldn't let her lose face. He simply lowered his voice, leaned closer to her ear, and his thin lips curled coldly.
Can this woman not be so prickly? She has no femininity at all!
"Newlyweds carry a fresh sweetness about them," Le Yi said enviously.
Yi Nansheng's eyes were filled with coldness, showing no intention of agreeing; he simply turned and got into his car.
Le Yi followed and got into the passenger seat.
"We're not going the same way." Yi Nansheng suppressed his impatience; he just wanted some peace and quiet. Although he wanted to see Jian Yunong, he didn't want to meet under these circumstances.
But his wife happened to be Huo Jincheng's sister.
After Huo Jincheng got married, Le Yi's interest in gathering them all together seemed to suddenly spike.
Yi Nansheng suddenly thought of a possibility.
Could Le Yi be doing this on purpose?
Yi Nansheng looked at Le Yi with a probing gaze.
Le Yi felt a bit wronged but also had a hint of flattery in her tone, "Yi Nansheng, my car has a small issue; can you give me a ride? Or could you drop me off somewhere convenient for a taxi?"
Le Yi never acted like a wealthy young lady in front of Yi Nansheng. She always appeared like a little woman, telling lies that could be easily punctured with a gentle poke.
For instance, the car that Le Yi mentioned had a minor malfunction was clearly the brand-new sports car that had just been delivered today. Huo Jincheng had given Le Yi a vehicle with top-notch safety features; how could it possibly have any issues?
Yi Nansheng extinguished those thoughts.
With Le Yi's personality, she would not notice these things.
"Okay."
Yi Nansheng still agreed.
Le Yi smiled brightly, "Yi Nansheng, what are your plans for the weekend?"
"Business trip."
Yi Nansheng answered without a second thought.
"For how many days?"
"Half a month."
"…Oh."
Le Yi hesitated several times, but Yi Nansheng pretended not to see.
He knew that the weekend was their wedding anniversary.
