"No more chances! Otherwise, I'll have bodyguards watch you 24/7!" Huo Jincheng said coldly to Huo Jinge.
This was not a threat; Huo Jinge knew that Third Brother would definitely follow through.
"Got it." Huo Jinge nodded obediently and quickly ran out of the restaurant as if she had been granted a pardon.
At the dining table, Jian Yunong put down her chopsticks and Huo Jincheng shot her a cold glance. "We'll settle this later in the room."
Confused, Jian Yunong glared at him. "Why? I'm innocent. Why do you want to settle things with me?"
Huo Jincheng stood up, one hand on her shoulder and the other bracing against the table, his posture wrapping around her as if he were about to kiss her, but he didn't.
His deep voice carried a hint of displeasure. "Why not explain? Is it fun to let me misunderstand you?"
If there was a misunderstanding, could she take the opportunity to mention divorce?
Although Jian Yunong had thought about it, she wouldn't be foolish enough to say it at this moment. Her big eyes rolled around. "Do you think I can convince you with my words? You only believe what you see. So why should I even bother explaining? You'd just think I'm lying."
It sounded as if Huo Jincheng were a very domineering person.
Huo Jincheng raised an eyebrow. "Whether or not you explain is your attitude; whether I believe it is my business."
Not a single word of explanation came from her, which showed that Jian Yunong's attitude was problematic.
"Fine, fine, fine. Whatever you say is right." Jian Yunong pouted, her chubby cheeks looking very touchable. Huo Jincheng reached out to gently stroke them, and indeed, they felt as good as he imagined.
"I'm going out for a walk."
With the servant still cleaning up, Jian Yunong didn't want to clash with him.
"I'll accompany you."
"No need."
Feeling that her refusal was too direct, Jian Yunong added, "I'll just walk around the garden. You still have things to do, so go ahead and take care of them."
Huo Jincheng indeed had matters to attend to. He reminded her not to go near the pond and returned to his study.
Jian Yunong was certainly not the type to listen obediently. The scenery by the pond was the best, with the rockery jagged and intriguing. She casually chose a stone to sit on.
Faintly, she could hear a slight sobbing sound.
"Who? Who's there?"
As the wind blew, the sound suddenly vanished. Jian Yunong felt a chill run down her back; the moonlight above was obscured by dark clouds. She realized how terrifyingly dark it was around her, and those jagged rocks transformed into the most fearsome monsters hidden in the night.
The echo of Huo Jincheng's warning rang in her ears: don't go near the pond.
Jian Yunong immediately jumped down from the rockery cautiously, but she felt someone push her from behind. With a splash, she fell into the pond.
On a summer night, the water was icy cold.
Jian Yunong couldn't swim and choked on several mouthfuls of water, struggling and shouting for help!
Splash! Someone jumped in and quickly reached her side, pulling her up.
Back on shore, Jian Yunong felt as if she had just walked through hell; it was an awful experience.
Someone approached with a flashlight. "What happened?"
Jian Yunong clearly saw that the person who saved her was Yi Nansheng.
Le Yi stood by the Rockery, and next to her was Huo Jincheng.
He strode over, and the way he picked up Jian Yunong from beside Yi Nansheng could be described as snatching; it was very rough and lacked any gentleness.
"I told you not to come here, didn't I?" Huo Jincheng scolded Jian Yunong.
"Yes, this place is so remote that people usually don't come here. What a coincidence, brother-in-law saved Sister-in-law."
The speaker was Bai Yaoyao, known for her distinctive way of speaking; she was always ambiguous and rarely spoke normally.
Le Yi's expression also turned sour.
Jian Yunong clutched Huo Jincheng's clothes tightly; she was frightened, soaked, and still being scolded. "I was pushed down by someone."
Le Yi spoke up from the side, "Brother, let's take Sister-in-law back to take a hot bath. She looks quite shaken."
Huo Jincheng carried Jian Yunong and left quickly.
Le Yi prepared to help Yi Nansheng up, but he avoided her.
"I'm wet and cold; I don't want to infect you."
Though it sounded caring, Le Yi felt very sad hearing it. He had never been this considerate towards her; saying this in front of others was merely giving her a way out, not wanting to make contact with her.
In his heart, he still seemed to think that this child was not his. He felt she had betrayed him, so he thought she was dirty and didn't want her to touch him.
Le Yi forced a smile, "Then you should go upstairs to take a shower quickly; I'll have the servant prepare some clothes for you."
Yi Nansheng walked past her, and Le Yi slowly followed.
Bai Yaoyao stopped her.
Yi Nansheng seemed unaware; his long strides quickly took him around the corner.
"What do you want?" Le Yi said to this Sister-in-law with a cold expression. "You don't think that just because Elder Brother is back, you have someone backing you up, do you? Elder Brother hates women who stir up trouble the most. I see that Sister-in-law still hasn't figured out why Big Brother doesn't like coming home after being neglected for so many years."
Le Yi's words hit the mark, and Bai Yaoyao's eyes glinted with malice as she smiled brightly. "Le Yi, if I were you, I wouldn't be in the mood to meddle in other people's affairs. Your husband showing up next to someone else's wife right away, tsk tsk..."
"Are we on good terms? What right do you have to discuss my husband with me?" Le Yi shook off Bai Yaoyao's hand. "You appeared quite quickly. If I'm not mistaken, you just came in through the small door from the back garden into the living room, right? If Third Brother knew who pushed his wife into the water, what do you think he would do?"
Bai Yaoyao's body stiffened.
"Want to make a move on me? There are plenty of people watching us talk here." Le Yi smiled, her expression lively. "Think about yourself. You've been married for so long without any reaction in your belly; do you think the family would blame it on Big Brother? Why is it that after marrying Jian Yunong, Third Brother visits the old house more often, while Big Brother doesn't come home for years at a time?"
"You..." Bai Yaoyao trembled with anger; Le Yi's sharp tongue was hard to counter.
...
In the bedroom, Jian Yunong bit her lip and remained silent while Huo Jincheng impatiently urged her to take off her clothes.
"Get out."
"Where haven't I kissed or touched you? Hmm?"
The last time she got drunk, he bathed her, and she had shown no shyness as he handled her from start to finish.
Jian Yunong awkwardly lowered her head and submerged herself in the water. "The pool is so dirty."
Huo Jincheng coldly snorted and closed the door behind him as he left.
Jian Yunong had just put on her bathrobe when Huo Jincheng pushed the door open and walked in.
"Why didn't you knock?"
Jian Yunong was startled; fortunately, she was already dressed.
Huo Jincheng picked her up and placed her on the bed. "Are you hurt?"
"No."
Jian Yunong recalled how she had struggled in the water earlier and felt a lingering fear, causing her expression to darken as she lowered her head.
"Did you see who pushed you into the water?"
Jian Yunong thought seriously for a moment, her small hands twisting together. "Could it be…"
"What is it?" Huo Jincheng looked at her earnestly, stroking her hair. "Don't be afraid, just say it."
With him around, she would certainly have support.
"Supernatural…"
Huo Jincheng: "…"
The little foodie was stunned with fear.
Huo Jincheng gently patted his silly wife’s head, feeling sorry for her. "You can talk about such things in front of me, but never mention them to Grandma and Grandpa."
"Is it because of bad luck?"
Jian Yunong also felt that she was being foolish. After all, she was a progressive young person; how could she have such thoughts? It was truly terrifying.
"No, it's because it exposes your actual level of intelligence."
"…"
Jian Yunong buried herself in the blankets, sulking and not wanting to talk to him.
Huo Jincheng sat on the edge of the bed and pulled her out, "Your hair is still wet; you need to dry it first."
Jian Yunong had no choice but to let him dry her hair.
"Do you often dry Bai Ru's hair? Why does it feel like you're so used to doing this…"
She even knew that she liked a medium breeze.
Huo Jincheng expressionlessly gave her a light smack on her backside. Jian Yunong gasped and sat up, sensitive, "Talk nicely; don't hit me."
"If it can be solved with a little action, why waste breath?"
Huo Jincheng unhappily forced her back down. The little white-eyed wolf clearly forgot how he used to take care of her when she bathed, washed her hair, and dried it.
She had mentioned what type of breeze she liked herself. After switching to a medium breeze, she felt so comfortable that she hummed and refused to let go of the hairdryer.
How cute she was back then! Unlike now; if he weren't holding her down, Jian Yunong would have probably jumped up and run far away, not wanting to stay by his side for even a moment.
"You better behave. I don't want Grandpa and Grandma to find out about your past with Yi Nansheng."
After drying her hair, he held her tightly, his deep voice whispering in her ear as his lips lightly bit her soft, white earlobe. Jian Yunong felt completely stiff, her expression difficult to read. She wanted to say that being with him was nothing to be ashamed of, but thinking of Huo Jincheng's personality, the more she resisted, the more likely she would end up pinned to the bed and taught a lesson.
Jian Yunong bit her lip and obediently nodded.
Huo Jincheng's dark eyes fell on her lips. "No biting."
"Why?"
Why does this man care so much?
He kissed her deeply, disrupting Jian Yunong's breathing rhythm before finally releasing her.
"Still asking why?"
"…"
No more questions; she couldn't win against Rogue. Jian Yunong seized the opportunity to escape.
At that moment, her grandmother knocked on the door.
"Jian Yunong."
"Yes."
Jian Yunong felt like she had seen a savior and prepared to jump out of bed to open the door, but Huo Jincheng pulled her back and pointed at her, warning, "Just lie still."
Huo Jincheng went to open the door. Her grandmother had brought a bowl of Ginger Soup after hearing about her falling into the water.
"Be careful. From now on, if she wants to go anywhere, you should accompany her."
Grandma reminded Huo Jincheng.
"It's troublesome." Huo Jincheng agreed, but it was reluctant. "Don't worry, Grandma, I will handle it."
"Don't think I'm being naggy. She has the same constitution as you. Both of you need to be careful!"
This led back to the fundamental reason for his marriage to Jian Yunong.
"I understand, Grandma."
Huo Jincheng carried the bowl of Ginger Soup back, and as soon as Jian Yunong smelled it, she started shaking her head and burrowed into the blankets.
She wished she could turn into a corpse.
"I don't like this smell."
Ginger is a good thing when used as a seasoning.
But when it becomes ginger tea, it couldn't be more terrifying for Jian Yunong.
