The sky was overcast, heavy clouds seemed to hang low, pressing down on people's hearts, making it hard to breathe.
Jian Yunong wore mourning clothes, kneeling before Old Master Huo's spirit tablet, her hands continuously burning paper offerings.
Many people came to pay their respects; luxury cars lined up from the funeral home entrance all the way down the street for miles, with no end in sight.
At the peak of the mourning period, hundreds of people in the funeral home bowed and paid their respects together, creating a solemn and impressive scene.
However, that peak had already passed.
Huo Jincheng walked in from outside, his black suit accentuating his originally cold demeanor even more sharply.
His gaze immediately fell upon the small figure of Jian Yunong kneeling there, while everyone else had long since disappeared.
A small flower on her chest swayed gently with her movements.
Silly wife.
Huo Jincheng approached and squatted down.
Jian Yunong did not notice Huo Jincheng's arrival; suddenly, the Hell Money in her hands was snatched away.
Huo Jincheng frowned, his slender fingers clearly tossing the pieces of Hell Money into the fire pit. The blue flames instantly consumed the Hell Money, burning away the living's memories of the deceased.
The flickering firelight cast shadows on his face, but his slightly upturned Danfeng eyes remained bright throughout.
"Get up," Huo Jincheng signaled for Jian Yunong to rise.
Kneeling for too long, Jian Yunong's feet had gone numb. She frowned, her palms pressed against the ground, unable to stand up smoothly.
Huo Jincheng frowned slightly as he watched Jian Yunong's hands touch the ground, preparing to push herself up. With a swift motion, he scooped her up.
This was the mourning hall!
Jian Yunong felt a bit embarrassed and struggled uneasily. "Put me down."
Huo Jincheng tightened his hold on her as if to assert dominance. "Do you think you can still walk?"
Her legs were completely numb now.
Jian Yunong was carried by Huo Jincheng to the lounge, and just as they turned the corner, they bumped into Sister-in-law Bai Yaoyao.
Bai Yaoyao's face was cold. Did Jian Yunong really have to make a scene at the old man's funeral?
"Isn't that a bit too delicate?"
Huo Jincheng smirked coldly. "I care about her. Even if she were made of steel, in my eyes, she's too delicate to be treated harshly. You're Sister-in-law; since you want to put on this act, why don't you kneel and burn some paper? Let's see if it's easy to talk while standing."
Bai Yaoyao rolled her eyes dramatically. "She insists on showing her filial piety; how can we not give her that opportunity?"
Huo Jincheng glanced back at Bai Yaoyao, a chill emanating from him that made one feel uneasy. Bai Yaoyao dared not say another word.
"Why do you have to get angry with her?" Jian Yunong said softly as she was placed on the sofa, trying to persuade Huo Jincheng. "She probably has had a hard life; that's why her words are so harsh."
Huo Jincheng maintained a stern expression as he gently massaged Jian Yunong's numb leg in his palm. "Everyone has left. What are you still doing here? The funeral home staff will take care of the incense."
Jian Yunong leaned against his shoulder. "I want to burn more for Grandpa."
She felt tears welling up again.
Before his passing, Grandpa had played chess with her; she could say she was the only one who saw him off. Jian Yunong had always regretted that if she had stayed by Grandpa's side, would he have not left?
His silly daughter-in-law.
It turned out she had been feeling guilty about Grandpa's sudden death all along.
Huo Jincheng lifted her onto his lap. "Nong Nong."
He gently stroked her hair, wiping away the tears that had gathered at the corners of her eyes. "Grandpa played chess with you before he left; he must have been very happy when he passed because he rarely won. You didn't let him win, did you?"
Jian Yunong shook her head. "Maybe I should have let him win. If it hadn't been so exhausting..."
Huo Jincheng interrupted her, "Nong Nong, life is predestined, and death is part of it. Grandpa loved you; he wouldn't want to see you feeling this guilty. He enjoyed playing chess, and he must have been very happy when he left. His lips were still smiling."
Jian Yunong was already crying, her vision blurred with tears as she leaned into Huo Jincheng's embrace. He held her tightly, lovingly stroking her back.
He had been too busy lately and hadn't taken care of her emotions properly.
Silly Daughter-in-Law was indeed foolish; she had probably been feeling guilty all along. Seeing her tears flow endlessly filled Huo Jincheng with heartache.
Jian Yunong did not cry for long; she quietly fell asleep in Huo Jincheng's arms.
Huo Jincheng placed her on the sofa and covered her with a thin blanket. The air conditioning in the room was turned up, and Huo Jincheng sat beside her, watching Jian Yunong's aggrieved appearance, with misty droplets still clinging to her long eyelashes.
At that moment, the door to the lounge opened, and Huo's mother appeared at the entrance. As soon as Huo Jincheng saw his mother's expression, he immediately stood up.
He quickly walked out and positioned himself in front of his mother.
"Mom, Nong Nong is too tired; she has been kneeling all day," Huo Jincheng spoke before his mother could say anything.
Huo's mother glared at him. "Is that so? Can't she handle this little hardship?"
"Mom!"
Huo's mother was very displeased with Huo Jincheng for being concerned about Jian Yunong. "Let her get up; even if she's asleep, she should be sleeping over there while burning incense!"
After all, the old man had been playing chess with Jian Yunong when he passed away.
"Mom! Don't blame her."
Huo Jincheng's expression turned serious, tinged with anger.
The old man's passing was an accident; why did it have to be tied to Jian Yunong?
At that moment, the door to the room opened.
Jian Yunong stood at the door, "Mom."
Huo's mother had a displeased expression.
"I just rested for a while. I'm going down to check; the mourning hall can't be lacking people."
She started to walk out when Huo Jincheng grabbed her.
Huo Jincheng was unhappy, and Jian Yunong smiled at him, reassuring him that it was fine. There was no need to argue with her mother-in-law over this.
Kneeling to burn paper, what hardship was that?
"I'll go with you," Huo Jincheng said, holding Jian Yunong's hand.
"Huo Jincheng, come here. I have something to tell you."
Huo's mother dropped this line and walked into the lounge.
Huo Jincheng frowned, and Jian Yunong let go of his hand, "Go ahead."
When Jian Yunong reached downstairs, Bai Yaoyao was kneeling there. Upon seeing her approach, a mocking smile appeared on her lips.
She must have been scolded by her mother-in-law, right?
Bai Yaoyao had timed this perfectly to put on a show for her mother-in-law, highlighting Jian Yunong's laziness.
Jian Yunong walked over, knelt beside, and repeated what she had been doing all morning.
The sound of high heels clicking on the floor echoed in from outside.
Jian Yunong did not notice who was coming; every time she burned Hell Money, she thought of her grandfather's peaceful passing.
At that moment, a slightly surprised voice came from beside her.
"Sister, why are you here?"
Jian Yunong looked up slightly and first saw a pair of red dancing shoes, beautiful and delicate, paired with a pair of jade-white straight legs. In this slightly cool weather, those legs were definitely a beautiful sight.
Bai Yaoyao squatted down a bit, lowered her head, took the Hell Money beside her, and tossed it into the fire pit.
This was Jian Yunong's first time seeing Bai Ru up close.
She was beautiful, her skin glowing like white jade under the warm light.
But why was she here?
Wasn't Bai Ru supposed to dislike the Huo Family?
