Jian Yunong was still busy peeling shrimp when Huo Jinge returned from evening study and saw her brother and sister-in-law sitting together. Her Third Brother was acting like a child, wanting his sister-in-law to feed him. Huo Jinge paused for a moment, then walked upstairs with her head down, not saying a word, still angry about what had happened a couple of days ago and not wanting to talk to anyone.
Jian Yunong gently nudged Huo Jincheng, signaling him to look at Huo Jinge. Shouldn't he comfort her? After all, she was still young.
However, Huo Jincheng leaned closer, the warm and soft sensation brushing against Jian Yunong's forehead. "You can't spoil children."
What if they had their own children in the future?
Jian Yunong slowly glanced at him. Huo Jincheng caught her gaze and silently asked if there was a problem.
No problem, of course not. It was too early to discuss such things now. Jian Yunong shook her head and fed some shrimp meat to Huo Jincheng.
Although she had peeled more than half a bowl of shrimp shells, there wasn't much meat in reality. Jian Yunong felt a bit worried; would this be enough to eat?
"Let's eat something." Jian Yunong wiped her hands clean, and just as she set down the used wet wipes, Huo Jincheng picked her up in one swift motion.
Jian Yunong was startled and wrapped her arms around his neck. The drunk man held her steadily, grinning mischievously with an alluring charm. "Let's go to the room for a feast."
Jian Yunong's face instantly flushed with embarrassment and anger as she lowered her voice. "Put me down! What if someone sees us?"
Huo Jincheng confidently strode upstairs, his deep voice laced with a teasing arrogance. "So what if they see us? We're legal!"
Jian Yunong: "..."
She shyly buried her face in Huo Jincheng's chest, feeling too embarrassed to face anyone.
"Open the door."
Huo Jincheng called out Jian Yunong's name softly. "I have both hands full."
Jian Yunong had no choice but to reach out and press the doorknob. Huo Jincheng kicked the door open and then used his foot to close it behind them.
Jian Yunong was placed on the bed, and Huo Jincheng's tall figure immediately pressed down on her. Jian Yunong could hardly catch her breath and, lifting her chin, gasped, "You, go take a shower."
Huo Jincheng paused for a moment, looking down at the flushed Jian Yunong. "You help me wash."
Jian Yunong pushed him away with force, pouting her lips that had been kissed red, her tone filled with dissatisfaction. "Go by yourself. Who told you to drink outside!"
Huo Jincheng lightly pecked her nose. "Then I won't wash."
Was this a threat to her?
Jian Yunong thought that the drunken Huo Jincheng seemed to have turned into a child; was he acting spoiled?
Huo Jincheng's kisses traveled from Jian Yunong's jawline to her neck and collarbone, gradually moving downward...
At that moment, the phone rang, and the romantic atmosphere vanished in an instant.
Huo Jincheng got off her, and the dazed Jian Yunong slowly opened her eyes and adjusted her clothes.
"I'll be right there." Huo Jincheng's expression turned serious as he immediately stood up from the bed.
"What happened?" Jian Yunong followed him. Huo Jincheng held her in his arms, tightening his embrace slightly. "You should sleep early. I'm going out for a bit; it's something at the company. Don't think too much about it."
Is that so? Jian Yunong felt that Huo Jincheng seemed to be hiding something from her, but she didn't press further. If Huo Jincheng didn't want to talk about it, asking repeatedly wouldn't help.
"Go ahead. Come back early." All Jian Yunong could do was let Huo Jincheng go with peace of mind. She smiled, and as soon as she did, her somewhat plain eyes instantly became lively and charming. Huo Jincheng kissed her cheek and said in a hushed voice, "Don't wait for me."
Maria Hospital was still lit up.
When Huo Jincheng entered, he paused for a moment; the floor was in disarray, littered with documents and a shattered picture frame. He finally stood still in front of the office desk.
Le Yi sat like a statue in the chair, her wide desk blocking her stomach. She was still very thin, and from the low angle, shadows cast over her face.
"You called me over just to see the consequences of your tantrum?" Huo Jincheng said with his hands in his pockets, his tone laced with subtle sarcasm. "You need a cleaner."
This person clearly knew why he was called over but pretended to be clueless.
Le Yi's gaze fixed on her hands, tightly clenched into fists. "Why?"
Her voice was hoarse, each word bitten off sharply, bursting forth from her throat. "Why do this?"
She stood up, tears welling in her eyes. "I’m still carrying Yi Nansheng's child, and you’re forcing him to divorce me? What kind of uncle are you! How can you face your unborn nephew?"
"He doesn’t love you."
Huo Jincheng's face bore a cruel calmness, his cool voice slicing through the facade Le Yi had been pretending not to see. "This marriage can't be ended just because I want it to. The key is that he wants out. You two only got married for the certificate; aside from this child in your belly, tell me what else is there in your marriage? It won’t matter when the child is born; as the uncle, I can raise it as my own for a lifetime. But I can't let you continue deceiving yourself like this."
Le Yi covered her face, her hands pressed against the desk, her hair falling down to her collarbone.
There were no cries, yet it was more suffocating than wailing.
Huo Jincheng watched her silently.
Le Yi had no tears in her eyes; she felt like someone waiting for the other shoe to drop. Now that everything had settled, she surprisingly felt a sense of relief.
"How many times did you see Yi Nansheng this year? After you got pregnant, you saw him more often than he saw Jian Yunong. Le Yi, loving someone to this extent—can you bear for your child to one day ask you why mommy and daddy are never together? Why daddy doesn’t come to see you? I shouldn’t have helped you from the start."
Huo Jincheng picked up the album on the floor, which had photos of Yi Nansheng on it, and tossed it into the trash can with a light thud as it settled back into silence.
When dealing with useless feelings, they should all be thrown into the trash.
"If you are unhappy, just smash everything. If that doesn't vent your anger, then set it on fire. It just means that the old won't come back and the new won't arrive."
Huo Jincheng tapped his fingers on the smooth table surface and reminded softly, "I'll cover all the expenses."
Le Yi let out a painful sob from her throat and finally raised her head to look at Huo Jincheng, her eyes revealing a piercing sharpness. "Then why don't you get a divorce?"
Huo Jincheng withdrew his hand. "Why should I get a divorce? Jian Yunong is my wife, and I am her husband. This is a fact we both acknowledge."
As a couple, they regarded each other as the most important person in their lives; this is the fundamental basis of being married.
And what about Le Yi and Yi Nansheng?
After becoming pregnant, Le Yi was almost entirely alone in nurturing the baby, going for check-ups, doing everything by herself.
She didn't feel anything wrong with living alone before, after all, she was Yi Nansheng's wife. But after becoming pregnant, she seemed to have become much more fragile. Without her husband's company, that emptiness was magnified; even her busy work couldn't fill the cold loneliness she felt.
Especially since her work environment was in a hospital, where she encountered many pregnant women every day and saw various couples. Pregnant women accompanied by their husbands seemed like two entirely different beings compared to those without.
Those with husbands could act spoiled, while those without had to endure discomfort silently.
This kind of strength was admirable but also heart-wrenching, evoking even more sympathy.
Le Yi's tears finally fell, trailing down her jaw and landing on her skirt. Her hand weakly loosened, causing something to drop to the ground. The crisp sound rolled to Huo Jincheng's feet before stopping.
A diamond ring, simple in style and very dull, as if it had been cherished and touched countless times, had lost its initial luster.
If memory served correctly, this was Le Yi's wedding ring. When she married Yi Nansheng, she handled all the wedding arrangements herself; only the wedding ring was bought by Yi Nansheng. Huo Jincheng had some understanding of luxury goods; such a ring would definitely not exceed five figures in terms of craftsmanship or quality.
In his mind, Le Yi deserved a ring worth millions.
Le Yi grew up being treated like a princess. Although Huo Jincheng's mother was very strict with him, she was very kind to Le Yi. Even though she was not her biological daughter, she was treated better than one.
Carrying a bag worth hundreds of thousands and driving a luxury car worth millions, this little princess fell into the mundane dust of love, unable to part with an ordinary yet cheap ring. For many years, she carried it with her; if she couldn't wear it on her finger, she would wear it around her neck.
Huo Jincheng felt a pang in his heart. "Le Yi, you are studying medicine. You should know that when a wound festers and the only solution is to cut away that piece of flesh, the best way is to do just that. It will hurt at the moment, but afterwards you will heal. If you keep putting it off out of fear of pain, you might end up having to remove entire organs, and the consequences would be immeasurable."
"Third Brother, could you... please go out?" Le Yi's voice trembled with tears, as if a knife had pierced her heart, trying to sever the bad part and forcibly strip away the name Yi Nansheng from her life, her very essence. The pain made it nearly impossible for her to think. "I want to be alone for a while."
Tears streamed through her fingers; she was on the verge of breaking down.
Huo Jincheng closed the door behind him.
Le Yi leaned back in her chair, tilting her head up to stare at the ceiling as her vision blurred.
She knew Huo Jincheng was right. She had been deceiving herself for so many years, thinking that by winning Yi Nansheng's affection, she would win his heart; believing that over time he would come to love her; thinking that as long as she remained useful to him, he would never leave her.
But despite all her calculations, even dragging Third Brother and innocent Jian Yunong into this romantic scheme, in the end it all came to nothing.
Perhaps she was wrong from the start. Love can take on countless forms, but it is certainly not about exhausting oneself with schemes and receiving no response in return.
She loved so painfully; clearly it was unsuitable, yet she comforted herself that the more suffering she endured now, the sweeter it would be in the future.
Huo Jincheng stood outside the door. The hospital corridor was quiet, exuding a chilling atmosphere. His eyes were dark and cold.
