California, USA.
Warm sunlight streamed through the bright floor-to-ceiling windows into the room. At exactly five o'clock, the alarm clock rang urgently, and a figure on the bed stirred impatiently.
She reached out to turn off the alarm, anxiously raked her messy hair, kicked off the covers, and rolled out of bed. Her pink striped linen slippers shuffled clumsily as she made her way to the bathroom.
While opening the wardrobe to find clothes, she casually checked her voicemail. She had stayed up late in the study working on design drafts last night and had slept soundly all day today, unsure if anyone had tried to reach her.
Just as she was picking up clothes to try on, a familiar voice echoed in her ears: "Miss, the President is ill and hospitalized. The doctor says surgery must be performed as soon as possible. Please return the call upon hearing this message."
Gu Lvq Qi's mind went blank in an instant, and the clothes slipped from her hands to the floor. She hurriedly dialed her father's number, but there was no answer. When she called Secretary Xu's number, it was busy. For a moment, she couldn't think of anyone else to contact.
Without any news from her father, Green Qi's worry and anxiety multiplied exponentially. Tears began to fall uncontrollably. Memories of everything about her father flashed through her mind like a film rewinding, and a thought sprouted in her heart, pushing its way out.
On the way to the airport, the exotic street scenes outside whirled past under the turning wheels. The people and events of the past kept appearing before her as they receded into the distance. Green Qi lowered her head, her soft chestnut brown hair obediently hanging down on either side, long eyelashes shielding all emotions hidden in her eyes.
Upon reaching the airport ticket counter, she learned that the last flight to City A had already taken off. Green Qi had no choice but to wait for the next flight. In the waiting area, she finally got through to Secretary Xu's phone and confirmed her father's condition.
At that moment when the call ended, Green Qi's heart sank to rock bottom. She couldn't imagine what she would become if she lost her father.
For a long time after boarding, Green Qi couldn't regain her composure; she just stared at the photo of herself with her father on her phone screen, gazing blankly at it. The two people in the photo smiled so brightly, but just thinking about the possibility of losing her father made her realize that even this simple happiness could be taken away.
As this thought crossed her mind, sadness spread rapidly within her like fermentation, making even breathing start to hurt.
After more than ten hours of long-distance flight, Green Qi's energy was nearly depleted. Having not eaten, she felt weak even while walking. After retrieving her luggage, she could barely hold herself together. As she reached the door, her legs buckled, and the anticipated pain hit her; she collapsed onto the ground.
Watching the bustling crowd, Green Qi felt as if she were missing out on the passersby in her life, becoming just another face among them, hurriedly brushing past each other.
After regaining some strength, Green Qi took out her sunglasses from her bag. Her eyes, already tired from lack of rest and swollen from crying, looked red.
She picked up her luggage and exited the airport. The evening breeze felt slightly cool against her skin. By the time she got into a taxi, it was completely dark outside. Green Qi decided to go home first and provided the address; the taxi quickly merged into the flow of traffic.
As the city lights began to twinkle, the night view was so familiar. It was rush hour, and by the time she arrived at her father's villa, it was quite late. She took out her keys and opened the door; the sensor light in the entrance turned on instantly. Looking at the dimly lit living room, Green Qi suddenly felt afraid to step inside.
She switched on the crystal chandelier on the wall, and the entire house lit up as bright as day. Green Qi glanced around; everything in the house was just as it had been before she left for abroad. However, no matter how late it was before, her father would always leave a light on for her downstairs because he knew she was afraid of the dark. Lying on the specially customized lazy sofa in the living room, Green Qi curled up like an injured cub as exhaustion slowly overtook her—
