"Don't worry, we will investigate the cause of the accident thoroughly. All construction is suspended until we have clarity," Nie Fengling said, patting her shoulder to reassure her. The two walked side by side out of the Construction Site.
Sitting in the back seat, Green Qi couldn't shake off the scenes she had just witnessed: the crumbling high-rise, the debris scattered everywhere, and the pools of blood on the ground.
Her phone was ringing incessantly in her bag. Green Qi ignored it; the caller seemed patient, dialing repeatedly. When her phone rang for the third time, she finally picked it up and answered.
"Where are you?" The familiar voice on the other end was tinged with urgency.
"Outside," Green Qi replied softly.
"Don't think about anything. Go home and get some rest. I'll handle everything!" Mu Tongzi said hurriedly.
Green Qi remained silent, staring blankly ahead. The city lights flickered, but the sweltering heat did nothing to warm her heart at that moment. She had never imagined that a house she designed could lead to someone's death!
Noticing her silence, Mu Tongzi continued, "Tell me your address; I'll send someone to pick you up!"
"No need. Vice President Nie called a car for me. Don't worry, I'm fine," Green Qi quickly replied, not wanting him to worry.
"Alright then, call me when you get home. I believe it's not an issue with the design."
"Yes, thank you for believing in me. You take care of your things; I'm hanging up now!"
After ending the call and putting her phone away, Green Qi wasn't trying to evade responsibility; she just wanted a moment of peace.
When IKEA finished preparing dinner and went to call her to eat, she found that Green Qi had already fallen asleep. She walked over to tuck her in and gently closed the door as she left.
The next day, Green Qi woke up early. As she was going downstairs, IKEA happened to come out of the kitchen with breakfast. Seeing her, IKEA smiled and said, "Gu Da, you're up! Come quickly and have breakfast; you didn't eat last night!"
Green Qi sat down and could only manage a small bowl of porridge before feeling full. IKEA looked at her with concern and said, "Gu Da, please eat a bit more!"
Green Qi glanced at the time and shook her head. "No, I'm full. You eat! Let's finish quickly so we can get to the office early." With that, she stood up and returned to her room.
IKEA put down her bowl and chopsticks, watching Green Qi's retreating figure, hesitating to speak. She wanted to mention that Jiang Chengmu had called many times but feared it would upset Gu Da. After thinking it over, she decided to swallow her words.
As soon as IKEA and Green Qi arrived at the office, Green Qi sensed that something was off. She asked the intern at the front desk and learned that the family of the deceased from yesterday had come to the company causing a scene. The security had to intervene, warning them not to escalate things to the media. Fortunately, the Public Relations Department managed to calm things down. A few burly men were adamant about not leaving and were now waiting in the conference room, demanding an explanation from the company.
Green Qi's heart sank as she hurried into the elevator. Upon entering the conference room, a man stood up and pointed at her, shouting, "It's you! The foreman said you're the designer of that building; it's because of you that someone was killed!" He charged towards Green Qi, followed by several angry men rushing at her. Male colleagues present quickly stepped forward to block them.
"Hey guys, let's talk this out calmly. The investigation isn't complete yet; we don't even know where the responsibility lies. It doesn't necessarily mean Director Gu's design is at fault," one male colleague explained to the group of men.
"Even if it's not her fault, it's still your company's responsibility. Our brother is dead now; he has a family to support. No matter what happens today, you must give us an explanation; otherwise, we will definitely take this to the media!" the leading man declared fiercely.
