"Brother, how did you end up there?"
Wu Xin's surprised voice came from the computer. The fact that her brother suddenly video-called her was already shocking enough, but to her astonishment, not only was her brother on the screen, but also her good friend.
Wasn't this their apartment in Shencheng?
Wu Xin stared at the unexpected duo before her. Her brother, Wu Rong, sat on the sofa with a stern expression, exuding an intimidating aura. Even from the other side of the computer, Wu Xin could feel a chill emanating from him.
Her friend, Rao Jie, stood awkwardly behind the sofa, trying to keep her distance from Wu Rong. If it weren't for the video call, she would have likely put as much space between them as possible.
This bizarre combination left Wu Xin bewildered.
Rao Jie was even more flustered; she had been scared out of her wits just moments ago. Initially, she could have stood her ground confidently, but for some reason, facing Wu Rong made her lose that confidence.
Seeing the cold man about to call the police, Rao Jie could only desperately shout out Wu Xin's name for courage. There was no way she could have mistaken the apartment; if it had been sublet, how could Wu Xin's personal belongings and access code still be there? Thus, Rao Jie called out Wu Xin's name to bolster herself, and it turned out to be the right choice.
The man stopped his call to the police and scrutinized her for a moment before reluctantly calming down enough to communicate.
After a nervous exchange, they finally understood what was happening. Rao Jie knew that Wu Xin had an older brother, but she had heard he went abroad for high school. By the time Rao Jie met Wu Xin, Wu Rong was no longer in Shencheng and thus remained unknown to her.
Wu Rong was still suspicious, which led to this video call situation.
Rao Jie was dressed normally now, but recalling how Wu Rong had coldly told her to go change earlier made her feel embarrassed enough to want to flee immediately. However… it was late at night, and she truly had nowhere else to go.
In a moment of distraction, the siblings—who shared similar personalities—began arguing about whether or not to let Rao Jie stay.
"Let her find somewhere else to stay! You created this mess; you deal with it."
"Do you have any humanity? It's late at night! Where do you expect her to go? If she had somewhere else to go, why would she come here in the middle of the night?"
"This has nothing to do with me; I dislike unfamiliar people entering my living space."
"Come on! How could you live in a dorm back then?"
"That was a boys' dorm!"
"Does that make a difference to you? Besides, she's not sleeping in your room; she's sleeping in mine! It's my room; I have the right to decide who stays here! Brother, it's so late; if you send Rao Jie out alone and something happens to her, won't your conscience hurt?"
Wu Rong frowned slightly, seemingly hesitating.
Rao Jie awkwardly spoke up, "Well, I..."
Before she could finish her sentence, Wu Xin in the video quickly gestured for her to be quiet.
After a moment, Wu Rong said, "Just for one night."
"Brother, whether it's one night or two nights, it's still the same. If you're going to help someone, help them all the way. Rao Jie is really in trouble; just let her stay until she no longer needs it. I guarantee you Rao Jie's character. She's a good and sensible girl who absolutely won't interfere with your work or rest. It might even bring you some benefits!"
Wu Rong replied coldly and without hesitation, "No way!"
