John Whitaker stared at the old communicator in his hand, took a deep breath, and tried to release the pressure that had built up from waiting for so long. Every time the communicator buzzed, indicating a possible new message, his heart felt like a taut string, stretched so tight that he almost couldn't resist the urge to smash the darn device.
"Maybe this is all a hoax, maybe we're all just wasting time," John hesitated, his eyes gradually becoming hollow. He was on the verge of pressing the power button on the communicator, wanting to end this meaningless wait.
At that moment, the communicator screen suddenly flickered, followed by an unauthenticated voice, young and confident. "John Whitaker! I've heard of your name, the captain of Deathwing Mercenary Corps. Hello there."
John instantly became alert because he had never leaked this information, let alone the fact that this communicator, equipped with the highest-level encryption system, should be impossible to crack. But this person, who called himself "Phantom," not only knew his name but also knew that he was the captain of Deathwing Mercenary Corps.
His hand tightly gripped the communicator, as if ready to crush it at any moment, but he restrained himself and calmly asked, "Who are you exactly? How do you know these things about me?"
The laughter of "Mystery" came through the communicator, filled with complex implications. "I have ways to dig deep into the deep web to find my information. Do you think I wouldn't notice these things?" His voice was full of confidence, as if everything was within his control.
"The tone of 'Mystery Shadow' suddenly changed, with a hint of undeniable threat in the voice: 'Taktron, Tau, your engineering skills are quite good... How did you end up joining a mercenary group?"
John's face darkened, he widened his eyes and said angrily, "What are you doing now? Don't threaten my team members."
"The Shadow" chuckled, "Don't forget that you're the one asking for a favor, so maybe don't be so aggressive in your attitude."
He paused for a moment, his tone becoming more gentle, "I will investigate the mercenary group that interests you, just like you investigated me as the middleman. And besides, we are separated by a hundred thousand miles, so we won't even meet, so rest assured."
John bit his lower lip, his sense of vigilance evident. This person named "Mystery Shadow" seemed to be more than just a simple middleman, with information and abilities far exceeding John's expectations. So, what exactly did he want to achieve?
John's thoughts raced, but he knew these were all unknowns. The most important thing now was to uncover the true intentions of this mysterious figure and just how strong his hand really was.
John clenched his fist and returned to the communicator. "Well, Enigma, you've won this round. So what's next? How do you plan to play this dangerous game?"
Enigma smiled, his tone filled with casual pride. "Oh, you'll find out, John. You'll find out."
He paused for a moment, then continued as if giving an academic report: "In the cosmological domain where you are, not far from you, there is a planet called Yakhanix. It's a cultural melting pot, with multiple races and faiths intertwined. Compared to other more turbulent domains, the situation on Yakhanix is relatively stable."
John's impatience became more apparent on his face, and he asked coldly, "And then? Are we going to destroy such peace? Assassinate a president or leader, incite a planetary rebellion?"
The mysterious smile became even more exaggerated, as if just grasping the world's secret: "Oh, no, no, no. This mission is far more magnificent than you can imagine, John. We are not only going to save this planet, but all life in the entire universe."
John couldn't help but clench his fist in anger, "Stop beating around the bush. Get to the point."
The shadow of mystery smiled again, but this time with a hint of regret and pity, as if he saw through John's idealistic young soldier self from many years ago, "Just like your dream when you joined the army, John."
A glimmer flashed in John's eyes, but quickly disappeared, replaced by deeper anger and distrust. Every word from the shadow felt like a knife, tearing apart his memories of his past ideals. He was tired of it all.
"If you don't intend to get to the point, then I don't have time to chat with you." John said urgently.
The mysterious figure suddenly fell silent, seemingly evaluating whether this former imperial soldier still had the potential to save this domain.
"Very well, John. You will get all the answers you seek. But remember, this is not a game; it's about the life and death of countless people," the mysterious figure said solemnly at the end.
John felt even more determined about his suspicions, but he also knew that even if he was full of distrust and disgust for all this, he might still not be able to escape the impending war and disaster. And in all of this, the mysterious figure always seemed to be standing at an untouchable height, overlooking him and everything in this realm.
The mysterious smile disappeared, and his expression turned cold. "John, don't relax just because of the apparent peace on Yakannix Planet. Beneath this seemingly tranquil land, unimaginable evil is deeply hidden."
John felt a chill in his heart, sensing that the situation might be far more serious than he had imagined.
The mysterious figure continued: "Even on a planet like Yakhanix, the forces of chaos are stirring. Many inhabitants of other planets have already been corrupted by chaos, forming the Chaos Cult and fanatically worshipping the chaos demons."
John felt a pang of concern. This was no small matter; if the forces of chaos were allowed to spread unchecked, the consequences would be unimaginable.
"Our intelligence indicates that these cultists have conducted multiple summoning rituals. What's even more concerning is that they seem to have successfully summoned creatures from another world."
"This is not just a potential threat, but an imminent crisis," the enigmatic figure's tone was sharp as a blade, as if it could pierce through everything. "So, the mission of the Deathwing Mercenary Corps is to head to Yakhanix, infiltrate the headquarters of these Chaos Cults, and uncover what they have summoned and their future intentions."
John nodded in silence, finally understanding that in the eyes of the enigma, he was just a pawn on the chessboard. But he also knew that this war might be far more challenging and dangerous than any mission he had experienced before.
