Bai Yujing originally planned to take the tram to her destination, but looking at the double-decker bus parked nearby, she felt that riding it would allow her to better experience the local culture of Edinburgh. If she took the tram, she might miss this opportunity.
Bai Yujing decided to take the Airport Bus instead, spending 3.2 pounds to purchase a Day Ticket. The driver informed her that with this ticket, she could ride the bus as many times as she wanted throughout the day, which made it quite economical. With this Day Ticket in hand, she could get off wherever she liked, enjoy the sights, and then catch the next bus when she was ready.
However, Bai Yujing decided to first find her hotel and settle down; with so much luggage, it would be hard to enjoy herself fully.
As the bus started moving, Bai Yujing noticed two Scottish women sitting in front of her. They wore exotic oval-shaped hats tightly fitted around their heads, topped with a small ball. Both girls were beautiful and chatted and laughed together, which made Bai Yujing feel more relaxed.
Throughout the journey, Bai Yujing observed the scenery of Edinburgh. The first thing that caught her eye was the tall, ancient stone buildings that exuded a sense of historical depth.
The streets were bustling with various vehicles and throngs of people. In the distance, she could see towering spire-like structures. Each ancient building revealed connections between bricks, resembling a castle built from countless stones.
The old architecture, beautiful scenery, and blue sky captivated Bai Yujing. She even spotted a burly man wearing a white checkered shirt and a skirt. The man was bald with a bushy beard and wore white knee-high socks and leather shoes beneath his red skirt. This outfit would look appealing on a woman, but on such a burly man, Bai Yujing couldn't help but exclaim.
"Ah! My eyes!"
Bai Yujing recognized this as the Scottish Kilt, an ancient garment from Scotland that originated from Celtic culture. It is a short skirt made of tartan fabric that extends from the waist to the knees.
This attire is part of Scotland's national costume, which includes other components: a knee-length tartan skirt, a matching vest, and a tweed jacket, along with knee-high knitted socks. The skirt is secured with a wide leather belt, from which hangs a large pouch at the front center of the kilt. Sometimes a tartan blanket is draped over one shoulder and pinned at the left shoulder.
Bai Yujing also heard that wearing a Scottish Kilt means not wearing underwear. It is said that Queen Elizabeth II attended the traditional Braemar Gathering with her 91-year-old husband Prince Philip while wearing this traditional Scottish outfit, going commando underneath, which made headlines. Thinking about this burly man in front of her made her shiver.
The bus soon moved on, and Bai Yujing enjoyed the sights along the way. Eventually, it came to a stop on Princes Street where people boarded and alighted. Bai Yujing got off with her luggage and looked around; in the distance, she could see a Ferris wheel. This area was near Princes Street Gardens and marked the boundary between Edinburgh's Old Town and New Town. Within Princes Street Gardens stood the Scott Monument, dedicated to Scotland's famous writer Sir Walter Scott, making it one of Edinburgh's notable attractions.
Bai Yujing walked around with her phone until she finally found her hotel location. It was only a few hundred meters from Edinburgh Castle; she could see it looming nearby.
At this point, Edinburgh was already filled with festive atmosphere; August was its busiest season with various arts festivals taking place.
Early August was also when Edinburgh hosted the Military Tattoo. During the day, the castle was open to visitors; in the evening, performances for the Edinburgh Military Tattoo were held at its entrance. From afar, she could see many people gathering there along with performance artists dressed in various costumes carrying instruments.
Bai Yujing had to join the ticket-grabbing action once again. During the time before his departure, he spent quite a bit of time refreshing the page and finally managed to grab a ticket for the Military Tattoo, albeit only a high-priced ticket that included dinner. It was evident that during this season in Edinburgh, hotels and tickets were in high demand; if one did not purchase them in advance, they would only regret it later.
Carrying a large bag, Bai Yujing walked into the hotel and checked in at the front desk. The staff informed him that he could store his luggage for free. After receiving his room key, Bai Yujing immediately went upstairs to find his room.
The room was quite nice—spacious, clean, and beautiful. The wooden floor and bright windows added to its charm. Beneath the window was a brown sofa, and at the other end of the bed was an embedded wardrobe with sliding doors adorned with typical Western religious paintings.
What satisfied Bai Yujing the most was the bathroom. It had a glass door that opened to reveal a bright white space, fully equipped with amenities. Inside was a large square bathtub, and next to it was a hairdryer. Bai Yujing washed his face and tidied up before stepping out.
The room also came with a coffee pot, teapot, iron, and a safe. When he opened the window, Bai Yujing could see Edinburgh Castle. It seemed that his room had a great location, making it worth the price he paid.
At that moment, a sound echoed in Bai Yujing's mind; the long-quiet Exotic Creature Hunter System had finally stirred again.
"Detected that the player has arrived at the destination. Please begin exploring all of Edinburgh. The system will automatically scan for all clues related to Exotic Creatures in your vicinity and provide them to you."
Bai Yujing immediately saw the original map panel zoom in again from Europe, with the previously locked circle around Edinburgh expanding to display all of Edinburgh. A white dot appeared, representing Bai Yujing's current location, while circles of radar began to spin around him, automatically searching for and collecting information about his surroundings. He noted that this range was approximately several dozen meters.
In this case, if he wanted to gather clues, Bai Yujing would indeed have to run around Edinburgh in circles. Would such aimless wandering really yield results?
What made Bai Yujing even more skeptical was whether the Leprechaun mentioned by the Exotic Creature Hunter System truly existed. However, after some thought, he decided to treat it as a vacation—wandering around based on his mood might just lead him to some clues.
After putting down his things, Bai Yujing remained full of energy and decided to go out for a stroll. His first target was Edinburgh Castle, followed by a visit to Princes Street Gardens later in the afternoon.
Just as he was about to head out, an unexpected call came through—it was his ex-girlfriend, Li Xinyan.
"Hello? What made you suddenly think of calling me?" Bai Yujing asked as soon as he picked up.
Li Xinyan snorted coldly. "What’s this? I heard you quit your job? And you ran off abroad?"
"Who did you hear that from? It must be Wang Yi, right? That's right, I suddenly thought of taking a walk and looking around. I'm currently in Edinburgh, just got off the plane and am now at the hotel." Bai Yujing felt there was nothing to hide anymore; they had broken up, so what was there to let go of?
Li Xinyan on the other end started lecturing Bai Yujing again: "You just suddenly quit your job and ran abroad without caring about anything. Why do you always do these irresponsible things?"
Bai Yujing immediately felt a bit uncomfortable: "We’ve broken up, right? This has nothing to do with you anymore. Besides, I don’t feel like I’m being irresponsible at all. I’m just by myself now; I only need to be responsible for myself. If I'm in a bad mood, what's wrong with going out for a walk?"
"And that job of mine, wasn’t it always something you looked down on? You kept telling me to quit and find another job. Now that I’ve quit, you say it’s not good!"
Li Xinyan seemed a bit unstable emotionally, but she always had this tough attitude. Bai Yujing didn’t pick up on anything unusual: "Are you coming back later?"
Bai Yujing was taken aback. What else could she do if she didn’t go back? She only had a tourist visa; could she stay here permanently? "I’m just out to change my mood. You don’t need to worry about me. I’ll be back in a while. Isn’t there an important experiment going on in your lab right now? Why do you still have time to worry about me?"
"I don’t care if you die out there; just be careful and come back early!"
"Dudu!"
Li Xinyan hung up the phone, leaving Bai Yujing somewhat confused. The thoughts of ordinary women were often very complicated, and someone with Bai Yujing's intelligence felt completely overwhelmed and unable to understand, especially when it came to someone like Li Xinyan.
She pulled out a shoulder bag from her suitcase, packed a power bank, wallet, and some essentials, and slung her camera across her chest for easy access. Oh right, she also had the bus Day Ticket she bought earlier, which could be reused within a day—she couldn’t waste it.
After checking that she hadn’t forgotten anything, Bai Yujing dashed out of the hotel towards the massive castle on the hilltop: "Edinburgh, here I come!"
