The night breeze was cool, brushing against my hair. I looked up, closed my eyes, and suddenly opened them wide as a shadow flashed past me, moving so quickly that I could barely catch it.
This shadow came from the direction of my senior brother's residence. My heart tightened, and I instinctively chased after it.
The shadow darted through a secluded alley, and I carefully followed, each step taken with extreme caution.
Finally, the shadow stopped in front of an abandoned manor, overgrown with weeds and appearing particularly eerie. The shadow slipped into the manor, glanced around, and then entered a dilapidated small house.
I held my breath and slowly approached, peering through the window to look inside.
I saw not only the earlier shadow but also four or five figures in black clothing gathered together, talking for a while before carving something into the wall. After finishing their markings, they scattered in different directions toward the city.
Once I confirmed they had all left, I quietly entered the room. From a distance, their conversation had been unclear; I could only vaguely hear that they seemed to be searching for something.
The figures in black came from the direction of my senior brother, which likely meant his whereabouts had been exposed.
I scanned the surroundings of the room and noticed some strange scratches on the wall—those were made by the figures in black. They appeared to be some sort of code.
"This is..."
A sense of familiarity stirred within me at the sight of these symbols, though I couldn't recall why at that moment. I carefully memorized these codes, planning to study them thoroughly later.
Just then, I felt a chill creeping up behind me. Instinctively, I dodged to the side as a cold light grazed past my ear.
Turning around, I saw a figure in black closing in on me. His gaze was cold and ruthless, looking at me as if I were nothing more than an object.
Interesting. I've always looked at others this way; it was unsettling to be regarded like this for the first time.
I let out a cold smile, my figure moving like a ghost as I swiftly approached the figure in black and grabbed his neck. "Ant, you overestimate yourself."
The man in black looked at me in terror as I loosened my grip and said slowly, "Do you want to live?"
His face turned red as he nodded with all his might.
"How many of you are there in the city?"
"Twenty."
"I don't care how you do it, gather them all here and kill them one by one."
I took a pill from my pocket, pried open the man's mouth, and tossed it in. Coldly, I said, "If you dare to play tricks, you'll be the first to die."
"What... what did you make me eat?!"
"Poison," I replied, tossing the man aside and finding a clean spot to sit down. I yawned and casually said, "Let's get started."
In truth, the man in black was quite skilled; if we were to truly fight, it would take me fifty moves to subdue him. He simply overestimated himself and underestimated me, which led him to fall into my trap so easily.
"Y-yes..."
The man in black collapsed onto the ground, gasping for air. His face was ashen as he pulled out a signal flare from his pocket. He glanced at me and, steeling himself, fired it off.
In less than fifteen minutes, one of his companions arrived first but was swiftly killed by another hidden behind the door.
Indeed, no one knows their own kind's weaknesses better than themselves, especially in an ambush situation. The man in black didn't miss a single shot and quickly eliminated more than a dozen of his comrades.
"How many left?"
"Eighteen..."
The man in black was now bloodthirsty, glaring at me with hatred but dared not make a move against me.
"Leave the last two alive."
I scoffed; with such little backbone, they would never achieve anything great.
The man in black acted swiftly, and soon the remaining two were subdued. They stared in disbelief, ready to curse, but were silenced with a pressure point, left only able to glare angrily at the man in black.
"Feed them," I said, pulling out two pills and handing them to the man in black. Then I turned towards the door and coldly remarked, "Have you had enough of the show?"
While tracking that shadow, I had left messages for Liu Zhuang along the way, instructing him to bring people for backup. He had been here for quite some time now.
"I didn't want to disturb your work," Liu Zhuang said with a grin as he walked in, leaving Fireflies and the others outside.
"Take them back and lock them up separately."
I wasn't in the mood for jokes. I had a feeling my senior brother was hiding something from me, and perhaps I could find clues from these people.
"You said you wouldn't kill me?" the man in black said in terror.
"Are you dead?" I shot him a glance before stepping outside.
Before I knew it, I was back at my senior brother's residence. Looking up at his window, I felt an inexplicable unease in my heart, as if the person inside might disappear at any moment.
It was no wonder I felt this way; after all, my senior brother had vanished without a trace for ten years. Anyone would feel anxious about that.
Moreover, we had just had a big fight not long ago. If my senior brother was upset and decided to run away again, it wouldn't be impossible. I didn't want to hurt him, but so many mysteries were tied to him, and if I wanted to uncover them, it would inevitably cause him pain.
I climbed onto a large tree in front of the window and lay on a branch directly facing it, staring intently at the window while my thoughts drifted elsewhere. I didn't know what I wanted, so I decided to empty my mind and think of nothing.
Suddenly, with a creak, the window opened. My senior brother stood there looking at me helplessly. After a moment's pause, he sighed and said, "Come in; it's damp outside and bad for your health."
I must be quite mischievous; I had anticipated that my senior brother wouldn't want me to spend the night outside, which is why I lay on the tree so casually, waiting for him to invite me in.
"Go to bed and sleep."
I nodded, climbed onto the bed, yawned, and indeed felt a bit sleepy. I closed my eyes and waited for a while, but there was no movement from my senior brother.
I opened my eyes in confusion and saw my senior brother sitting cross-legged on the soft couch not far from the bed, meditating. The wind blowing in from the window slightly lifted the corners of his clothes.
Seeing this, I felt a bit restless. "Come over and sleep."
My senior brother looked at me gently and patiently explained, "You are a woman; I cannot ruin your reputation."
"I don't care."
I frowned. We had slept together when we were younger. Besides, I didn't mind my gender; sometimes I even forgot that I was a woman, just as I didn't care whether my senior brother was male or female—he was simply my senior brother.
"I care," he sighed, and a hint of loneliness flashed across his face. "Sleep; I will stay here with you."
I looked at my senior brother's thin body and skin that was pale to the point of being almost transparent, feeling quite disapproving. However, I had always been helpless against him; my domineering nature and insistence had no effect on him. I could only turn away in anger, choosing not to see.
Perhaps because my senior brother was nearby, I quickly fell asleep despite my anger.
A night without dreams.
