Wei Qian accompanied Rao Jie back to her home, but the house was empty. After taking her belongings, Rao Jie hesitated for a moment before ultimately deciding to leave the keys behind. This time, she had made up her mind to leave home for good, wanting to show her parents her determination and to stop pressuring her.
However, so far, her family had not reached out to her at all. The thought made Rao Jie feel desolate; she always felt out of place in this family, and the affection she longed for seemed forever out of reach.
When they reached the entrance of the community, Wei Qian parted ways with Rao Jie. She had no classes that afternoon and was heading to work. Before leaving, she expressed concern for Rao Jie, telling her that if she couldn't find a place to stay, she could come over to her place—there was nothing to worry about.
Rao Jie smiled and agreed, but she knew it wouldn't be convenient for Wei Qian either. Wei Qian's parents had passed away unexpectedly a few years ago, and all their money had gone towards compensation. She worked while finishing college and also supported her younger sister's living expenses and education. Rao Jie remembered how Wei Qian had once juggled four jobs in a single day, sleeping only three hours; it was incredibly tough.
This year was crucial for Wei Qian's sister, who was in Ninth Grade. The two of them lived in a very small apartment, managing to get by together. However, if Rao Jie moved in, it would become cramped; staying for just a day or two might be manageable, but anything longer would be impossible.
Rao Jie needed a place to stay that wasn't just temporary. Finding something suitable now would be ideal. But when she considered that all her possessions amounted to only five thousand yuan—that was her food budget for the semester and the tuition for a math prep course she had planned to take for graduate school—she felt stuck.
Should she give up on graduate school and start working like Wei Qian to find an internship? While it was an option, changing her long-planned future felt daunting. She found herself feeling lost.
After pondering for a while, Rao Jie decided to look for accommodation near the school. It didn't have to be nice; even sharing a place would be fine as long as it was cheap. Perhaps if she saved enough, she could make it work.
As soon as her afternoon class ended, Rao Jie began searching the school’s bulletin boards where students often posted rental information—some from outsiders and others from fellow students. She calculated how much rent she could afford without enrolling in the prep course and by cutting down on food expenses. Then she noted down all the listings that met her criteria.
Instead of contacting each listing immediately, she visited every bulletin board on campus, jotting down all the information before starting with the cheapest options first.
At that moment, Wu Rong had just arrived at school for the last class of the afternoon. Entering through the north gate, he passed by a bulletin board and noticed Rao Jie bent over it, diligently copying something with an intense focus. As she read aloud while writing, she completely disregarded her surroundings and accidentally stepped on the edge of a flower bed while moving. Losing her balance, she bumped into the bulletin board.
Fortunately, she wasn't hurt—just a little sore. Rubbing her forehead silently, she continued concentrating on copying those haphazardly posted notes.
Wu Rong frowned in disdain, thinking to herself, how could she be so foolish? However, looking at her expression, it seemed she no longer had the unfortunate look from earlier that afternoon.
