Wu Rong did not stop; he merely slowed his originally quick pace slightly upon seeing Rao Jie, but he continued to walk straight past her.
When Wu Rong reached the vicinity of the teaching building, following the well-remembered main road, he spotted a bulletin board. Curiosity piqued, he approached to see what made the domestic university's bulletin board so different and intriguing compared to that of a foreign country.
Upon closer inspection, he found a jumble of various notices, but the majority were... rental and roommate advertisements. Wu Rong began to understand Rao Jie’s actions and felt a slight sense of satisfaction. It seemed that the girl was genuinely looking for a place to live rather than just putting on a show.
“Brother Rong, what are you doing? Class is about to start, and you’re just standing here looking at... rental information?”
...
Finally, after jotting down all the information, Rao Jie rubbed her swollen forehead as she made her way to the school cafeteria, analyzing and summarizing each piece of information she had recorded. In truth, there were very few listings that met her low rental criteria. In the end, she narrowed it down to five options.
Rao Jie began calling each one. Two of them had already been rented out, one was a disconnected number, leaving her with only two potential places to check out. One call was answered by an elderly man who mentioned that the apartment was cheap due to its old condition—a one-bedroom with a living room. The other call was answered by a young man who explained he was helping his girlfriend find a roommate. One was for solo renting while the other was for shared accommodation; the prices were quite similar.
Rao Jie decided to visit the elderly man's place first. Although it was near the school, she became disoriented trying to follow the detailed address provided by him and eventually found herself at the location. If she hadn’t seen it with her own eyes, she wouldn’t have believed there was such an old house near her school. The small building stood in a narrow alleyway, appearing as if it might collapse at any moment. Some of the power lines drooped down to the ground, and every streetlight along the way was broken; there were hardly any people around, creating an eerily quiet atmosphere.
At that moment, the elderly man appeared and beckoned Rao Jie to follow him into the dim alleyway where the entrance was located.
Feeling a bit scared, Rao Jie asked, “Grandpa, how many families live in this building?”
The old man replied honestly, “Oh, just you. The other families have all moved out; this building is about to be torn down, but you can stay for a few months.”
Rao Jie looked at the staircase piled high with clutter; the hallway extending beyond it was pitch black without even a motion-sensor light.
Rao Jie was timid and really didn't dare to take another step forward. She apologized to the old man and quickly ran away.
Having no experience in renting houses, her first attempt turned into a terrifying experience because she had not asked enough questions beforehand. Since she was afraid of ghosts since childhood, how could she dare to live in a place that looked like a Ghost Building? There was no need to save money; she could scare herself to death.
The second time, Rao Jie learned her lesson and asked for more details. Only after confirming that it was a modern apartment did she dare to go. However, the urgency and enthusiasm in the man's voice during their phone conversation made Rao Jie feel a bit strange, but she didn't think too much about it and went alone.
The community turned out to be quite normal. Although it was three bus stops away from the school, it was still acceptable. For a shared rental in such a community, the price was already very cheap, and Rao Jie was quite satisfied even before viewing the apartment.
The man was waiting for her outside the community from the beginning. She recognized him immediately based on his clothing description. He was very enthusiastic and even showed Rao Jie around the community.
