04 The Benevolent Healer in the Flames of War
During my years in the borderlands, my reputation gradually spread, and with it came figures like Li Mubai. He was young yet possessed an undeniable aura, as if he were a born leader, showing disdain for every victory in the borderlands.
Li Mubai was tall and muscular, with a physique that resembled a perfect sculpture. His gaze was sharp as an eagle's, seeming to penetrate the hearts of those he looked at. His face was resolute, marked by a hint of unyielding determination, and his long black hair flowed in the wind, enhancing his heroic demeanor.
One day, he approached me with a hint of provocation. His voice was deep and powerful, each word striking like a hammer on the heart: "Zhang Xiaofan, you who only know how to wield needles, what do you know about fighting? What use is your medical skill here?" I smiled slightly and replied, "General Li, while medicine may not kill, it can save lives. On the battlefield, saving lives is also a great achievement."
He scoffed, seemingly wanting to test me. He swung his sword and cut his own arm, blood gushing out. I was startled but kept my composure, quickly stepping forward to bandage him up and skillfully stitching the wound. I thought to myself: "This Li Mubai is indeed not easy to deal with; this is a perfect opportunity for me to showcase my medical skills."
Seeing that I handled it well, he couldn't help but praise me: "Zhang Xiaofan, I underestimated you; your medical skills are truly impressive." I smiled faintly: "General Li overestimates me; as a healer, one should strive to save regardless of friend or foe."
However, peace in the borderlands did not last long. The enemy suddenly launched a fierce attack, and chaos erupted. Li Mubai immediately led his troops into battle, and I followed to prepare for treating the wounded soldiers. On the battlefield, Li Mubai fought valiantly with his sword, each strike accompanied by the sound of slicing air, but his figure appeared somewhat lonely amidst the smoke.
Just when it seemed dire, I had a sudden idea and said to Li Mubai: "General Li, let me command the medical team to use specially prepared smoke to help everyone retreat." After hesitating for a moment, he finally agreed. I quickly directed the medical team to create smoke using herbs; it spread across the battlefield like a mysterious protective shield, successfully covering everyone's safe withdrawal.
After the war ended, Li Mubai patted my shoulder and exclaimed: "Zhang Xiaofan, not only are your medical skills remarkable, but you are also exceptionally clever. From now on, I Li Mubai am willing to be your brother." I laughed heartily: "General Li, we are already brothers who have fought side by side; no need for further words."
From then on, Li Mubai and I became close comrades, guarding the peace of the borderlands together. Through trials of war and medicine, our bond deepened as we created many thrilling stories together. Every nightfall under the starry sky of the borderlands, we stood side by side with burning beacons behind us and an endless sky before us—our shared homeland that we vowed to protect.
05 The Trap and Farce of the National Master
On the vast lands of the borderlands, my name Zhang Xiaofan and Li Mubai's shone like two brilliant stars illuminating this land filled with war and hope. However, behind this brilliance lay countless crises and challenges.
The national master of the enemy country, a mysterious and unpredictable figure, harbored ambitions as deadly as a snake in the dark. Not only was he skilled in sorcery, but he also had the desire to overthrow the nation's rule. The assassins he dispatched were merely the tip of his vast plan.
Li Mubai and I stood on the high ground of the camp, gazing at the distant beacons of war, filled with worry. Li Mubai gripped the hilt of his sword, its blade glinting coldly in the moonlight. His gaze was resolute and profound, as if he could see through every shadow in the night: “Xiaofan, the enemy is coming fiercely this time; we must be cautious.”
I nodded, already formulating a plan in my mind. I intended to use modern chemical knowledge to create a special smoke that could both conceal us and confuse the enemy. I said to Li Mubai: “Brother Mubai, I have an idea that might turn the situation around.” I explained my plan in detail, and a glimmer of surprise flashed in his eyes: “Xiaofan, this idea is excellent! Let’s do it your way.”
We immediately set to work. I busied myself in the laboratory, mixing various chemical reagents to create a mixture that would produce dense smoke. Meanwhile, Li Mubai led the soldiers to set traps around the camp; every rope and every stone concealed a deadly threat.
As night fell, the enemy's assassins approached silently. Their figures flickered in the darkness like ghosts. However, when they stepped into our traps, everything changed. I ignited the smoke, and instantly, a thick fog enveloped the camp, completely obscuring the enemy's vision; they lost their way in the haze.
Seizing the opportunity, Li Mubai launched an attack. The sword light streaked across the night sky like a meteor; each swing carried determination and power. The sword shadows danced as enemies were caught off guard in the chaos and fell one after another.
After the battle ended, Li Mubai and I stood at the front of the camp, looking at the bodies on the ground, filled with complex emotions. Li Mubai sighed heavily: “Xiaofan, although we won this battle, it truly pains my heart.”
I patted his shoulder and said softly: “Brother Mubai, war is indeed cruel, but as long as we have compassion and empathy, we can find a path to peace.”
Just as we were preparing to clean up the battlefield, the national master of the enemy country suddenly appeared. His figure looked particularly lonely under the moonlight; there was no hint of malice but rather a sense of pleading: “Zhang Xiaofan, I truly admire your medical skills and wisdom. I have come this time to propose a deal.”
I watched him warily and asked: “What deal?” The national master spoke slowly: “I am willing to exchange all my knowledge for your medical treatment. I am gravely ill, and only you can save me.”
After thinking for a moment, I finally agreed but with one condition: “Alright, I will help you. But you must promise not to wage war again.” The national master looked deeply at me and solemnly said: “I promise you.”
Thus, I used my medical skills to save the national master of the enemy country, who kept his promise; finally, both nations ceased hostilities. The names of Li Mubai and me spread throughout the land, becoming heroes in people's hearts.
