She was diligent and hardworking; aside from being quiet and rarely smiling, she was clever, willing to help others, and had no desire for conflict. She even took on extra tasks for others without expecting any compensation. This earned her the boss's appreciation, and gradually, everyone went from ignoring her to liking her and looking out for her.
Fu Tianming received a call from his assistant in a state of anxiety and was forced to return to the company. Just as he left, Liu Qianqian arrived at the small pavilion. However, she now had a new aspiration in her heart.
One day at a restaurant, she accidentally came across a magazine left behind by a guest, where she saw the businessman with a doctorate—Fu Tianming. She was startled; she never expected that someone she knew would be such a sought-after golden bachelor. Besides being shocked, she felt a chill in her heart. A sixteen-year-old girl in the throes of first love had developed feelings for a successful man twice her age. She knew she would never be worthy of him. After several days without seeing him, she felt very upset. She felt too insignificant and small. He was merely pitying her, yet she found herself lost in fantasies.
However, determined as she was, she resolved to go back to school. Initially, aside from wanting to find her father, she had no plans for the future, but now she wanted to bridge the gap between them. She didn't want his pity; even more so, she didn't want him to look down on her.
But how could she go to school here? Where could she go? She had no idea and didn’t know whom to consult, yet she bought high school textbooks to study on her own. She had always been good at studying; it had only been a few months since she put down her books. However, without guidance, learning became quite difficult for her. Every day after work, she would take her books and sit in the pavilion, reading under the streetlight while waiting.
After finally securing new clients and orders, Fu Tianming became busy for another month without searching for Liu Qianqian.
One afternoon, Li Yu experienced another heartbreak. He was Fu Tianming's close friend from university with outstanding management skills. After starting his company, Fu Tianming recruited him from a foreign company to be the general manager. However, this guy, though average-looking, was quite the womanizer. In his thirties now, he refused to marry and changed girlfriends as easily as changing clothes. But recently it seemed he had developed real feelings. Fu Tianming had always disapproved of his views on relationships but couldn’t help but comfort him when he saw him upset. After just a few words of consolation, he found himself dragged along to change scenery and mood. Li Yu insisted that there was a small restaurant with unique dishes that they must visit to drown their sorrows in drink. Originally planning to use this half-day off to search for someone, Fu Tianming reluctantly joined him instead.
Since there was still some time before dinner service began, the place wasn’t crowded yet. Soon enough, the food arrived at their table; it truly had a unique flavor. Whether it was due to the restaurant’s dishes or its homely decor, they couldn’t help but reminisce about their college days until they realized the place was now filled with diners. The small restaurant was doing great business; soon the waitstaff had to run around.
“Sir, please enjoy your meal!” The voice sounded so familiar that Fu Tianming turned his head in surprise as joy surged within him. It was Liu Qianqian, the girl he had been worried about for over a month, who was currently serving food at the neighboring table.
“Qianqian!” He didn’t know why he called her that or why it slipped out so easily. Liu Qianqian froze for a moment before turning around to see this person she missed day and night.
“Hello, Uncle!” Despite feeling overwhelming joy inside, she managed to express herself calmly—a result of years of hardship.
“Who is this?” asked Zhang Yu, who was already tipsy.
“A relative,” Fu Tianming said as he tried to mask his excitement and happiness with an even tone.
“I’ve never heard you mention her! Tsk tsk, working at such a young age?”
“Weihao, you’re out of line! Can’t you spare some money to help her out?” Being long-time brothers and fueled by alcohol emboldened him enough to finish his sentence despite Fu Tianming’s darkening expression.
Thinking of the frail Liu Qianqian doing such heavy work every day made Fu Tianming feel sad and guilty; his face grew increasingly somber. When Liu Qianqian heard him refer to her as his relative, she felt a moment of warmth but misinterpreted his gloomy expression as disdain for her lowly status. Before Fu Tianming could call out “Qianqian” again, she nodded slightly and quickly turned away to leave.
